Mostly OK--A Moderate Jump from Smartphones

It has a lovely small size and no extending barrel, which keeps it very tough and reassuringly solid under rugged use. I wish the lens had a built in cap because it's annoying to have to take the cap off whenever I want to use it, but I could just slap a UV filter over the front element and use it like that. In any case, the images were fine, but nothing to write home about. The sensor captures images that really suffer in low light. Since it doesn't take raw photos, there's very little I can do in Capture One to fix poor lighting conditions. The screen on the back makes it difficult to monitor shooting because it has very low resolution (921K dots). Video says it's 4K, but I never got 4K videos that matched the detail and quality of my better cameras even in good lighting conditions. I think the lens needs some refining, despite the lovely Zeiss text on the front. The contrast detection autofocus was fine, but wasn't very confidence inspiring. There were a lot of pulsations during video. The rolling shutter was also disappointing for such a small sensor. What is nice is that it offers color science that is better than what smartphones currently offer. Overall, I love the idea of a fixed 20mm compact camera, but I wish it had a few more premium features like a slide-in viewfinder, a slightly sharper lens with less vignetting, a more competent autofocus system, a couple more controls, an automatically retracting lens cap, and actually nice sounding built-in microphones. Fixed lens compact cameras don't have to be bargain basement cameras. For now, I'll stick to my Powershot G1 X Mark III.

There seems to be a lot of opinions about it out there on the internet but as someone who wanted a good camera that took photos and videos but doesn't know too much about cameras themselves, it's a perfect fit. The set up is pretty easy and there aren't so many settings that you'll be overwhelmed. There's a button for recording a video and a button for taking a still image without you having to switch back and forth between the two, which is such a nice feature. It also comes with a windmuff. Other cameras were just way too big and complicated for my needs, so this seems to be the best of both worlds - in my budget and exactly what I needed as a beginner (though I don't imagine I will ever buy a bigger camera).
