Customers are saying

Customers consistently note the excellent performance and large screen size as major strengths of the Nitro 5 gaming laptop. Positive feedback also highlights the good graphics, RAM, keyboard, and overall value for the price. However, some users mention that the battery life could be improved, and the laptop's weight and potential for fan noise are recurring concerns. While some users find the laptop runs warm, others report it as easy to use and upgrade.

I’m a newbie to the computer gaming world but this computer is definitely a great introduction. Graphics look amazing and so far no lag experienced. Battery life has been decent. As a minor side note I would like to mention that prior to this laptop I haven’t had a very good impression of the Acer brand. A previous laptop seemed to be decent at first but after a month or so it failed. Tablets I had were terrible. So I didn’t expect much from this despite it being a gaming machine. Definitely feel a little less hesitant to try other Acer products moving forward

Overall this a good gaming laptop. When I received my first laptop, a few of the keys on the keyboard appeared to be damaged. After a short chat with customer service, they replaced my laptop and in a matter of a week or less I had a brand new laptop. My only complaint really is the 8gb that came with it. That's enough to run a game, but not enough to run a game, and a streaming service without any issues. However, for the money, this laptop is good and is fun to use. It has a sleek design, the keyboard lights up red which makes it look even cooler at night.

A Gaming Beast on a Budget!

The Acer - Nitro 5 17.3" Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 - 512GB Solid State Drive - Obsidian Black is a beast on a budget! Acer scores big with this huge 1080p HD display and full keyboard with dedicated keys for gaming. Power under the hood gives the user plenty of boost when they need it without lag or drag from a physical hard drive. The Solid State HD speeds along at whatever pace you play. 512GB is more than sufficient for most uses, but offers a physical drive expansion option is desired. Sound is solid but lacks a bit overall for range in the highs and lows. Volume is good. Networking gaming is quick and this laptop handled every game I tested it with including POE, Star Trek Online, and Warframe as well as a variety of other Steam-based games. The only lagging issues I had seemed to be on the server side of the games. The laptop rocked everything I threw at it. For the price, it is the best option available side by side. Definitely worth grabbing if your are on a budget but don't want to sacrifice performance! PROS - ACER NitroSense and CoolBoost keeps your system running at peak performance - Intel Core i5 9th Gen chip set - NVidia GEForce GTX Video card handles everything smoothly - 1080p HD display with minimal bezel makes the 17.3" screen huge - Full-sized keyboard with gaming keys - 8GB DDR4 RAM expandable to 32GB (2 slots) - Long battery life - Good sound quality - USB-C, USB, 2-USB-ss ports, Ethernet, HDMI, audio/headphone inputs CONS - The location of the a/c charging input is poorly placed at the middle of the right hand side of the laptop. Completely in the way of a right handed mouse user and odd that it would not be in the back or back corner of the sides. My only complaint.

Loving the budget-friendly Acer - Nitro 5 for gaming. Okay, by budget-friendly, I really mean budget-friendlier, as $900 for a machine is still a bit much for some, but for a gaming machine it is definitely on the lower end, especially for the performance you get. You get a 17"+ display, 8 GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD drive, along with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 for graphics, which should meet your needs for most of today's games. This is my first machine with a built in SSD. I love the faster boot times. On my other machine, I'm sometimes wondering if I even hit power, as boot time can be relatively slow compared to this machine. I tried out several Steam-based games on the machine to great success. Graphics was sharp, refresh rate was more than sufficient, performance was as quick as needed. Will keep banging on machine with newer and newer graphics-intensive games to see how it performs, but no red flags just yet. Don't even have to come close to maxing out the brightness. My least favorite part of the machine is the keyboard. It feels a little off from what I'm typically typing on. I can't tell if it is because I'm resting my fingers differently due to the larger size (I'm tyically on a 15" laptop) or what. Perhaps I'll eventually figure out why. The top right button on the keyboard is also the power on/off button. That moves the other keys you typically see above the numeric keypad to the left one spot. I'm still adjusting to that so have hit the wrong key a few times, thankfully, not the power button. I have to figure out how to adjust the keyboard backlighting. It comes on and off too frequently for me. Second least favorite part of machine is positioning of the power adapter connection. I tend to keep mouse close to machine, or at least my right thumb, and the cord port positioning requires me to be a bit further out. I do like the ability to directly adjust the fans. And, there is room to grow in the machine for extra RAM or another SSD/HDD. Given the machine's profile of just over an inch high, it's great that they were able to fit that in. Overall, a machine with some impressive specs for its price point. Sure, you can get a better gaming machine, but it might cost you double. Intead, save your cash for your next machine in a couple years or other bills you might have ot pay.

Very feature rich, very capable, and a good value

Let me start by saying this gaming computer looks much better in person than it does in the stock photos. A gaming computer has to look cool as well as perform better than a home computer would. The look and feel of this, in person, makes you realize it is a well made performance machine. For starters, I downloaded a graphic rich and processor intense truck driving game. Absolutely no stalling, no blips, no pauses, nothing bad. It rolled through the game without even a hiccup. This was a good intro into seeing how well it was going to perform. Then I tried a Ghost Recon game, and had no problems at all. Graphics are great, performance is outstanding, and it just did what it was supposed to do, and it did it well. The 17" screen gives you real estate to play with and it comes in handy vs. squinting over using a smaller screen and missing details of the games you are playing. The graphics card and memory are sufficient and adequate for game play. You won't be disappointed with this amazing display. The backlit keyboard is very bright (can be dimmed if desired) and looks amazing in bright RED. Love it. There is no lit up logo on the lid, which I'm okay with, despite that normally being a calling card for gaming computers. I prefer a smooth and solid lid vs. a lit up soft spot on the lid. Just my preference for putting it in my computer bag. The power supply is a beast and weighs a lot compared to any other laptop power supply I've used before. Why? It gives you enough power to run the machine at full tilt while also charging the battery. The larger power brick will also be less prone to failure, because it doesn't have to work as hard as the lesser rated ones. Frankly for a laptop, for home computer users, gamers, or even as an excellent business laptop, the I5 processor, the 8GB of RAM, and the 512GB of SSD drive space will probably handle anything you can throw at it. I used it with AutoCAD and found it was able to handle the most intense floorpans I had on file quickly and without any hesitation or pauses. Large complex Excel spreadsheets were like child's play for this laptop. If there is one thing I can say I wish were better, it would be the battery life. In full gamer mode, it projects only 2 hours of battery life, with a high brightness on the screen and keyboard. The battery is rated for much more time, and depending upon what you are using it for, how bight you have the backlight and keyboard lights, will depend upon how long it really lasts. Watching youtube episodes of PBS shows, it lasted closer to 5 hours. That was with a reduced brightness on the screen and keyboard. I almost forgot, the important keys for gaming are highlighted. These are arrow keys, then also the W,A,S, and D. The NITRO button opens the fan speed and temperature monitoring screen so you can see how hot it is running and if you want, you can speed up the fans to cool it down more or quicker than it doing it by itself. Very cool to have this control. As for ports, it has HDMI, USB, and also a network jack. Thank you for that, while I'll probably mostly be on WIFI, there are times I like to be plugged into the network for even faster internet speed. This gives me that, built in! You could spend more on a more tricked out machine, yes. But if you want a decent gaming machine that can be expanded (up to 32GB of RAM and support for another HDD) this is worth a look. One big problem I have with laptops is the touchpad. This has a flawless touchpad. It is smooth and responsive. Not a single frustration using it, scrolling is smooth, and clicks are solid whether doing simple touch only or hard clicks. If you give this a try, I'm sure you'll be happy with it. If not, Best Buy has a decent return policy. I'm glad this machine is available without having to go to a more expensive machine. Acer has always provided decent computers and this is no exception.

This review is specific to the Acer - Nitro 5 17.3" Gaming Laptop with the Intel Core i5 processor (9th Gen), 8GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card, and 512GB PCI-e SSD. The first thing I noticed when opening the box was how cool and stylish this laptop is. The red and black color scheme is very appealing and makes the laptop look like a high-end gaming laptop. The keyboard is backlit and contains a number pad and full-sized directional arrow keys which in my opinion is a necessity when it comes to gaming laptops. The WASD keys are also accented making it easy to find them during gaming. Another thing I found to be really cool when first opening up the box was the protective sleeve that is included. It seems to be of very high quality with a decent amount of cushioning which will really help protect the laptop during transportation. When it comes to performance, this thing really rocks. The PCI-e SSD really makes a huge difference when it comes to boot-up and loading times while still providing a decent amount of storage space. If you need extra storage, an additional 2.5” hard drive can be added. The Intel i5 processor and GTX 1650 graphics card combination was an excellent choice and in my experience, results in flawless gaming at 1080p and 60fps. Battery life is pretty good considering this is a 17.3” panel although you should leave it plugged in while gaming whenever possible for the best possible quality. It should be noted that the charging port is located on the right side of the laptop but unlike many other laptops I have worked with, it is almost halfway down near the middle of the unit as opposed to the top where the rotating panel is attached. Although the plug doesn’t stick out very far when plugged in to the laptop, it is possible it might slightly interfere with your use of a mouse if you use your mouse on the right side and you have limited space. Otherwise, this likely won’t be an issue. The speakers are decent enough but if you plan on gaming, you will most likely be using a gaming headset anyways since we all know how important it is to be able to tell where a particular sound is coming from. The setup process was easy and straightforward. Part of the process was able to be completed with only my voice through the use of Cortana which was pretty cool. This same built-in microphone can be used for in-game chat but again, if you plan on gaming, you will probably be using a headset and won’t need to use the built-in microphone but it is still a nice feature to have. Once it booted up into Windows, I noticed some of the typical bloatware that comes preinstalled on new systems but this is to be expected and was easily dealt with by uninstalling the unneeded items. Overall, this is a great mid-range gaming laptop that should be able to handle just about anything you throw at it and I highly recommend it!

The laptop came packaged nicely and did not have too much waste. The unit and keyboard were protected by dense styrofoam packaging and cloth. The laptop itself has a nice large screen that enables full HD. This is not a high end gaming laptop but a decent one especially for the price range. I run StarCraft 2 at medium-high settings and the game runs smoothly and I experience no lag on this machine. The Nitro Sense feature is nice to have in order to monitor the status of the laptop and also control the cooling fan speeds. The light up keyboard is a nice aesthetic even though you cannot change the color. The laptop itself is made of a lot of plastic and feels "cheap" but it seems sturdy so far. For the price point, this is a good deal for those that do not want to spend upwards of $1000 plus for a gaming laptop.

This thing is AWESOME! The bezel is much thinner than the previous generation Acer Nitro, and the included "Nitro" button is a great add on. The laptop features a 144hz screen "LCD Overdrive" which allows the screen to refresh at a faster rate. This consistently offered a much smoother gaming experience with the various games I tested on the laptop. The inclusion of a keyboard backlight override is nice, if you don't want the backlight to turn off after 30 seconds. This version of the Nitro also includes a USB C port for your newer accessories (like a phone charger); the rest are standard USB 3 ports. While the unit does allow for expansion with a Hard Drive and Memory, it's not as easy to upgrade as the previous generation Nitro's. The entire bottom plate must be removed to access the extra drive bay, and the included ribbon cable feels a bit delicate. However, if you're comfortable upgraded PC's, this should be pretty easy. Just make sure you put the ribbon cable in the appropriate way, or you'll need to take the bottom off again to swap it around. I was pleasantly surprised to see this had an extra M.2 SSD slot. I went ahead an installed a spared 256 GB M2 SSD, and a seagate 1TB drive in the spare HDD slot. Both were identified quickly by the PC upon start up, and are now used for all the extra app installs. You'll also find one additional slot for RAM, with only one 8 GB stick installed. The speakers are fairly standard for any laptop. You'll notice it a bit quieter if it's not sitting on a solid surface, like a desk, but provides sufficient sound in a quiet environment. Where this laptop really shines is the gaming. This is considered an entry level machine, but really boasts pretty impressive visuals on older games; with most running at max settings. I play a lot of Star Trek Online, and other casual games that aren't as intense as some of the newer FPS' available, and all of them run at max graphics settings with the Nvidia dedicated graphics. Just make sure to install the GeForce Experience app to get the latest drivers. There wasn't a ton of bloatware on the PC; which is a nice change. The only thing I had to uninstall was the Norton software. I replaced it with an existing anti-virus that still had another license. Overall, I'm extremely impressed with this laptop, and haven't powered up my other laptop since I received this one. It's really worth the price!

This laptop is perfect for the price. It will run most AAA games at a high to ultra setting staying between 50-70fps. My only thing is it does get a little warm, but nothing concerning. just enable the cool-boost with high fan setting. And if that isn't enough, undervolting. the CPU is another good option. You'll be good. Other than that, its a great laptop!

So, when one sees a “Gaming Laptop” you automatically think PC gaming, and that is what it is marketed as. But for me, I looked at the components. Specifically, the fact that it has SSD vice HHD. This makes it much faster and allows the computer to multitask better. If you think about it, gaming computers typically are faster and the graphics tend to be better. With the supped-up hardware and software, why would you not want to have something like that for school or work? The computer is sleek and attractive. The red/black combo looks really cool and it is fairly large. Typically with a larger laptop, they add the 10-key pad on the side. That is what they did with this as well. The keys are responsive and comfortable, and the keyboard has back lighting (red to match the overall theme). The 17 inch display is very large and the resolution is magnificent. Like everything else right now, it comes with windows 10. There is a 500 GB SSD, coupled with 8 GB of RAM. It says you can expand the RAM to 32 GB. It has the i5 9300H processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 graphics card. There is no DVD/CD drive which is the way things are going now. It is really not needed anyway. I can quote all the stats, but the reality is the value for your dollar is great with this laptop. It will work great for school, and if you don’t like this size it comes in smaller sizes. The battery lasts for a super long time and it responds instantly. My only complaint is that the speakers could be louder. I plan on adding some, but as a stand alone station I would have liked it to have stronger speakers. Again, this is a small point and when you look at all you are getting in the total package it is a very impressive computer. I recommend this computer to anyone that wants a good laptop. Whether it is for school, work or gaming, you will be happy with this Acer laptop.
