I bought these for my father so he could hear the TV without blasting the volume for the rest of us. My smart TV had to be configured for the headset to work (there are many how-to videos on how to do this). Once I finished playing with the HDMI cable vs the optical cable (optical works best), the headset works great! My TV sound bar already had the optical cable which I used to plug into the headset base (and then used the HDMI to plug the sound bar into the TV). It works great.
