Great entry or mid-level Gaming PC
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop looks like a high end gaming device, with the cool keyboard that lights up, and contoured keys. The hot red glow highlights all the key symbols, plus some of the "hot keys" even have red borders to make them stick out even more. When the device is closed, the giant cooling vents in the back make this thing look like it was modeled after a Lamborghini Aventador. The screen is an IPS screen, so images on it are easy to see from almost any angle. It's only 1080p, but for the size of the screen, I think that is sufficient for most any game. It does however come with an HDMI output, so you can hook up a second monitor or HDTV. When selecting to output only through the HDMI, 4K results are possible. I played "Portal 2" with absolutely no lag, or issues, the game ran flawlessly. So I then decided to put this laptop to the test with "Witcher 3: The Hunt", it ran very well under the regular settings, 50 to 60 FPS with reliable performance. I was able to output to my 4k Samsung HDTV, the picture looked amazing, but my FPS took a small dive. I was able to hold 30ish FPS on 4k output with medium to lower game graphic settings. While this laptop unfortunately can't handle all graphic options on the game maxed out, it can definitely play smooth with a good mix of some higher settings, and some lower(like number of enemies, and such..) To get the best performance for your games make sure that your "power options" in windows settings, are set to "high performance" for both battery and plugged in mode. Otherwise your games FPS and performance will drop when unplugging the power cord. As with most Windows PC's I was able to just plug one of my XBOX ONE controllers into the usb port and use it without effort, (plug and play). You can also activate the "game mode" by pressing the "X" logo on the controller, or with the "windows key + G" on the keyboard. Activating game mode, can increase the games overall performance and give you options for broadcasting or recording your game. Also, just to note, as with most newer laptops, this device does not come with an optical drive. So all of your game installations will have to either be downloads, or by an external usb DVD/CD drive. This device also comes with a few perks from ACER, "Acer collection S" tries to give you a customized suggestion of additional software for your use, and "Nitro Sense" which gives you direct access to cooling fan manual/auto adjustments, and power options. "Care Center" is a great tune up utility where you can keep your pc running lean. Radeon also gives you access to your GPU with an excellent settings app, that lets you change virtually everything about how your games run. Overall this is a very capable GAMING LAPTOP, you should be able to play pretty much everything you want, depending on the display quality, and complexity of the game. Very High performance games can still play great, but with reduced output setting.

Excellent way to get into PC gaming for less
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.PC gaming has come so far, and thanks to this you can now get decent gaming laptops for a lot less without sacrificing great performance and specs. Thats where the Acer Nitro comes in. At only $670 (sometimes less due to sales) you get a very nice entry level gaming laptop to get you going into PC gaming. In the box you get the Acer Nitro laptop, power adapter, and a sleeve. Set up is pretty straight forward and is like setting up most other Windows 10 laptops. The laptop itself has an incredible build. I really like the black and red theme. Looks very high end without high end prices. Its a very solid, yet sleek and beautiful device all at the same time. Specs wise it has a very nice FHD IPS display, AMD Radeon RX 560X graphics, a full 1TB hard drive, 8 gigs of ram, and AMD Rizen 5 processor, HDMI out which is great (more on this later), a back lit keyboard, and more, and all under 6lbs. The screen is great. Very high quality, and I see no reason to really need 4K on a smaller screen. So the FHD screen is perfect for a laptop in my opinion. Great color, crisp graphics, movies look great. Its just an overall solid display. The sound is pretty good as well. Although I prefer to do all my gaming with headphones. The speakers work pretty darn good here. A slight bit of distortion and high volumes, but they are loud enough that I see no reason to have to crank them up to that level. Gaming works surprisingly well here. I wasnt expecting this kind of performance from a laptop, let alone one under $700. Games run smooth with excellent framerate, little to no lag at all even when a lot is going on. And as mentioned before I really like that it has an HDMI out. Even on my personal Acer laptop I use the HDMI out to my 55” Samsung TV as a monitor. And its amazing to connect the Nitro up and get to play on a large screen. I know this defeats the point of a portable gaming machine, but its nice that its there when Im at home and want to game on the big screen. It also has you standard connectivity options with 802.11 wireless as well as an Ethernet port you get a solid and fast connection either way. Of course this is dependent on the network you are connecting to. For me I prefer Ethernet at home when using it along with my TV as a monitor, and Wi-Fi when using the latops screen. Either way no issues at all. As a regular laptop its great as well. With the fairly high specs normal browsing, files, watching videos, etc. all work perfect. So its basically a one stop shop for all your laptop needs, personal or gaming, all in one. And again for under $700 its quite the deal. So to sum it all up. If you are looking at getting into PC gaming, but dont want to have to drop thousands of dollars to get going this is an excellent choice. It works great out of the box, and I see no need to start looking at upgrades yet. And of course with the decent specs it doubles as great regular laptop as well. So you are getting quite a bit out of this machine without breaking the bank. Very much recommended.

Painfully Slow Loading
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My first impression when I opened up the box and saw this laptop was, alright, this looks like a serious gaming laptop. It has a nice screen, back-lit keyboard (a gaming must), surprisingly good sound from the laptop speakers, and is very stylish. After waiting for what seemed like forever for it to boot up, and go through the setup process (the 1TB HGST 7200RPM hard drive just isn't cutting it), I was finally able to get into some games. First up, Black Ops 4. Unplayable at lowest settings. I was getting 23 FPS max, and major stuttering. Next I tried CS: GO, this one actually ran good FPS numbers between 80-120 at high/ultra settings, but suffered severely from input lag. Meaning you move the mouse, and there is a delay in action on the screen. I then had my daughter load and play Sims 4. It ran decent at high settings too, but also suffered from the same input lag. I'm not sure what that is caused by. I would also like to note that sometimes when I start these games, the game will start and then the screen will go black, then come back on. I think this is the GPU switching, but it's rather annoying. There has been a few occasions that the screen stayed black. Hitting the Windows key, and then selecting the game icon on the taskbar usually corrected the issue, but I shouldn't have to do that. This being so new, I hope there will be a driver or firmware update to correct this. Recent AAA titles may not play well on this laptop, but most other games will probably play just fine. If you're looking for portability and casual gaming, and don't mind long loading times, this is for you. If you're even remotely serious about gaming, I recommend looking elsewhere. At the very least I would upgrade the hard drive to an SSD. I put an old 120GB SSD in this PC, cloned Windows, and this dramatically improved my experience with this laptop.

Great budget gaming laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Calling it a laptop is not quite accurate, more appropriately is a mid-range portable gaming station. I would say this is for the casual gamer who may not necessarily care about the latest greatest games, needs a portable computer for doing work. If you are trying to consolidate your gaming to be portable and want to play latest games, you will want to step up to the next level of gaming laptops. At 6lbs its light enough to lug around in a back pack and battery life will be good enough to last you a days worth of school; I would suggest optimizing the battery settings though. There isn't an optical drive, so no CD/DVD's, but honestly everything is either streamed or downloaded anyway. The hard drive is 1TB which is great for storage of 22GB+ games these days, however, it is a bit slow on the wake up. The speed of SSD is what I am used too, so I will definitely be swapping out the HDD for one. Which is extremely easy! Direct bay access with the removal of one screw. I miss those days, most now require taking the entire underside panel off and also removing the rubber sliders/risers off too (which never stick back again even with super glue). The same goes from the RAM bay, 1 screw. The bay supports 2 slots at 8GB each. The GPU has 4GB dedicated, however, the Processor has 1GB of the System memory allocated for it, so useable memory is 7GB of 8GB, or 15GB of 16GB at full capacity. I don't know exactly when the GPU kicks and when the Ryzen 5 processor is primary, but under normal use and under gaming I haven't noticed any lag or stutter. Laptop can easily play older AAA Games and the dual fans run at low. While the sound is good, I would recommend using headphones still to cut out the fan noise and for more rich sound. YouTube/video streaming, no issues there with fan noise, just really gaming. Screen lid easily opens with 1 finger. I'd say 99.9% of the weight is in the base and the hinge is really smooth, so it opens easily. My normal work laptop is a Lenovo Yoga 720 13.3" touchscreen. I can I say I like the keyboard keys better on the Acer as they are quieter and have a bit of a bowl shape to them. However, the right SHIFT key is smaller and takes an extra reach to get it. It seems to be a trend with keyboards lately. Lenovo's low-end laptops have a ridiculous placement, the Acer 5 Nitro is way better in comparison to that. Screen has great color for IPS LCD, I wasn't expecting the color punch of touchscreen, but it did surprise me of how good it looked out-of-the-box. It does have a lot of bezel, which even thought it is 15.6" it feels smaller than my daily driver 13.3". Out-of-the-box the zoom setting under Windows 10 was set to 125%, I switched it to 100% and it definitely made the screen feel more useful. Styling is quite nice, definitely has the gamer's edge of sharp angles and red LED lighting. Which is really nice. Adding the ability to change the LED color would have been cool. Cannot change the keyboard backlight brightness level, but with it being Red, its not distracting. Definitely recommend.

Great budget gaming laptop
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I ran this guy through the paces and was able to run all my games at 60fps with minimal issues. There is great quality here for the money. Heat is typical and noise is minimal. Keyboard is very responsive and well backlit. Can't say much about the touch pad, I refuse to use them. The case is a nice build and feels good. Screen has a great look and is very crisp for 1080. If you are looking at a budget gamer for on the go then you won't go wrong with this laptop.

Incredible value for a gamer rig!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Under $600 for a gaming laptop? Can't be true, right? Well, it's true...with some considerations. I did a lot of research on the sub-$1000 market. It's easy to make comparisons of Intel/Nvidia combos. The i5 with GTX 1050 sets are common. What isn't is the AMD Ryzen 5 2600 and Radeon 560X, especially a pairing at under $600. This intrigued me. Could it really be worth another couple of hundred bucks to go Intel-Nvidia? My usual game is World of Warcraft. I was replacing an old Dell Inspiron i5 with Integrated 5500 graphics, which was really a poor gamer rig, but I could get 25 fps with WOW graphics cranked all the way down. It was playable and ugly All the Youtube vids and online research showed me that the Radeon 560X with 4GB was generally on-par with the GTX 1050. It also showed that the AMD Ryzen 5 2600 was also in line with the i5. The difference in performance being game and situation specific. Again, in my estimation, I could not justify the price increase for the Intel/Nvidia pairing. Especially when the videos I was seeing on Youtube could not demonstrate a really clear value difference for my needs. Even without an SSD and with the stock 8GB RAM vs 16, WOW is a buttery smooth 47 fps with the recommended graphics level at 7. When I crank it up to 10 (all graphics and audio settings maxed) I can get a 30 fps in non-raid or full-house situations. Where it began to falter was in a heavily populated place like an auction house. Then if cranked back to recommended settings, its back to good performance. Not unexpected. The machine itself is nice. Plastic but well built and solid. I saw some gripes about a lackluster screen. I don't agree. The screen is just fine. No complaints whatsoever. What is really impressive is how cool this thing stays! I played WOW for a couple of hours at the recommended settings and the laptop never got hot or even that warm. The keyboard has a reasonable good feel to it. Red backlit and with a nice click and tactile feel The trackpad is responsive too. At first I was going to put an M2.0 SSD and another 8GB of ram into it. I'm not sure I even need to. Sure, you have to wait the usual time for the OS and game to load with the standard 7200 RPM HDD, but it really is just the normal time. So far, even in raid and crowded situations, WOW runs great, even if I have a browser running with a couple of tabs open. Not sure I really need to upgrade, but I might just to see what happens. I think you can tell from my review that I am not a hard-core gamer. I play WOW almost exclusively. Should you consider something more powerful, like a Acer ROG or something? I guess if you need to play GTA V or something like that. But as a gamer rig for me, with my somewhat less demanding approach to gaming, I could not be happier. One small thing, I wish the keyboard back-lighting would stay on all the time instead of turning off after 30-seconds. I think Acer is going to change this because of the complaints. I did spend the first few hours doing BIOS, hardware and OS upgrades before I loaded up WOW. Normal stuff. If my gamer requirements are close to yours, even with 8GB RAM instead of 16, the 7200 RPM 1TB HDD instead of an SDD, I'm really happy with the performance. This laptop is a great bargain! Don't think that gaming requires Intel/NVidia. The AMD Ryzen 5 2600/Radeon 560X combo rocks

Nice for the price
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great gaming laptop at this price. Not as good as some more expensive laptops but if you're on a tight budget this thing is pretty good. It can play most games well and does pretty much everything else really well. No solid state drive or touchscreen but you can add a solid state drive (they keep getting cheaper). The 1 tb 7200 rpm drive gives you quite a bit of space and pretty good performance. I personally don't use touchscreens on laptops so this saves $ for me. It is a very nice display though. Nice backlit keyboard, lots of ports, no optical drive. If you're a hardcore gamer you will probably want something better but it will cost you more. But if you're budget is tight try this one. It's really nice for the price

Great when upgraded
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Out of the box I was not impressed. However once I added 8gb of ram and changed the hard drive to a SSD, the laptop became a bit of beast running everything I throw at it. The laptop actually ran better than laptops that were much more expensive. The upgrades cost a total of $100 but the laptop was just as good or better than laptops that were in $800 range

Gaming Laptop
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First and foremost - this IS a gaming laptop. It's not for HD stream-while-I-play-Fortnite-on-Twitch stuff... If you want a fast laptop that is smooth, then this is it. There is ONE caveat: It does NOT come ready to play. You do have to adjust the optional graphics mode for all apps using the AMD Radeon Settings app (or whatever it's called). Some apps will be locked down to "Power Saving" mode which means it will use the on-board graphics (the Vega portion of the CPU/APU) and run cooler. If the app/game shows that you can select either the on-board Vega graphics or the included RX 560 GPU, you can select "High Performance" and it will run the app/game with the graphics card enabled. It will run warmer - but I find that so long as you are using the laptop on a flat surface, it stays cool. Others have complained about the heat - I'm sure if you play games for 12+ hours a day this will get hot like any laptop would - but the vent/fan structure is VERY solid. If you are patient, able to follow YouTube tutorials, and have a good understanding of how to change Windows settings (what boots up at start, what optional components to uninstall, etc.) then this will serve you well for running games on HIGH settings.

The hardware itself is good. Getting it working..
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you aren't too experienced and are just looking for a laptop to play some modern games and not want to worry about much, I would look elsewhere if you aren't looking to learn a small bit about how to fix these issues. Trying out some not-so-intensive games, we noticed that they just ran abysmally. The hardware is more than capable, but we could barely even run League of Legends on the lowest setting without stutters and freezes. Turns out the computer wasn't properly switching over to the graphics card and was using the on board graphics. In order to get it working right, I first had to update the BIOS, install AMD Catalyst software that for whatever reason was not included on the device (steps which were surprisingly more difficult to complete than they needed to be), and manually change game processes to run in "High Performance." I got this when it was on sale and the value is there and now that it is working properly, we're very happy. I'm sure a lot of parents would buy this for their kids and they are just struggling to use the on board graphics not knowing that they may be leaving the dedicated graphics unused.

Upgrade this a little and it's fine
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this for my daughter to play Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite. Doubled the ram when I received it and the hard drive failed inside of the first year. That I was going to replace anyway so I didn't even go through the warranty process, just bought an MVME. All that said the laptop plays the games listed just fine. Fortnite plays between 75-100 fps @ 1080p competitive settings. The other games are completely fine from a fps standpoint as well. The people trashing the laptop for being bad at gaming need to read a little more before they buy. If you wanted a "good gaming laptop" to play all the latest titles at high frame rates you needed to spend about a thousand to fifteen hundred more. I'm amazed that a laptop that costed about $200 less than my last graphics card was able to acceptably play anything, I think this is a fine starter gaming laptop for easier or older titles at around 60fps.

Great Value!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Had this for a couple of weeks, nice modest gaming laptop, No it is not top of the line but for $570 it is a great value, plays games well on mid to high. I actually play in 1080p at low, just to stretch the battery out. Installed a M.2 Sata drive (Thanks youtube for a step by step on this model) and for just a bit more coin u have a great machine. Display is nice and so is the keyboard. Very Happy with my purchase. Best Buy associate was also very helpful when picking up after an online purchase. I also appreciate the minimal bloatware that Acer put on it.
