good but just misses being great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.the good: display - To me, this is the stand out feature on this laptop. Absolutely beautiful OLED screen with a super fast refresh rate (240Hz) and good resolution (2560 x 1600). Just...wow. design - This is a "good" but also a "bad" in my opinion. We just haven't quite figured out how to take care of thermals in a machine this slim, but it is definitely thin and light for what it is and can do. The Nvidia 4070 GPU is somewhat limited by this laptop's ability to cool it. inputs (keyboard/track pad) - Both feel premium, and the glass trackpad is huge, very Macbook Pro-like. Key travel is not bad at all, with full RGB memory (RAM/storage) - This is good but again, also bad. 32GB of DDR5X RAM, which is a lot and pretty dang fast, but it's also soldered to the MB, meaning you can't upgrade it should you ever need to. Not that you really would at 32, but keep this in mind. ports - Nice selection, including full size hdmi 2.1, 2 USB C, 2 USB A, MicroSD card reader the "just ok": gaming performance - Everything else about this laptop is either 5 stars or pretty close to it, but the 4070 is really limiting in my testing. Not "bad", mind you, but certainly not befitting a machine over $2k in my opinion. Still, FPS will likely be fine for all but esports players, so the 240Hz screen is a bit overkill for this card. noisy fan - Again, to be expected in a laptop this thin, but the fan goes into berzerker mode, depending on the workload. A bit annoying if you're gaming w/o headphones, but probably not a huge deal otherwise. on board speakers - They're billed as "Audio Excellence with 6 speaker Atmos". Maybe a bit hyperbole? They don't sound bad by any means, but they are just tiny laptop speakers. There's only so much you can do with such a small space. the bad: temperature - Thermal dissapation is pretty rough, especially on the top of the keyboard chassis, just above the keys. Almost too hot to touch during a gaming session. Luckily everywhere else seems to be just "warm" and not "let's put the kettle on to boil some water for tea." battery life - A victim of the "thin and light" again, only so much you can do with this much space. The battery life is ok, expect maybe 5-6 hours, unless you're gaming, in which case you really should plug into power... overall: Overall it's a decent machine, even better than in some areas. The somewhat crippled 4070 and cooling unfortunately knock one star off for me. Still recommended if your priority is a decent thin and light gaming machine (and otherwise of course, it's still a beast for most activities). 4 stars.

Excellent Machine
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Had it a couple weeks and love it. Had an old Thinkpad T430 so jumping from 14 to 16 wasn't a big issue. Plus was only 1/2 inch larger but 1/2 inch slimmer and 2/3lb lighter. I do wish it had a slide/cover for the camera.

Great laptop plagued with sleep issues in BIOS 310
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I want to start the review off by saying I LOVE this laptop. Everything performs flawlessly when it's on. However, there is a sleep issue that was introduced with BIOS version 310 where the laptop will not wake back up from sleep despite making sure all drivers are up to date. Reverting back to BIOS version 306 resolves the issue for me. ASUS Support has been no help. See my thread on the ROG Forum: https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/gaming-notebooks/asus-rog-zephyrus-g16-ga605wi-bios-version-310-issues-with/m-p/1083212#M9905

Gorgeous but loud.

Great PC
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Beautiful device. Platinum white is a game changer from the usual dark grey look. Performs very well. It gets warm so I recommend a cooling pad.

Bad thermals
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bad thermals and felt “fragile” due to its minimal design and slim body. Gets to a point of where its extremely uncomfortable to rest your palms and use the keyboard because its burning hot.

Did ASUS just create the perfect workhorse laptop?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In the World of Windows, if you want a good workhorse laptop, you're usually looking for a gaming laptop. But that often times comes with drawbacks like being a lot bulkier than your "mainstream" laptops, definitely heavier and running hotter and with less battery. But all of those are ultimately sacrifices you make for the better performance. It seems like ASUS really wanted to challenge this status quo and with the G16 they manage to address all of these common issues: the laptop is just over 4 pounds, which for a 16" GAMING laptop is CRAZZZYYY. It's got a strikingly thin yet premium aesthetic with "Slash Lighting" that's reminiscent of a mullet - it allows this laptop to still have a professional presence in the front, but is a subtle party in the back. The battery was the best I've experienced on a gaming laptop while running cooler than the last gaming laptop I owned as well. When you get the laptop to the desktop, the OLED panel is nothing less than stunning. I couldn't wait to log into Netflix and checkout some videos on it and it certainly did not disappoint. I should also mention this has to be (arguably) the best audio I've ever come out of a Windows laptop as well. While we're talking about the screen - two things really bothered me about the last gaming laptop I owned (and yes it was OLED as well); first, the screen always seems pixelated with everyday use. It was very reminiscent of say an inkjet printed page. This ASUS laptop is SHARP. Like text from a laser printer. The second thing was it had an annoying wobble when you typed. Basically the laptop screen became a boggle doll. In my opinion, this is a sign of poor hinge design and I'm happy to report this was not an issue on the G16. Very sturdy. Under the hood, this G16 is a BEAST. The latest MD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, 32GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 and 2TB SSD - seriously what else could you ask for? And the AMD really delivers in some places where my last Intel gaming laptop fell flat like battery life and heat. Browsing the web with the settings optimized for battery (silent mode as they call it), I easily got between 9 and 9/12 hours. When Watching Netflix, with the settings optimized for performance (to get the best possible picture), I was easily able to get almost 7 hours of battery. When the battery IS low, this thing juices back up VERY quickly. Port-wise, it's got 1x 3.5 audio; 1x HDMI 2.1; 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type A; 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C; 1x Type-C USB 4; 1x Card Reader. I do wish there was more an extra USB-C instead of the dual USB-A's since those are on their way out, but they give you other upgrades that future proof you like WiFi 7. I did get to try some video editing on this and I have to say I was shocked. This G16 bested my desktop with an i9, 32GB RAM and an 8GB dedicated graphics card in regards to performance. What would I change or improve? Outside of switching one of both of those USB-A's for USB-C's, I would also add multi-zone lighting to the keyboard. I guess the single zone keeps with the subtleness of the Slash Lighting though. Under load, the fan can also get a little loud. I'd say it's about on par with my desktop when it's under load as well (for reference this is an all-in-one so it's not as bad as it sounds). TLDR: ASUS has been listening and more importantly they delivered! GAMERS REJOICE! You can have your cake and eat it too and this laptop should be a model for other OEMs to depart from tried and true -- when it comes to the status quo of gaming laptops having to be heavy, chunky, plasticky, hot, machines with awful battery to achieve performance.
