We were daring to run two monitors from a MacBook Pro and could never get it to work. Maybe a driver issue or a bad unit. Possibly user error but bought another product that worked immediately without drivers.

For the JCD381 to work you will need to install the drivers and plug it into a USB-C port that supports display port alternate mode. A Surface is a really great device when it comes to power with portability. However when you need a full-fledged workstation, it just does not have enough USB and video out ports. Working from home on your computer can be much more productive when you have additional monitors so you can see all of your open applications at once. A wired Ethernet connection improves the quality of VOIP calls and video conferencing. And extra USB ports are always useful.
