She needed quite a bit more training

Good low end receiver

I replaced a blown onyko with this unit and the quality doesn’t come close. For example with my old receiver if you’re watching a movie and horses run by you would hear them start in the front speakers and run right by you to the back speakers. With this unit I get everything up front and background music/voices in the back speakers.

I picked this one because I liked Sony and it was similar. Much easer set up and better radio reception. The wife likes so that’s all that mattered.

HD790 needed a new cable for eARC cable to new TV

The sound is great, lots of tuning for all the options. I am using it as 5.1 for now, don't know where to put the +2 side speakers.

PROTECT MODE, shuts off.

Hoping to be able to return it/exchange it. With so many with the same issue, why not just recall this unit? Not the typical Sony standard.

This one fit better than my previous Onkyo and Yamaha units. Only wish it would use banana plug connectors for all speakers.

For the money, a good product to achieve 5.1.2

Set-up wasn’t as intuitive as my Onkyo experience but it was straight forward enough. For the price point, I’m happy with the product as it allows for a 5.1.2Atmos experience.

Even still the board cooked 3 times. The last time a week after the warranty expired. Each time it was sent back it took 6 weeks to get it back. It would work for about 2 months and back it went.

The problem I found was finding a soundbar under $1500 that supported all the audio formats. I purchased this receiver during Audiofest at a great price and with the Sony Core speakers I setup a sweet 5.2.2 bedroom setup that's not too overpowering in my bedroom. The Sony 790 doesn't have all the power or bells and whistles but what I was looking for was Dolby Vision passthrough, multiple HDMI ports, Dolby Atmos and DTS X and it checked off all the boxes.

FUH-GET-ABOUT-IT, This receiver does not have eARC even though it's inferred. First one I bought power transformer failed under warranty. Hope they just give me credit so I can get a Denon. Best Buy Geek Squad was fricken awesome though.... But here. Better than Amazon and they price match.

Regarding passing lossless TrueHD or uncompressed Atmos to the receiver, you may try the following steps: Ensure you are using a Certified Premium High-Speed HDMI cable that supports eARC.
Verify that eARC is enabled on both your TV and your receiver, for your receiver press the AMP MENU button on the remote control, navigate to . Select CTRL.HDMI and set it to CTRL ON then select EARC and set it to AUTO. Also make sure that your TV has the latest firmware installed, as keeping the software updated can resolve many compatibility and performance issues.
