    This was purchased as a replacement A/V receiver for my Pioneer Home Theater in a box 5.1 system. I've since paired it with the Sony SA-CS9 active subwoofer which works well. This system is used with a Epson projector for a full movie room effect. Pros: I do believe that there were visual improvements over my 10 year old Pioneer. It is relatively easy to setup. Negatives: There is no connection for a passive subwoofer, so I had to purchase a new active subwoofer to use with this receiver. That was frustrating to discover that there is only RCA style jacks for the sub. I used to be able to allow my PS4 to enter rest mode. Once that happens, the Pioneer subwoofer would completely turn off and eventually my Projector would see that there was no signal and would power itself down as well. With this receiver, it seems that there is always a signal being sent, so my projector will run all day if I do not turn it off myself. This is annoying. I've looked into the standby features, but cannot find out how to make the receiver turn itself off. The only time it works is if I use the sleep function.

      Hi Kyle,

      Thank you for the feedback and we really appreciate the time you took to share so many details about your experience with the STRDH590. The only option you have is you can automatically turn off the receiver and any device connected to the HDMI jack when you turn off the TV. This operation is only available using the display panel on the front of the receiver. Check page 42 from this link for details.

    I've been using this receiver as part of my home theater with several input devices and a 4k projector. My speaker configuration is 5.1 in a small room. I'm happy with the performance. I like the knob that is used to select the input. The display name for the input can be renamed and it makes it easy for the family to use. No need to remember that Video 1 is the AppleTV.

    We upgraded our older Sony receiver when we purchased our new Bravia because the old receiver didn't have the ports we needed. This receiver was reasonably priced (on sale) and tho we had to order it, we are very pleased with the performance. It works perfectly with our older surround sound setup, so that was a big bonus. Highly recommend.

    My old Sony DAV-FR1 surround sound system that I had in my bedroom gave out and as luck would have it this receiver came on sale the next day for $199. I bought this Sony Receiver and a small Fosi 100w mono channel subwoofer amp to re-purpose the passive subwoofer from the Sony DAV-FR1 and my surround sound system in my bedroom is back in business.

    Good product and what I needed to replace an old unit that went out. Whole thing that threw us off during setup was that everything plugs in works directly off the unit, meaning to power cable box, game system, dvd, etc not just sound so it took a bit longer to setup. Also even though the same wattage a previous equipment it does not produce the same strong sound.
