Trying to put a new spin and mess with a classic is hardly ever a good idea.

Tim Burton barely made an effort in this project, pure cash grab.

Proof that 2D film can make a good 3D movie.

I'm in the habit of reviewing 3D Blu-ray titles primarily on the merit of their 3D quality, especially when the title being reviewed is as well known as Alice in Wonderland. Insofar as the movie in general goes, I can only say: Tim Burton. Johnny Depp. Classic Lewis Carroll. Enough said... if you are buying this, you probably already know that you are going to like the movie in terms of story, acting, and production value. The 3D content, however, warrants further discussion. While the bulk of this movie is computer rendered animation which by default lends itself well to 3D, the human actors and real-world scenes were all shot using 2D cameras and converted to 3D post-production. This is an area where other movies currently available have pretty much failed... just read the reviews for Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender here on BestBuy.com if evidence is needed that most people are less than impressed with 2D-to-3D conversions. Alice in Wonderland, however, does not disappoint! The scenes at the beginning and end of this movie were shot in 2D and are mostly devoid of computer animation, yet contain a level of 3D depth that goes above and beyond its peers. It has been said that Burton filmed this movie with 3D in mind, and it shows. What "3D in mind" means exactly is anyone's guess, but it seems that great care and precision was taken in separating details as fine as a lock of hair from the background behind it. Scenes where actors and set pieces are plentiful are reminiscent of a diorama with obvious layers of depth. Not quite as impressive as native 3D, but significantly better than any other 2D conversion I've seen. The 3D fun really begins when Alice tumbles down the rabbit hole and takes her first steps into the vividly-colored and Burton-styled Wonderland. Jaws will drop. It is easy to forget how much of this movie is computer-rendered thanks to the seamless inclusion of live actors (at least the parts of them that aren't rendered), and that may also be part of why the 3D seems so effective when compared to other 2D conversions. Whatever the reason for its efficaciousness, the 3D in this movie is a joy to behold. Slowly but surely, the number of Blu-ray 3D movies worth buying is growing. This title will make a great addition to pretty much anyone's collection.

I previous purchased this movie before I purchased a 3D TV. So, when I did get my 3D TV in I just gave my old disc to a friend and purchased the 3D copy today. I read a lot of reviews and a lot of people said this was one of the best 3D movies. I just wish I would had read the review below me first. lol Anyway, yes the movie is 2D converted to 3D. Makes me wish I would had just kept my old copy of Alice and use the 2D to 3D converter on my TV and it would have came out about the same to save some money. I rate the 3D experience a 2 out of 5. The overall movie is great. If you are planning on purchasing this movie not because you want something to watch in 3D then I would go ahead and purchase the 3D copy because it comes with 4Disc and it cost about the same as the regular Blu-ray.

    A beautiful reimagination of Wonderland

It's certainly not Disney's version... but it's a LOT more loyal to Lewis Carroll's books. I was NOT a fan of Burton's version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... but this one was much better done. The only movie I've gone back to the theatre to see twice in many years, and I'll be waiting in line at midnight to get it. The girl they found to play Alice was amazing, and very believable in Alice's "return" to Wonderland. The environment was amazingly beautiful and detailed. The CGI characters (Cheshire Cat, Tweedle Dee & Dum, White Rabbit, Hare, etc) were beautiful and very enjoyable. And Helena Bonham Carter will forever change your mental image of what the Red Queen is supposed to be... her performance was the shining spot of the cast by far. Johnny Depp, however, disappointed me. He gave a decent performance... but it wasn't near what I was hoping for from him as the Mad Hatter, especially in comparison to the rest of the cast. But the environment truly must be seen in Blu-Ray to be enjoyed. I won't attest to special features until after purchase... but the movie is worth every penny I'll spend on it.

POOR DVD package, film better than expected

OK, I had my doubts about this film. I will STILL watch the 1951 Disney classic above this one. I had doubts when Pocahontas was released in 1995. Turned out to be a great film. This film is good NOT GREAT. I have never read the Lewis Carroll book, just know the 1951 film. Of course, we do NOT have songs in this 1. You can always listen to the songs in the 1951 film. Depp, he has done this type of role before, so this was no stretch for him. Carter, Burton's girlfriend so that is how she keeps getting these parts in his film, good as the Red Queen. The big head bit….with special effects the way the are today this effect should have been done better. Hathaway needs Disney to get hit films. OK job as the White Queen with no screen time till 2cd half of film. Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum were a let down compared to the 1951 film. All the animated characters NOT even close to the classic film. The ending was bit of a let down. NOW, I find myself having to say this with recent Disney DVD releases. A line on the back of this DVD case describing the film "The extraordinary characters you’ve loved come to life richer and MORE COLORFUL THAN EVER". OK, Disney, if you are prompting how the film looks then why are you guys resorting to PLAIN SILVER DVD'S LIKE WHEN DVD'S CAME OUT IN THE LATE 1990’S? No chapter search list or any information on film inside. Disney has gone CHEAP & I just hate this.

    Good Family 3D movie *****

I puchased a LG LED 55" inch 3D T.V with 3d blue ray player and also purchased LG sound bar with wireless woofer. I puchased because of the 3D and thought it would be nice for family. This is maybe my 8th 3D movie that I have purchased. Most of the marvel or action 3D blue rays are ok as far as some 3D. But I took a gamble after reading reviews on Alice and Wounderland. I was glued to the television as much as my wife and kids. Great colors and depth and some nice 3D pop outs, really liked the blue butterfly that flew out of the screen and into my livingroom. You can't go wrong if you purchase this, it will be a great investment!!!

Johnny Depp is going to be the #1 actor ever specially for children movies everyone loves him he is great i loved him in Edward Scissor hands boy this man is the best actor ever not to mention the others but Johnny just bypasses all of them and the movie was just great it was funny and exciting to watch unlike some this one we could not take our eyes of it and yes buy the movie if you want to watch it or rent it because if you wait for it to come out on cable or regular channels you will hate the fact when you have to run into those commercials yuck just when getting excited comes and commercial so kids and parents this is a must watch movie.

When I was a kid, I would watch the original Disney's Alice in Wonderland every chance I got! This new "real life" fantasy movie has captured the original animated version's story, changed a few things around and turned it into a modern day digital masterpiece. Excellent visual effects(especially the 3D version). I also think they couldn't have picked a better Mad Hatter than Johnny Depp. GREAT Movie

What can i say about this? It was a fantastic movie. some didnt like it but tim burton movies arent for everyone. I love his movies and this is the best way to make an alice in wonderland movie. It was really weird just like the original and i will definitely be buying this edition. It comes with a blu ray, dvd, and a digital copy. It seems to have good special features but why would that matter. the movie is great! its a defitnite must get!

The making of special features were outstanding. Quite interesting how real life actors and sets are seamlessly combined with CGI. Great surround sound and imagery were effective at transporting me into the fantasy. The only few brief detractors were panoramic scenes where the conversion from the 3D screen to 2D screen created a slight distortion.

A fanciful take on the classic Lewis Carroll tale. A wonderful journey of a young lady revisiting a dream world of a past reality in which the path of her fate leads her to rediscover her youthful ambitions characterized as her "muchness" to overcome all her indecision and strife. A wonderful tale whose theme is to inspire and reawaken our youthful desires of the past to carry us to successful conclusions.

I love Tim Burton as a director and I love Johnny Depp as an actor and this movie combines both of them in an excellent movie. The interpretation of the characters was terrific and very Burton-esque! and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter is one of his best characterizations. However, I don't think this movie is appropriate for young children. Some of the characters could be too scary. I believe the classic Disney animated version is a better introduction to the Alice in Wonderland story for little ones.

Great special effects, always moving, diction was perfect, actually understood what actors were saying. Good length, not sure blue ray is necessary colors were spectacular and it was worth watching 2 times in 1 week just to appreciate all details like Star Wars or older Bond movies. Tired theme like vampires that everyone has made a safe movie. Same talent could have gone to new bold venture and would be acclaimed. Great movie hidden behind old worn story. Not for young children.

Alice in Wonderland was actually pretty fun to watch. It looks great and the 3D is wonderful. I really bought this movie just to see how good the 3D was and planned on selling it afterwards. I ended up liking it enough that I'm going to keep it in my collection. For a 2D conversion, this is a great 3D movie. In fact, it's the best 3D exerience I've had, aside from Transformers 3.
