Best headphones!

I saw these on sale last year around this time and I did a big mistake thinking they would be on sale a few weeks before Christmas but they weren’t and I ended up buying them but I returned them because of the price which was full price. So when they came around the holidays again this year, I didn’t hesitate when I saw the price drop to the same one as last year. In my opinion, they are the best ones comfort sound and price. I’d rather buy these than the Apple headphones.

Great battery life. Love the technology, imbedded features and auto detection abilities. Also the thinner profile looks great and fits great while wearing. If you ever need to get his attention without him taking the headphones off, he can simply cover the entire right earcup with his hand to activate "Quick Attention Mode," which instantly turns the music down and lets ambient sound in. He can also enable the Speak-to-Chat feature in the Sony Sound Connect app, which will automatically pause his music the moment he starts talking to you. Thanks for choosing Sony.

Don't love the app, some of the things in it are not very intuitive. Touch on the right earphone can be quirky, too. Sometimes it doesn't recognize taps when I am deliberately doing them, sometimes I'm just adjusting the headphones on my head or moving my hand in that area and it registers a tap. I would recommend turning off the audible notifications in the app, when outside they can happen pretty often because of traffic or wind. Very comfortable for long listening sessions. Synced to my S9 easily, but I also have a Samsung 4k TV that it synced to, but has some issues maintaining connectivity, there are occasional dropouts in sound, not sure if that's the TV or the headphones. Over-all, despite the various quirks, quite happy with the sound and quality of these headphones.

We appreciate your feedback regarding the app and some occasional sound skipping when paired with your TV. When connecting the headset to a Bluetooth device, use the headset at least 10 m (30 feet) away from the wireless LAN device. If this headset is used within 10 m (30 feet) of a wireless LAN device, turn off the wireless LAN device. Use this headset and the Bluetooth device as near to each other as possible. The situation may be improved by changing the wireless playback quality settings. Set the headset to “Priority on stable connection” mode or fixing the wireless playback mode with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

They worked great to dampen the super loud plane ride. The batter lasted the whole 6 hour flight and more. I have been using them as my computer headphones as well and I really like the sound quality. The one issue I have with them is I have to keep turning off the Speak Through feature, which is annoying. I use the app to turn it off but maybe once a week it is turned back on and I go to talk to my cat, dog or wife and it pauses my music/movie and it lasts for too long in my opinion. So I turn it off again. I really wish it would stop doing that.

Amazing headphones

As a musician I like to listen to my mixes on many different outputs...studio headphones, phone, bluetooth headphones monitors, car sound system. I wanted an over the rear blue tooth pair I ch could review my music or just enjoy others. I bought another pair right away for my guy! I love the voice recognition pauses so you can talk to someone else leaving them on. I would highly recommend this product. Oh! And it holds its charge beautifully. I charged mine 3 days ago and i use them daily. The only thing i could give a con to at this point is the ease of adjustent of headband sizes without hitting sensitive controls. Not really a con as prob just takes more familiarity. I have s small headHey, it's Sony.

Pricey but good

I got mine on sale for about 270ish and while it was still a little pricey, these are great headphones. Setup was relatively easy and the app offers many features, including a great eq (the headphones are too bassy out of the box), and different levels of ambient sound. The noise cancelation is amazing, and works well for bus rumbles and airplane noises. The battery life is also extremely good, and they dont need to be charged very often. They look very premium as well and dont look or feel cheap. My only gripe really is that the microphone isnt very good for calls. Besides that, I would highly recommend these headphones if you are willing to spend the money or wait for these headphones to go on sale.

We also appreciate your review about the call quality of the headphones. For optimum performance, make sure that the software version of the headphones is updated (via the Sony Headphones Connect app). These steps may also help when using the mic function of the headphones:
-Keep the headset away from a microwave oven, wireless LAN device, etc.
-Bring the headset closer to the Bluetooth device. Remove any obstacles between the headset and the Bluetooth device.
-Keep the headset away from a TV.
-Re-establish the connection between the source device and the headset.
-When using a video calling application on a computer, switch the Bluetooth connection to HFP or HSP with the computer. During a video call, sound quality may become low due to the conditions of the communication line.
-You can also check the settings of the app that you are using for mic sensitivity if available.

The Quality of the sound and bass is great. You can adjust and move quickly from Ambient Sound to Noise Cancelling. Very easy to use touch pad. Battery length is also a plus, you can use them up to ~30 hrs (per spec).

XM4 are still great noise cancelling headphones

My two older children have them. This is the second set I have bought for my daughter. She - literally - wore the first pair to death (24 /7 - 7 days a week.) and they fell apart after 3 years. Unless you're a teenage girl, they will probably last you even longer. These are still probably one of the best pairs of noise cancelling headphones on the market and, these days, you can often get them on sale for much cheaper than Sony's current generation leader WHXM5s. I have enjoyed my own XM4s so much that I have seen no reason to upgrade - and probably won't - until my pair finally kicks the bucket. Unless you need to have the most current shiny - these remain a great choice in HQ NC headphones.

I’m sad Best Buy no longer sells it directly but they are affordable and sound great. Mine broke at the hinge. I now have the xm6s which are amazing but I wish they had bass like the xm4s and maybe the same comfort.

A downgrade, IMO.

I've had the previous XM3 model for over six years and the only reason I had to finally move on from it was due to extreme wear and tear. So I thought I'd upgrade this time. The XM4 is, for me, a downgrade. Everything I cared about is worse. The distance from my computer before the sounds gets choppy and cuts out has lessened. The headset is finicky with which device it wants to connect to. Sometimes I'll have to actually disconnect one device so that another can join instead. But then other times, it's perfectly fine? There was also this awful feature where it would attempt to auto detect my surrounds and turn on and off noise cancelling at will. This is on by default. I will admit that the auto shutdown after a few minutes of detecting it's no longer on my head is nice. Just wish I could adjust how longe before it does that. Wish it were 10 mins. I honestly wish I just tried to get the same model instead of "upgrading".

Regarding the issues you mentioned, here are a few quick things you can try to make the headset behave a bit better:
-In the Sony | Sound Connect app, go to the Sound tab and switch the Bluetooth Connection Quality to "Priority on Stable Connection." This should help with the choppiness and range.
-In the app, you can disable the "Adaptive Sound Control" feature which changes your settings based on your location or movement.
-You can actually adjust or disable the auto-off sensor in the "System" tab of the app to give you more control over when they shut down.

Unexpectedly good

I got them to replace my Beats Solo pros and this pair hasn’t let me down. I miss the almost magical integration of my beats to my iPhone and iPad but these r okay since I can connect them to two devices (AND IT HAS AN AUDIO JACK). It even comes with an adaptor for a those weird airplane audio jacks

Better in every way including BT connectivity

While the sound and noise cancelling were excellent, the BT switching was terrible between devices. NOW, with teh XM4 they seemed to have fixed that to allow switching between TWO devices relatively seamlessly. The sound quality has improved and even the noise cancelling seems to cover higher frequencies than before. The cans fit more comfortably as well. It should be noted that when shipped, the two device feature was not yet included and a firmware update was required. This was not clear until I called Sony support and they walked me though it. Also, I experienced some odd shutoffs during conference calls due, I think, to my AC running at high and possibly confusing the talk feature. I will experiment further next call. The instruction manual and help pages need overhaul. The pictographic explanations are lame.
