Decent product-Doesn’t beat the rest
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I’ve used this in hopes of boosting my local channels since i cut the cable cord and I was not picking up all the local channels with just the mohu leaf antenna I used. Unfortunately this is not much better than a roku stick, and doesn’t offer much benefit. It was easy to hook up. Comes with an hdmi cable and a usb extender cable. Once you get everything hooked up it has to run a few updates which takes about 10 minutes. Be warned this runs on google android, which in my opinion stinks, and requires you to have a google account, or create one on the spot. The remote with this synced up with my tv and controls the volume just fine, but for some reason when I push the power button on the remote, it loads up the tv app menu and sometimes forces my screen to become glitchy and fuzzy which I then have to reset and pull the power plug on the airtv unit box. Another negative to me is I cant seem to figure out how to add any more apps then the standard loaded sling tv, youtube and google. Seems kind of clunky. The one positive to this, is that it does integrate your local channels directly into slingtv interface, so when you are browsing the sling channels, you can easily switch to your antenna channels as well. It did not give me any extra channels tho which was unfortunate but expected. At this time I cannot recommend this product over a standard roku stick.

Best OTA and Streaming Combo for Sling Users
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setting up AirTV was not complicated but there was some confusion. When I turned it on, it automatically updated Android but as it did that, it did not allow me to pair up the remote. I had to go to the http://airtv.net/help on my computer to figure out how to pair it. All I had to do was to press the power button on the AirTV device for 3 seconds. The remote paired up and automatically updated its firmware, which was something new to me. I had never seen a non-Logitech remote update its firmware. A quick setup guide would have saved me the hassle but it was very simple once I learned how. I did have some issues with the remote. The right and left keys sometimes became irresponsive on some screens. Going back to home (Sling button) and then back to the app such as Netflix usually restored its normal functionality. It happened many times, which means it is a real issue and a firmware update is needed. Still, the remote recognized my TV, including its brand and video/audio receiver and was able to control both. The only remote I’ve ever used that can really control sound and TV seamlessly. The find remote feature is a very nice touch. Setting up Netflix was amazingly easy. It automatically downloaded information from Google and I did not have to use a code or log in to my account. AirTV supports Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5Ghz) and Ethernet. Image quality was excellent. No lags in voice or video. There are 3 dedicated app buttons: Netflix, Sling which is also the "home" button, and Google. It supports voice but it failed more than I would expect. In my experience, it has the best integration for off the air (OTA) and streaming TV on the market. OTA channel guide is very well integrated with the Sling TV. If you are a Sling subscriber and live in area where local TV streaming is not supported, you will be extremely satisfied with this device. Even if you just want to use the OTA TV feature, it is still a good option. They promise that with a soon-to-be-released update, you will be able to use it as a DVR with your own storage. If so, it will be difficult to find something better at a comparable price. I'm looking forward to that feature. I would give it 5 stars if the issues with the remote and voice recognition were fixed. I almost gave it 3 stars because of that. The problem seems to be with the AirTV box, not necessarily the remote. For now, I’m giving it 4 stars and I recommend this device if you are or intend to be a Sling subscriber. It comes with a 2-month+ subscription credit.

An okay choice for cord-cutters with Sling TV
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.(Please note that I received a review unit in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.) TL;DR review - The AirTV Player is an interesting choice when it comes to cutting the cord. Unlike every other device on the market, it doesn't have to be completely dependent on the internet to provide you with live entertainment choices, as it can directly receive OTA broadcasts. The hardware performs well, all things considered. However, the lack of RAM and storage, no DVR capability with broadcast TV, along with the lack of compatible apps in Google Play that are available on competing Android TV devices limit the appeal of this device at this time. Full Review: The AirTV Player by isn't the first Android TV device I've owned, but it's certainly the most promising to what the platform is capable of when it comes to being a media streamer. It's a very capable playback device, with 4k video output (likely HDR capable after an update). It supports a wide range of apps from the Google Play store, from additional video sources beyond what's included to games and a wide range of things in-between. It also does something no set-top box - and a growing number of TV sets - don't do - it functions as an over-the-air TV tuner, with or without a subscription to Sling's TV service. First, the hardware. Inside the package, you'll find the AirTV Player, the remote, the AC adapter, the USB TV tuner, and a short USB extension cable (which you'll need). You'll also find a credit for $50 toward Sling TV service and instruction manual. Everything is packaged well and, other than a sticker that feels out of place, it has an Apple-like experience to opening the packaging. Some of you may not like the aesthetic of the AirTV - white with light-blue trim and a dimly-glowing orangish light to indicate that it's powered on, I get that. Personally, I'm not a fan and would love to see it in black with a user-selectable color for the LED indicator. On the backside of the box, you'll find power, ethernet, 2 USB ports, HDMI, and optical audio output, the last of which is something that most competitors in the streaming media player space now lack and can be useful for those who either want to use this box as a target for audio playback (Chromecast, Pandora, Spotify, and others are supported either natively or with apps) or that have older home theater setups with receivers that lack HDMI and/or TVs that can't pass through Dolby Digital audio. One thing it's sorely lacking, and I'll get into that later, is a SD card slot; it could also benefit from additional USB ports. I also would like to see the power supply built into this device instead of the choice they went with (which can block outlets on some surge strips). I'm also not a fan of the remote - white it's width and soft, rubbery texture feels good in my hand, the off-center buttons that control the device with a column on the left side for power/standby, volume, mute, and a button marked with a diamond that sends you to Android TV's home screen (not a very intuitive design choice, btw) is something that takes a bit to learn and get used to. It does have one feature that every remote with RF or Bluetooth connectivity should have, however - a remote finder function. In terms of performance, The AirTV gets it in spite of its limitations - it's snappy through through the menu system, boots quickly, loads apps quickly, and doesn't seem to have too many problems streaming media (I tested using Netflix, Crackle, YouTube, and the Chromecast Receiver feature with 2.4GHz wireless N, 5GHz wireless AC, and a wired connection, and all performed very well). The box also has HDMI and two USB ports, one of which you'll lose to the USB-connected TV tuner (which happens to be manufacturer by Hauppauge - probably the best decision made with this entire hardware package). The best part of having a TV tuner that isn't integrated into the AirTV directly will become apparent when ATSC 3.0 starts hitting the airwaves; if Sling TV allows it, you'll be able to upgrade the tuner that comes with this box with a 4k-capable TV tuner as the next switchover occurs. The limitations of the hardware are silly, however, especially for the price of this device - 1GB of RAM, a Cortex A53-based processor at 1.2GHz, and 8GB of internal storage (of which you only get 5GB as user storage). These stats would have been justifiable for the price two years ago, but even with the TV tuner included, this device is now more expensive than it should be. Second, the software. I'm going to give you the perspective of someone who isn't interested in SlingTV, because I'm really not interested in the service. I will say though, that the AirTV Player is HEAVILY SLANTED towards subscribers of Sling TV's service; you could say it's the set-top box they've been waiting for. You can bypass the Sling app, but you'll have to disable it to do so as I haven't found any root exploits for this device yet that would allow you to change what it starts up with. (Maybe an option of starting in Leanback or Sling would be nice.) Sling TV's software handles the TV tuner with the sort of ease that you'd expect it to. As you go through the channels, you'll find that it tunes as quickly as any TV set or digital TV tuner does. It also makes it easy to change through sub-channels; where TV sets and many digital TV tuners require that you punch in which subchannel you want (41.1, 41.2, etc) or they default to the now-defunct analog channel, you just highlight the channel you want and click the OK button. What's very surprising, however, is the lack of DVR functionality - recording, time-shifting (play/pause), and things of that nature. I would happily add an external hard drive to this box in order to pause live TV and make recordings, and if Sling offered upgraded tuners (2 or 4 channel) or compatibility to other USB and network tuners already on the market (Hauppauge and Silicone Dust units among others) along with room-to-room communication for these boxes to share DVR recordings (and possibly allow them to sync to devices or stream OTA away from home) they would have a real alternative to competing services like DirecTV's Genie, Comcast's X1, and other multi-room DVR services that cost far more for the monthly fee. Android TV proves itself to be great once again in my eyes. Though a Nougat update has been promised, this box shipped with Marshmallow. While it doesn't feel as snappy overall as Nougat on my Sony XBR850C, it's still fairly quick and easy to use. Bluetooth pairing is straight-forward and supports most standard Bluetooth devices. I'll add a reply to this review when Nougat finally hits. The disappointing things are the apps that work with my Sony TV but don't work with the AirTV Player, the biggest one being Amazon Video. Also, the aforementioned lack of USB ports and storage options isn't great, especially since the 8GB of built-in storage can be filled very quickly with apps and games (which many of you will undoubtedly add to this box). The current lack of HDR video output is also disappointing; after doing some research, this is a hardware limitation. The Play Store software issues will sort themselves out as more developers test and certify this device runs their apps. All in all, the AirTV player, for me, is a start toward something good. However, it's needing a hardware refresh at this point because for what you're getting, you're paying too much for the hardware. I can only recommend this to friends that use Sling TV service. If you want Android TV as your smart TV platform, either go with a Sony TV set or there is a competing Android TV box from another manufacturer with similar performance and half the cost.

Great Starter Kit for Cable Cutters
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So you're tired of the high prices of television, but you want to be able to watch certain TV shows and sports programs, but you're not sure where to start. Well let me confirm that this is a fantastic place to start. I really feel that AirTV nailed their initial product to get started. It's not just that it has integration with your TV antenna, but that the whole ecosystem is pretty well developed and the product is solid overall. It starts with the Android TV Box. While it's not as full featured as some other Android TV boxes it does cover the basics and some extras. It's really nice that it is capable of 4K and gives it some future proof capability. The box itself is not particularly powerful and is clearly aimed at multimedia enthusiasts as opposed to Android TV enthusiasts. It won't replace your game console on any level. That being said streaming quality and wireless capability on this box is really reliable and it's even voice controlled. For streaming Netflix, Google Play Music, Youtube, and the included 50 dollars worth of Sling TV all streamed in good quality through the box, and was quite impressive. There are even dedicated buttons on the box as well. The box also includes being able to stream your TV antenna through the USB adapter that is included so you can get your local channels. My complaint with the device lies in that I would often get crashes within the apps when first opening them and would sometimes take multiple tries in order to open it which can be frustrated. Also access to the Google Play Store is....limited and you will certainly be missing certain apps. At the time of writing this review there was only one web browser and it was not a great one at that. You will need a keyboard to use it as well. Overall why it doesn't cover every single thing I think that there is a lot going right here.

Disappointing Set-Top contender in 2018...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This player has 2014 written all over it. 8GB storage with Android TV? The whole grab of Android TV vs. Roku or another "dumb" solution is the apps... This thing doesn't have storage, or official support for storage being added, so its worthless from an app perspective (beyond the few streaming apps, Netflix, Hulu, etc). Beyond storage, this thing has a really cool remote. I understand that AirTV is owned by Sling Media/Dish Network, so I understand the Sling tie-in, but its excessive and hacky and takes over the Android TV experience which is poor show in my book. This thing is BRAND NEW and is also Gimped with Android TV 6.0 (8.0 exists even on the old Nexus Player that this is so closely specced to from 4 years ago). This seems like a janky little device that's here to push Sling memberships as a loss leader and not much else. Tech note: The device does support 4K so if they were to update it to Android 8.1 or the dev community found a way into this bootloader, it would make a FINE, yet underpowered basic Android TV box, if it weren't for the rest of my gripes... This unit included the TV tuner, which I'd hoped would be at least a bright spot on the tarnish of SLING branding everywhere - You have to hack at the system to get it to work with Google's native guide, the Sling guide is useless unless you have SLING service and it integrates Live TV horribly - All of this kludge could have been avoided by using Android 8.0/8.1 and including an opt-out for Sling that didn't require STILL creating an account with SLING that will lead to solicitation and annoyance for years to come. The antenna adapter is IDENTICAL hardware to other tuners from Hauppage used on XBOX, etc but seems to perform horribly by comparison - I can't tell if this is due to the box its connected to, or if its similary gimped to put SLING in the only good light. I mentioned I liked the remote - what I HATE from this thing and the likes of ROKU and other for-sale companies is their insistence on putting branded buttons on remotes - Again just a sad shove for SLING on this box that someone's gonna pay for! And what happens when one of the services enbuttoned on this thing goes under or merges with another? I still chuckle when I see the RDIO button on my TV's Roku remote... Fickle as it seems this is poor poor product placement. Speaking of product placement, that's all this thing seems to be. Look for it "free" or for "$39.99" with a commit to Sling in the near future. That's where it will end up, and that my friends, is where it belongs.

Great little Box
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The AirTV is a wonder box with many features in one device! - the quality of the picture is AMAZING across all streaming services. But i would recommend hooking the box with Ethernet instead of wifi to get the best screen resolution and no lag. - it has built in Sling service and a dedicated button ( you need a Sling subscription to watch sling channels though) - built in the price is a $50 Sling credit which can account to 2 and a half month of basic service or 2 month of Blue service) - after hooking up my HD antenna, i was able to get all the channels I used to get with a better resolution! - the dedicated buttons (Sling, Netflix, and Google) are very good shortcuts to the content you love, in addition to a favorite button that can be customized to your needs. - the voice activated remote feature is really good, especially with Google. you won't get Alexa, Siri, or google assistant, but its very decent when you ask it for basic stuff. - the google store option is really good for content from games to apps, and AirTV is promising a new software update will bring more features. - The box supprts many streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, Google movies, Youtube TV, etc. I would recommend this box for anyone who wants to cut the cord and enjoy the streaming services. - Customer support is phenomenal. I had an issue with redeeming the $50 credit from ling and AirTV solved the issue within hours. I only took one star because the setup was a bit lengthy, and because it doesn't support DirecTV yet.

Easy setup, nice features
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The AirTV player was easy to set up with my 4K TV - it has everything you need to get connected to Sling TV and to a wide selection of apps and services. The Netflix button on the remote is a plus. One of the key features is its ability to get Over-The-Air (OTA) channel access using its OTA adapter and your antenna. This allowed a few dozen more channels, most of them in HD. The high quality of Sling TV on the AirTV Player was pretty evident. I'm currently using the free trial but it has impressed me enough to "cut the cord" on cable going forward. The remote itself feels a little less solid than I would have wished, and the buttons did not respond as precisely as hoped. Accuracy was spotty, since I would need several presses at times for it to function. But with the easy setup and seamless OTA and web channel integration, the AirTV Player is an easy recommendation. Full disclosure, I received this product for my honest, unbiased review.
