Capable hardware held back by drivers
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the performance you get at this price point In my opinion this is the best budget gaming laptop you can get. The RX 560X is between a GTX 1050 and GTX 1050Ti. The Ryzen 5 2500u is a 4 core 8 thread CPU that is very capable without being power hungry. This translates to better battery life. I managed to get around 5-6 hours of usage before needing to plug in. This was a mixed usage of doing Windows updates, YouTube and web browsing. For gaming expect this to drop to around 2-3 hrs from a full charge. This is the case with all gaming laptops when it comes to gaming on battery so don’t be alarmed by this number. Compared to my other gaming laptop with a 6 core i7 and GTX 1060 I get half of the Nitro 5 battery life. Performance it felt fast as my other gaming laptop only time I noticed slow down was when it’s loading Windows 10 and installing/loading games. This is due to the 1tb platter hard drive. If you ever used a windows machine with an SSD the difference is night and day when it comes to boot times and file installation. For example from a cold boot my other laptop is ready to go after 15 seconds the Nitro 5 takes around 1 min before I can start to use Windows without experiencing slowdowns due to Windows still loading stuff. It helps to limit the number of programs that start up when loading Windows. There is another SKU same specs except you get an SSD. If you can I would recommend to go that route instead since it’s a lot easier to install a hard drive and you don’t have to deal with reinstalling Windows to an SSD. Build quality even though is all plastic it’s very good. The top has a brushed finish to it and the laptop itself feels very solid. The screen is an FHD IPS panel and it’s very nice for this price point. The colors are bright and colorful that can get very bright when plugged in. Viewing angles are good and I did enjoyed consuming media on this laptop and games too. This is the same display as the Helios 300 which that one retails around 1100. Refresh rate is 60hz which is good enough for this GPU since most games will run around low-mid settings at 1080p resolution. Older Triple A titles you can bump those quality settings to high and in some games to ultra at 1080p resolution. Thermals are very good even when gaming for an hour the laptop did not get hot as my other laptop or loud either. Nitro Sense allows you to adjust the fan speed and overall performance if you want to take advantage of everything this chipset has to offer. Now to the bad stuff which is more on AMD side for not handling this situation a lot better when it comes to new hardware. The issue is driver support from day one and Radeon software not doing a better job when it comes to switchable graphics. The RX 560X is similar to the RX 560 that was released last year but with a slightly higher clocked speeds that translates to 5-10% performance gains. At first games like Fortnite at medium settings fps was around 8-10. The problem was due to games running with the integrated Vega 8 GPU instead of the discrete RX 560X GPU. The only way I managed to fix this without having to disable the Vega 8 GPU was to go to the switchable graphics settings on the Radeon software and set it to performance on the games. After this my FPS jumped to 60 on Fortnite. My next game to test was Forza Horizon 4 benchmarks came to an average of 48FPS on high settings at 1080p resolution. I was surprised to see those results since my expectations were around the low 30s. Well when it came time to playing there was too much stutter that made the game unplayable. FPS would drop from 48 to 10 which felt like the game was pausing. Even at medium settings or low I could not get rid of this stutter. This can be contributed to drivers since the hardware does meet the minimum pc requirements to play the game. Unfortunately even force installing new drivers created problems which in most cases the screen would just go black and I would have to load Windows into Safe Mode to roll back the driver. My recommendation is based on what the primary usuage would be for this laptop. If you’re a casual gamer and don’t play a lot of AAA titles you should be fine. If you’re a hardcore gamer and will be playing plenty of AAA titles like Forza Horizon 4, Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Black Ops 4 than you will be disappointed with performace out of the box. If you don’t mind waiting for new drivers to be released you can’t go wrong this AMD set up. Most laptop equipped with a GTX 1050Ti start around $800 and up. This configuration comes close to that type of performace but at a savings of amost $130 or even more when it’s on sale. If proper driver support was there this would easily be a 5 you're getting a whole lot of laptop for your money. If Acer does relase new drivers that fixes those issue my review will be updated to reflect those changes. For now my recommendation is based on what your primary usuage will be. If you can wait for the new drivers to be relase you will not be disappointed with your purchase. For everything else that wasn't gaming this laptop handled it like a champ.
