Great entry level gamer laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great entry level gaming laptop. The AMD Ryzen mobile 5 2500U CPU is included along with the Radeon RX 560X and 8gb of Memory. The keyboard has a numeric pad and is backlit in orange. Nitro Sense software included with the laptop (I updated it via Acer's product page along with a number of drivers.) keeps tabs on the CPU and GPU temperature. I read a few places where the bios needed updated from 8 to 9 I believe. When I ran the .exe bios update, it said I had a newer version already installed (10 I believe). The RX 560X has Radeon settings software that allows the users to select switchable graphics between power saving, high performance and power based on source. The quad core Ryzen 5 is very responsive and works very well for the demands I need in a laptop. The laptop comes with 8gb of DDR4 SDRAM memory, but it can be upgraded to 32gb if you want to remove the 8gb and put in 2 16gb sticks. Replacing or adding ram is easy. There's an access panel on the bottom that exposes the existing ram and an empty socket directly in front of it. Nice Acer, better than my older laptop that required opening up the laptop. The keyboard is non-mechanical but seems pretty responsive. The keyboard has a number pad which causes the trackpad to be off center, lining up with the spacebar. The WASD keys are lit up brighter than the rest with the keys outlined in orange for gaming. The keys are constantly lit when on AC power, but they go out very quickly if you're on battery and you don't touch a key. With a single stroke on battery, the keys light back up. This unit came with a 1tb hard drive and it too is accessible through a door on the bottom of the unit. I had read other reviews that there was an empty bay to add an SSD drive, but I didn't see that with this model. I'll have to research it a bit more. As for ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports on the right side of the unit and 1 USB 3.0 on the left. Is there any reason except price to still include USB 2.0? The unit also has a lan port on the left as well as HDMI, SD slot, and USB -C. There is also a Kensington lock slot on the left. Speakers on this unit aren't great, but they aren't as bad as many laptops I've owned. The 2 speakers are forward facing, so there's that. There is built in camera and mic. I was able to use Cortana in the setup by voice. Display is backlit LED 1920 x 1080. Acer proudly has a sticker on the monitor stating full HD 1080. Overall, just a nice entry level gamer laptop or a pretty nice everyday laptop for heavy users. My only complaints would be that it had Norton on it and I had to remove that and reboot. I'm a Bitdefender user, so removing preinstalled security software is always a bummer. Also, the unit required updates out of the box. That's not many issues with all the good stuff packed into this laptop, just a bit of time to get it up to date. I'd recommend it to a friend.

Would not buy again
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Right out of the box, this laptop starting having a black screen. I had to look up on my phone how to restart it because a hard shut off wasn't working. They said it was a processor issue. I've rarely used this laptop over the last year, and I am the only one who uses it, for very basic functions and a little offline game play. It takes a great deal of time to turn on. It's also a struggle to transfer pics over, with the transfer getting interrupted repeatedly and I have to find what transferred and what did not. It was so rough I gave up on it and now I don't have a hard copy backup of pics in my phone. I would not buy the same laptop again.

Terrible Laptop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a Terrible laptop, DONT BUY. Very slow, and will not run some games even though it meets minimum requirements. What they don't tell you is with this laptop. Acer releases updates for the Graphics card NOT Radeon. and they are like a year behind. So even though Radeon is up to date to play a game it doesn't matter Acer is not.

Budget Friendly Gaming Laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Acer comes in with a gaming laptop that is meant to get you in to the gaming scene at an affordable price. What exactly they have to offer and rather or not this will be a good buy is kind of up to you and your gaming preferences. I reviewed this product strictly from a gaming and performance stand point. I didn't take apart the laptop as most of the nitro series are pretty much the same set up with differences to hardware. Hopefully this review will help guide you in your buying decision. First off let me start by saying this is definitely a entry level gaming system. Keep in mind there are laptops on the market that easily reach in to the thousands some even hitting 10k. But don't let that put you off, at this price point Acer is actually offering quite a bit for the gamer looking to get in to the pc world or one on a budget. So lets talk about what you get with the nitro line up. The screen is a beautiful 15.6" HD 1080 screen. While it does not display in 4k make no doubt its still very good graphics that will please the eye. You have a couple of usb ports one being a 2.0 and the other 3.0, a usb c and LAN port. The keys are lit up red for easy viewing with the WASD keys light up around the borders to help set them apart. The fist thing i noticed while gaming were the keys. They seem slightly smaller and very close together. This is kind of a turn off for me as i found myself from time to time hitting the wrong keys during gaming. The keys are also standard key so don't expect a mechanical set up and they seem really soft and almost squishy as if i hit them too hard they may break. They are responsive enough however i always prefer to have a mechanical set up. Also if this is your first time getting into pc gaming don't expect to receive a cd drive just fyi this one does not come with one as most gaming, at least for me, is done through steam. Now your are powering this system with the Ryzen quad core processor backed with the Radeon RX 560 X graphics card at 2 GHZ. I personally prefer Nvidia however that just preference for me plus the 2 GHZ speed seems too slow for me. These are just my personal preferences but without confusing you just know that this is more then enough power to get you in there and play alot of the newer and older games that are out there. Streaming games like World of Warcraft, Fall out and even the new Red Dead Redemption 2 are gonna work just fine and display beautifully. The Acer uses two cooling fans with two cross over tubes helping with heat displacement. One thing i will give Acer is their heat displacement is pretty good. In the past i have actually fried one of my gaming laptops from running them at full capacity and melting the down cpu. While the laptop does tend to get hot as you push it, i felt it never got to the point to where it was burning my legs if i rested it on me or was going to do any internal damage. The speakers on this laptop are ok but you should never really expect alot out of them as i find most people including myself wear headphones when gaming. Lets talk gaming. I like to play alot of online and single player rpg. World of Warcraft streams beautifully on this system. With my graphics turned up all the way i was actually really surprised to see that it ran smoothly with no lag or blurs. Now World of Warcraft in opinion isn't what i would call a visual master piece so i wanted to see what it could do against some of the more visual games such as Fallout. All i have to say is WOW. For being such a entry level piece displaying at 1080 i was blown away at how good the texturing and light rendering looked on the display. I forgot that it was only an HD resolution and not 4k with how beautiful everything looked. Alot of times you have to sacrifice performance in order to get a visual master piece however everything ran just fine with no issues that i saw. Now i did run into some issues while playing Call of Duty. I noticed there were some delays in my shots getting fired. What i mean by this is, is that as i was playing pvp when i would let a round off it seemed as if there was a slight delay before it actually fired versus when i pressed the button. I know that is common on console gaming which is why most TVs have a gaming mode. Luckily however i think i was able to remedy this by tuning down my graphics. As i set my settings lower i noticed everything seemed to run smoother. I think the game was maybe just a little too fast pace for the system to keep up. Although once i got my settings dialed in everything seemed to run real smooth. Here's my final verdict. While this wouldn't be my first pick for a gaming laptop simply because i do alot of gaming and i prefer higher output, this still is a very good system. If you are on a budget or are barely getting in to the gaming market then this is definitely the way to go. When i first got in to pc gaming i payed about $800 dollars for a entry level gaming system that offered way less then what Acer is putting out and this was back in the very early 2000s. If your a hardcore gamer then this may not be too pleasing of a buy for you as there is more to offer off the line. Either way this is a really good buy at this price point that offers alot in the way of gaming and i don't think you will be disappointed

Nitro 5 W/AMD RyZen 5
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Full disclosure, I use my desktop for most of my gaming then go between that and my PS4. This laptop gets me away from that and surprised me with its small footprint but powerful chops in the gaming arena. I tested Call of Duty "Black Ops" and even though this is a heavy duty graphics game the graphics card (RX560X) just killed it!! The 1080 HD screen is just sick!!! Used my wireless headset and it was awesome to hear. I haven't has an AMD for some time now and I am a believer. The backlit is great at night when I sneak away into my corner of the house to hide out and play my games while the wife watches Dancin with the stars. I would definitely recommend this for anyone that likes a bit of mobility and or travel and wants a small but powerful gaming laptop. The only real bad thing I found with this sweet gem is the charging unit is a bit large for traveling. So make sure you have a case that can handle all the room needed to pack it. Hey with this much power in a small laptop you really can afford a bit of space. That's why I gave it 4 stars out of 5. To all my gaming buds, this baby is the real deal.

great gamer travel companion.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First impression, I was shocked and curious at what the Nitro 5 has to offer, so I decided to try. The Acer bestows the Nitro 5 with a clean design, although it won't be mistaken for a business laptop, and it's far from sleek or elegant. The lid's exterior is ever-so-slightly sculpted and includes an understated gray Acer logo embossed in the middle. The rear edge, however, comprises a red strip and a massive cooling grille, only the left half of which is a functional fan exhaust outlet (the right half is simply decorative). It's flashy, but nowhere near the in-your-face gaming aesthetic that you'll find on the competition. What’s under the hood you ask, on the left, you'll find a Kensington lock slot next to a compact Ethernet port that expands to accept the plastic locking tab on an Ethernet cord. There's also a USB-C port (but it doesn't support Thunderbolt 3), an HDMI port, a USB 3.0 port, and an SD card reader. Meanwhile, two USB 2.0 ports, an audio-out jack, and a power connector live on the right edge. If you have a massive game collection stored on a few external hard drives, you might lament the lack of a second USB-C or USB 3.0 port, but you'll be fine if you're just plugging in an external mouse and keyboard. The Nitro 5 also includes 802.11ac Wi-Fi. Acer Nitro 5 packs an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU with 4GB of VRAM. It's a very good performer for the price and can even play more graphics-intensive games if you keep them at lower settings. I spent a few hours playing Fortnite it’s highest settings with no issues, but the Nitro 5's midrange graphics card doesn't hold up when playing demanding titles at high resolutions. Frame rates dropped to an unplayable 21.33 fps when the Metro was kicked on: Last Light in 1080p resolution. At the same level of detail, Hitman played at 42 fps, below the budget-gaming category average of 55 fps but still playable. The Acer Nitro 5 did an excellent job of keeping up with my rigorous browsing habits. I was able to load a dozen Google Chrome tabs and a Microsoft Word document without seeing slowdowns. Of those web pages, one was playing a 1080p YouTube video while the other ran a Battlefield V (Alpha) Twitch stream at the same resolution. It's not surprising that the Nitro 5 achieved a solid score of 14,219 in the Geekbench 4.1 test, which measures overall performance. It's slightly higher than the entry-level gaming laptop average (14,291). I ran the system myself through these tests off and on for four days straight with no dip in performance (shocking I know). So overall, I think that compared to current competition, the Nitro 5 is a great midrange travel gamer laptop that will not break the budget while allowing hours of stress-free gaming on the go. Would I recommend to friends and family? Yep, I definitely would!
