Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the high performance and impressive graphics capabilities of this 17.3" gaming laptop, praising its fast boot times and solid build quality. However, some customers note that the laptop's weight and heat generation are significant drawbacks, along with less-than-stellar battery life and noticeable fan noise during intensive use. The large screen size is a plus for many, but the bulkiness impacts portability.

I ordered this laptop for my job. Although I'm not a gamer, I wanted a laptop with 17" screen, good processing power, and higher-end graphics card as I do some video editing and tend to multitask. Unfortunately, when I took it out of the box, it couldn't boot up at all and kept in an endless loop of saying it needed to be updated to correct error (but could never complete that task). I had purchased Geek Squad, so called to ask what I could do. They explained that "these laptops sometimes have defective hard drives, so you need to bring it in to replace it". However, when I brought into the store, customer support suggested I first talk to floor staff to see if maybe there was an equivalently priced item on the floorI could get instead of of having to order a replacement for this one. However, the floor staff warned "Just so you know, this isn't a good line. You would be better off with another brand." That kind of ticked me off as the floor staff at the Best Buy where I had ordered that one assured me it was a good purchase. ... I decided to just get my money back and return it. So wouldn't recommend it based on the "out-of-the-book dead-on-arrival" state mine was in.

    Poor Laptop, Worse customer service!

I bough this in the summer of 2018 expecting a great pc especially after hearing all the alienware hype and the price. It was no so. 1. The thermal throttling on this machine is horrible. Anything that stresses both the CPU & GPU at mediately causes the CPU to hit 99c throttle back from 3.9 to 2.9 Ghz and tank performance in games. 2. the included M.2 ssd failed after 1 year forcing me to spend $140 on a decent Samsung to replace it. At first I contacted dell, they where pretty useless saying to send it out and have them look at it. Researching on line found the problem is there poor heatsink design its very uneven and has very low mounting pressure. So I fixed it myself. I had to spends hour of time and hundreds of dollars trying cooling pads, external fans, and even decided to put new thermal paste on it. Which helps but not enough. The only thing did sort of worked is when I used 0.5 mm copper shims in between the die and heatsink to even out the heat spread and aid in thermal transfer. In the spring of 2020 I contacted dell again wanting to order a new heatsink. They wanted me to pay them $25 to talk to customer service. After this I was fed up and in July of 2020 I bough an HP Omen 17 to replace this thing. It was worth it and in total the HP was $13 less than this alienware.

      Jackie,

Thanks for your feedback. We're glad to hear that you're happy with your new computer. If you'd like to reach out to our Alienware Support Team for any advice you can Email them here - [email protected]. Please use your username from this review as the subject for your Email.

If you'd like the fan to run quieter for you we'd recommend the following:

Update the BIOS: An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer. You can also follow up with our Technical Support Team here - 1-800-624-9896.

Right out of the box there was a problem with the WiFi not connecting, then dropping on and off. Searching online I found it to be a common problem. There are a number of things to try to fix it, different things worked for different people. Personally for me, any computer at this point shouldn’t need fixing right out of box. I did reach out to Dell support and he told me to return it, didn’t bother to try to help, so it went back. I bought another brand. Won’t buy an Alienware/dell based on the poor customer service added to the problem. Do your research about the WiFi card before purchasing!

      SnakeShake,

We're sorry to hear that your computer overheated on you. Here are some tips to keep your computer operating cooler:

      Tips for Proper Usage:

      1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
      2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
      3. It is recommended to use the portable system in a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
      4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
      5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
      6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

    Great Laptop for a gamer!

I have been gaming for as many years as I can remember, but it has always been on a desktop. I have had nice laptops, mostly for work, and I have tried gaming on those, but there was always something off about it. I figured, I was just not the laptop gamer type. So for years, I have not used a laptop to game, that is until I was bought this laptop as a gift, and boy was I completely wrong. I have begun gaming again, and now I am MOBILE! Well, almost:) This laptop weighs a ton. But surprisingly I am good with that. I do wish however that I had bought the laptop case for it, I thought my others would work, but nope (I have like 5 cases, all too small. LOL) But I can deal with that till I get one. Long story short, if you game, this is a GREAT buy. I have never been as happy with a laptop as I am with this. I would recommend this to everyone looking for a great laptop. The build quality is great, the options are killer, and lets face it, it is the best in the price range.

I owned the previous AW17R4 and there was issues with the thermal pasting which lead to common overheating and EXTREMELY loud fans. The newer 17R5 has completely fixed that problem and I've had no issues with overheating. Laptop has performed great - current pricing is more than fair (compared to previous / other models of its class), as it includes GSYNC and the additional 256GB SSD rather than a base of 128. If you're on the fence because of your experience with the previous generation's overheating (which was really the only problem I encountered), I can assure you that is no longer an issue!

I purchased and returned two of these Alienware 17r5 laptops no more than two weeks apart due to screen malfunctions. The first, I returned in less than 30 days due to a dead pixel. I exchanged that Alienware 17r5 for another. Two weeks later the screen went out. Best Buy & employees @ the Huntington, WV location were nothing but helpful in my exchange for a new desktop, helping me find a more powerful / better performing PC for the same amount I had spent on the Alienware 17r5.

I research and research to the point of paralysis by analysis. After weighing all options, I finally picked up one of these bad boys and so glad I chose to do so. Here are the just straight up facts. 1) It's heavy and big, but it's built like a tank, so that tradeoff is worth it imo. Sturdy and reliable build wins out in my book. 2) This is definitively a 60hz 1080p IPS panel with G-sync. Can confirm because it's literally stated on the packaging of the product. 3) Versatile in that you can get the graphics amp and keep your graphics card updated with more and more demanding games in the present and the future. Also can alleviate potential overheating issues from the unit when utilizing the graphics amp. Very good way to relatively future proof and extend the viable life of the laptop. * I'm very happy with the purchase and I believe you will be too if you are looking for the same things as I did (stated above) when determining which laptop is right for you. Hopefully this helps and enjoy!
