This is a little powerhouse! I named her Zena, She isn't much to look at but she is sturdy and powerful. Exactly what I needed for gaming. I originally used a monitor because I was coming from a much larger screen. But with a few tweaks on the display she holds the content and maintains high framerate.

The Acer Nitro 5 is a decent gaming laptop with some minor flaws that make it fall just short of what I would want in a gaming machine. To start with the pros, it has a fairly pleasant-to-use keyboard. It comes with a numpad, something that I don't often see in laptop keyboards nowadays, and while the keys themselves lack tactile feedback due to not using mechanical switches, an exclusion that baffles me in a gaming-oriented machine, they are surprisingly comfortable to use. The screen similarly is decent but nothing particularly noteworthy, getting fairly bright and having somewhat good color accuracy with HD resolution at 1920x1080p but never really pushing further. The touchpad is a good size and the laptop comes with just enough ports that you will likely not be hurting too badly for more. Similarly, the speakers are just okay, but you will probably be wanting to use a pair of external speakers and a microphone or a headset for gaming or calls. When gaming, I found that it performed pretty well, reaching consistently around 60fps or more in most games I tested on medium to high settings, without stutters or frame drops. The screen doesn't exactly make games "pop" but you can absolutely have a good time. Unfortunately, this laptop does have its drawbacks. These began at delivery: FedEx mangled the box and it came partially opened, which led to some concern that the laptop itself was damaged. Thankfully not, and that isn't necessarily the fault of the laptop, but I do believe that Acer's decision to ship the laptop in a box sealed with one single strip of tape is inviting problems. Another issue that is immediately apparent is that this laptop is fairly heavy! For commuters like students or office workers, lugging this to and fro in a backpack will quickly tire your back and shoulders out. The fans get somewhat loud under load as well, but not as loud as some other gaming laptops I've tested, and with a headset on you will not be too bothered. Still, it is something to keep in mind considering that this laptop does regularly get hot in use and especially when gaming and those fans will be ramping up during heavy gaming sessions. Another issue I faced that dampened my experience with this laptop is the poor battery life. I expect gaming laptops to not exactly excel in this department, but in testing, I found it could last sometimes as little as two hours when gaming which makes it tough to recommend for someone hoping to use it away from the wall for any decent length of time. Of course, battery life isn't an issue if you plan to use this laptop plugged into the wall — but for this form factor, portability is usually an important part of the experience, and having two aspects of this laptop take away from its portability make me hesitant to say that it makes a good gaming laptop for anybody hoping to use it as...well, a gaming laptop, and not a gaming laptop connected to the wall 24/7. Some more minor nitpicks are that the touchpad's clickiness is a bit unsatisfying and could be improved upon and that the webcam doesn't support Windows Hello and is lacking even for a budget laptop, making it a basically worthless inclusion in my opinion as anybody needing a webcam for regular use will likely need to get an external one. I also found the red LEDs to be an eyesore, as someone who is a gamer but does not enjoy the "gamery" aesthetic of many gamer-oriented devices and peripherals. The Nitro 5 leans too heavily into the aspects of that aesthetic that I personally find tacky, and I wish that the red could be changed to literally any other color. Something to consider for both the gamers and non-gamers eyeing this laptop is the specs, namely the RAM and storage. At 512 GB storage and 16 GB ram, I do question the future-proofing of this machine. There is the option for upgradeability so props to Acer for that, but for anybody looking at the base specs of this laptop, they are just not enough in today's day and age. 16 GB of ram for gaming is the bare minimum for many modern titles, and 512 GB of storage will get rapidly eaten up by any modern Steam library. If you are new to PC gaming and don't have many games, play mostly older games, or perhaps even are hoping to use this device for work instead of play, this won't be an issue. Even then, however, you may find the RAM and storage to be a thorn in the side as storage and memory requirements for productivity applications and browsers inch ever higher year by year. If you noticed a trend in this review, it'll be that nothing in this laptop particularly stands out in an overly positive or negative way. All in all, the Acer Nitro 5 is a laptop that is "mid" in my most honest opinion. It offers a budget experience at an okay price. For the right user, this is the perfect laptop — but for myself, I wished Acer had pushed the Nitro 5 a little harder all around to create a more interesting machine. There are better options at this price point that offer more in every area the Nitro 5 is hurting and the Nitro 5 itself doesn't offer anything unique enough to stand out on its own.
