Love the comfort and the sound

Let’s start with setup. These headphones come with and connect wirelessly to a base station which must be plugged into AC power. The headphone’s battery is charged by hanging it over the base station where three pins on the base station connect to three metal tabs on the inside top of the headphone bracket. The instructions say that it can take up to four hours for the headphone to charge the first time out of the box, but mine were fully charged after about an hour. Pairing the headphones to the base station is the next step, and that is supposed to involve pressing the power button on the headphone and waiting for lights on both the base station and headphone to turn solid blue. In reality, all you have to do, when the phones are done charging, is turn them on. I had barely removed my finger from the power button, and the phones had already paired with the base station. I was listening through them in no time. In short, once charged, setup was a snap. As far as comfort and sound, I love them. These are over-the-ear headphones, and they fit very comfortably over my somewhat large (according to my wife) ears on my somewhat large (according to my wife) head. They’ve very light with good adjustment range, and I could wear them all day and barely notice that they’re there. Their over-the-ear-ness means they shut out ambient sound beautifully, and I know this because I had a football game playing rather loudly on the TV in the same room, and I couldn’t hear it at all. The sound quality itself is clear and crisp with good base and volume range. As I write this, I’m listening to Glen Campbell through these connected to my computer’s headphone jack, and Glen never sounded better. Having said all of the above, I do want to emphasize one caveat with these headphones. They are wireless, but they are not portable. When one thinks of wireless portable headphones, one typically thinks of headphones that pair by Bluetooth to your smartphone or other audio source, and that makes them portable as you can be listening to audio from your phone while walking, jogging, riding the bus, or whatever. But these headphones are wireless only in that they connect wirelessly to the base station, while the base station connects by wire to the audio source. So this system IS a way to bring wireless headphone capability to an audio source that doesn’t have Bluetooth and would otherwise have to use wired headphones for private listening. If you want to listen to songs stored on your smartphone, you wouldn’t want this system as you would be better off just getting a pair of Bluetooth headphones and pairing them with your phone. With this system, you can give ANY audio source with audio output, even a 1960s AM transistor radio with a headphone jack (and the proper cables), wireless capability. The two options for audio connection are digital optical or RCA jack (phono or mini-plug). The package comes with the cables necessary to connect the RCA jacks to either phono plugs or to a mini-jack, but you will have to provide the optical digital cable if you want to connect to, say, a television set with optical audio output. You can also, of course, connect to the TV’s RCA audio-out jacks or headphone jacks, if so equipped. As a result, use of these headphones requires staying within range of the base station, and the box says that that range is up to 33 feet. So these are best used by someone who might want to listen to a TV or stereo system without bothering others in the room and still be able to get up and move around or who just doesn’t want the bother and annoyance of wired headphones. I did test their range by leaving my computer desk, which is in one corner of the house, and walk to the farthest point in the house. The audio stayed with me until I was as far as I could be from the base station and still be in the house. It only started to break up at the most distant point, and that’s going though about five walls as well. In short, it is unlikely that range will be an issue for most users. The base station also has RCA audio-out jacks that allow connection to another audio player. So you could, say, connect the output of your TV set to the base station, and then connect the base station’s audio out jacks to the audio input of your home theater system. With this feature, you can listen to the TV through the home theater system, or you can listen to it through these headphones, all without the need to disconnect and reconnect wiring each time. One last comment about connections. You can have audio sources connected to BOTH the RCA and digital optical jacks at the same time, and you can have both audio sources playing at the same time. A button on the headphone allows switching between the two. As is the case with pretty much any piece of electronics one buys these days, the only documentation in the box is a quick-setup guide, and it gets you going just fine. A 25-page user guide is available at the Insignia website, and the setup guide gives the web address. As I said at the top, I love these headphones in terms of comfort and audio quality. If you want to have wireless headphone capability for an audio source that wouldn’t otherwise have it, you will not go wrong with the Insignia Digital Wireless Headphones.

    Couldn't get it to work

I feel I can't give this item a true review as I never got it to work. I asked a person working in the TV, Audio department about these wireless headphones, and they said it was easy to set up and had good reviews. It was not easy to set up with my TV brand and with my sound bar. My TV only has one optical audio output and that has to go to my Sonos soundbar. That left the RCA cables. No matter what I did or how I configured the cables, I could get no sound. (And FYI, I'm not a total technological nincompoop. I'm usually the one my family and friends ask for help with anything technological.) I went back to the store to ask someone else for advice and finally I found out the answer. These headphones will only work (where you already have a soundbar at least) if your TV has a Headphones jack... which mine does not. So that was several days of climbing behind the TV area with a flashlight, thinking maybe today I'll get it to work, when that was never going to happen. I do wish I had spoken with that gentleman before, but oh well. It was busy before Christmas, and not everyone can be an expert. At least I learned something.

This may have been partly a mistake on my part. The functionality of these are strictly for converting a hardwired audio device like a TV to the docking station, and having the docking station relay to the wireless headphones. These are NOT wireless headphones in the sense that you can connect via Bluetooth or wi-fi. You are also limited to the audio source that is connected to the docking station. This was not what i was looking for. Even when it's set up that way, the audio cuts in and out very frequently. I returned this and opted for taotronics wireless Bluetooth headphones for the typical WFH activities.
