This 4k is the best this has ever been. From the opening audio to the visuals is outstanding.

This is a classic, with Kubrick at the height of his artistic powers. This is still one of the very best depictions of space travel as it actually would be any time in the foreseeable future. It's almost unique in its authenticity. And still it presents a stark beauty not buried by the technology it depicts. The cinematography is gorgeous. The soundtrack of Classical pieces meshes with the imagery in a flawless manner. This despite the fact the soundtrack was only supposed to be a placeholder for an original score that was never added. That just underscores the care with which Kubrick constructed this film. This would all be for naught if the story or characters were not engaging or well developed. They are the equal of the films visual mastery. I remember watching '2001' in its original 70MM release and being stunned. I had never seen anything like it, and have still seen little that rivals it. And, of course, almost every out of control computer in cinema can trace its lineage back to HAL. I still get a lump in my throat when (spoiler alert) HAL meets his fate.

You either love or get bored by this movie. Watching it with the commentary is worthwhile.

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most important movies ever made, not just in science fiction, but in cinematic history, period. When it came out in 1968, audiences had never seen anything like it. In many ways, with its classical score (particularly the Blue Danube Waltz during the space station docking sequence) and incredible special effects, it paved the way for movies like Star Wars, which came less than a decade later. It's also one of my favorite movies, and this 50th anniversary re-release and remaster blew me away, with the clarity of the visuals and music. the package comes with a bonus booklet that features reproductions of the concept art done for Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece. I'm glad I came across this at my local Best Buy, shopping with my birthday coupon. It made a nice present to myself. Highly recommended for any sci-fi buff or movie fan.
