Retro Fun
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased as a gift for a family member, but I got to play around with it a little bit. More fun than most of the "gamer" cruft on the market today, though I am not a fan of clicky switches.

Fully Functional Fun!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Nostalgia is a funny thing. If you had told me 30+ years ago we would be excitedly buying and using keyboards that look like they are from the 80’s I would have said you’re nuts. What’s stranger to me is the craze among my son and his fellow teens for the things from my youth, like nostalgia for things they weren’t alive to see but somehow feel a connection to. This 8BitDo Retro N keyboard evokes a very specific time and design (Nintendo), and it certainly hits all the visual cues. I was surprised to discover that under the “novelty” of the visible exterior is an outstanding, capable device that exceeds expectations. It’s obvious that the look of this keyboard is designed to appeal to the retro gamer set. It is very much the opposite of all the RGB lit, shiny-slick gamer keyboards in all the right ways. I could go on and on about all the little details of the design, but those are visible in any picture of the keyboard. Let me put aside all the outward looks, and just talk about the 8BitDo Retro N just as a keyboard. I expected that this keyboard would be, as I mentioned earlier, more novelty than functional. Boy was I wrong. This is an outstanding keyboard, particularly at the price point it sells for, and if it had a number pad, I would replace my office keyboard (another brand of mechanical-type) with it today. The build quality feels extremely strong, they keys are satisfyingly clicky and reliably responsive. In fact I like these keys better than the Browns I have in my office keyboard. The sound and feel might not be for everyone, but I like them. Connectivity options are outstanding with Bluetooth (my favorite), wireless USB dongle connection (my son’s preference when using) and wired using the USB connection, which I never used, but is a nice option to have. The power and selector switches feel robust and ad to the old-school feel. I ended up using the volume know more than I should have just because I could. There are also ports for the extra buttons that I will talk about more later. The actual board is slightly smaller than full-sized, but has every key I need EXCEPT a number pad. As an aside I tried an aftermarket add-on number pad I had bought years ago, but it just didn’t feel or look right with this keyboard. I looked it up and 8BitDo does make a matching add-on number pad, but it seemed a bit pricey to me. In addition, there are A/B buttons like on a D-Pad game controller that are programable. I was impressed at how simple it was to “pre-set” the buttons as shortcuts right through the keyboard without any additional software. 8BitDo does have a software suite that allows great customization, but I felt that I could do everything I wanted without it, so I never tried it. It was so simple to change the presets that I did so when switching from office work (Copy/Paste) to some light gaming. Ok, let’s talk about the Super buttons. These big red A/B buttons connect to the keyboard via a wire and like the A/B buttons included on the board itself they are customizable in function. This is especially nice in games as I found that grew used to going to the super buttons with my off hand which added a fun arcade like feel to everything. I experimented with using the super buttons for office work, but they just weren’t as natural a fit to things I was doing. I found the buttons as responsive as the smaller ones on the board, though I did find that they might benefit from a slightly longer wire or the ability to plug them each in independently. As they come both buttons are mounted in a single base and without purchasing an additional set (the keyboard can support up to 4 pads) you can’t place one on either side of the keyboard or even just slightly separated for better ergonomics/feel. The package also includes an old school joystick. Like the Super buttons, the joystick connects to the keyboard with a wire and additionally can magnetically attach to the side of the Super Button’s base. In this configuration you have the perfect little set up for some old-school arcade fun. The joystick can also be customized through the keyboard or software. I imagine that there may be some ways to utilize the joystick that don’t involve games that used to use quarters but I didn’t try any. The stick really feels like it was made for abuse, and functioned just fine for my needs, but overall got less use than any other part of the keyboard. If I were a “tablet gamer” this might be a great addition, again for more arcade like action. Since this is a wireless keyboard I think it is worth mentioning the battery life. When I first unpacked it, I charged the keyboard overnight and after just over a week of use for a couple of hours each evening it is still going strong. I plan to run the battery right out just to see how long it will go because I have the backup of being able to plug it in and use it wired, which is a nice option and means I don’t need to carry extra AA or AAA batteries. Overall I really like this keyboard as a fun supplemental piece. The inclusion of a number pad would make this the perfect keyboard for my everyday use. It has become the primary keyboard for my gaming setup (laptop and monitor separate from my office equipment). After helping me test all the functionality my son has asked for one for his setup to replace his plain jane office style keyboard he uses with his Xbox. I would recommend this keyboard not just as a fun piece of nostalgia, but as a very functional peripheral.

Great keyboard for work.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great keyboard. Battery management works well. I use it for work, not sure how the responsiveness would be for gaming but I can't complain. The buttons are great for quickly mute/unmute zoom calls. Marco buttons are easy to set. I like the keyboard so much, I own two.

Great keyboard, not great quality assurance
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Keyboard is everything I wanted it to be. Functions exactly like advertised (even sounds exactly like the youtube video they posted). The issue I have with my purchase is the magnets in my super buttons and joy stick were installed backwards. My super buttons REPEL my joystick rather than binding to it. Pretty annoying to say the least and now I am out of best buys return window. Will sadly have to deal with this issue for many years to come. 8bitdo, please tell Shenzhen Onebitdo Tech Co to yell at whoever is on the assembly line putting the magnets in backwards.

Good keyboard, especially if on sale
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Solid ten-keyless keyboard with old school video game style. If you like clicky switches, this is a good choice, especially if you get it on sale (can frequently be found for $10-$20 less than retail).
