Customers value the high performance and impressive graphics capabilities of this 17.3" gaming laptop, frequently praising its large screen size and solid build quality. However, some users experienced issues with heat generation, battery life, and fan noise, while others found the refresh rate and touchpad less than ideal. Overall i really enjoy the system, it is fast, fluid, offers great visuals and solid audio experience. The build quality is excellent and the placement of the ports is well thought out. Had returned two other laptops after a week of home use prior to getting this one. For the size, the laptop is highly portable and easy to transport. The only downside as with all gaming pc's is the battery life. Would highly recommend if battery life isn't a concern and you have easy access to power. Would definately buy it again.

I replaced my Alienware 17R4 with the newer thins version. This is now a gaming powerhouse that will easily fit into any backpack. While not light, it won't break your back. Plays all modern AAA titles at high settings, 60+ fps. It does run a little hot, so needs some tweaking out of the box, but after that runs like a dream.

Why pay $2,500 for a Mac computer, with a small screen and less memory? When you can get a 17.3 screen, 512SSD + 1TB+8Hybrid Hard drive for $2,000. This Computer was purchased for Serato DJ Pro, it has not froze or crashed yet, handles multi tasking with ease. This computer is very efficient.

As previous reviews have mentioned the fans a noticeably loud. That said I don’t find it to be an issue but when gaming be prepared for a bit of extra white noise. The keyboard layout is well done but I do sometimes accidentally bump they track pad during gaming on the keyboard. The overall build is very nice and looks good without being gimicky. I would use it for work and it wouldn’t look too much like a pure gaming design. The sound is good, reasonably loud when needed. It is just laptop speakers so I don’t have too high of expectations. After upgrading from me 5-6 year old laptop this is a very nice machine. Decent value for the money. It is very good, but just shy of perfect, hence 4 stars.

Honestly, I think you are getting a pretty good deal if you buy this laptop on sale. I was able to snag it as an open box item and it had all the parts included. Spectacular deal for what you are getting. It will run your games smoothly and it will do just about anything else you need for the average gamer. As a new PC gamer, I cannot say whether or not this is a good gaming laptop for a "pro", but it does great for a casual like myself. The 60hz refresh rate was the only downside that I could find. I would've loved to have seen that at 144hz.

Great 17” gaming laptop. A lot smaller and lighter than my 3 year old Asus 17” gaming laptop. Almost no bloatware. Fans can get loud and may get too warm to actually use on your lap for long periods. I have not had a problem though.

      Hello TomM,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear about the fan nouise and temperatures that you're experiencing. I really love this laptop. It looks cool and it is super fast. I wish it had more powerful Intel Core, but the i7 works well. The graphics are great on this monitor and when you hook it up to a larger monitor that has a high refresh rate, you can't go wrong. Just wish it was touch screen for some of the basic things I also do with it like email and surfing the internet. It has great combination of high memory and a powerful graphics card. It is on the more expensive side, but that is Alienware. Well built and worth the money. Wait for this to go on sale like I did and you can't go wrong.

How could I say no. The Item was a open box originally $2300 got it for $1649. I couldn't say no. However after rundown on the specs in computer noticed the 1TB Hard drive was missing as it was labeled to have it.  I plan to bring it to Best Buy Geek Sqad's attention to see how their customer service handles this.  Overall I'm very pleased with the purchase.  One thing I notice so far is fan does give off a fine tune whistling sound. It's bearable however very noticeable.  I expected this however wounder how loud it'll get once playing top games like Shadow of Tomb Raider.  Keep posted will let you know.

Ok so have only had the laptop for not quite a month but it has been a great rig so far. I bought it as an open box when the model was on sale so I got a killer deal and it is just like new. The Alienware software update and setup was a little challenge but went pretty well. So far no complaints. The build quality feels great, it has great specs and runs great. It has been fun to play with the illumination on the unit with the software but well now settled into my favorite glow so cool. With Steam it is a nice solid rig for gaming and just runs smooth for pretty much any application I need so no complaints.

Ive been wanting a gaming laptop for awhile. Looking to get back into the whole steam setup Been with my Macbook i bought from 2012 and wanted a fresh upgrade. Was told this was worth the money, albeit with it being a name brand, why its so expensive But it's worth every bang for its buck. Fast when exploring the internet. Played Portal and Halo on this sucker with fluid ease. Love that its a large screen, Only minor drawback is that oil from fingers graze the keyboard and stays and the whole mousepad set up, but i use an external mouse regardless. Want something worth the money, this be it.

The hardest part of the setup on this computer was opening the box. The system holds your hand throughout the install process and made it a cinch to transfer the data from my old computer. I am not a game player but I purchased an Alien Brand because of its incredible performance and solid reliability. I would recommend this computer to anyone that, like me hangs on to PC's for 7 years or more and doesn't want it to become obsolete. No touch screen, no detachable keyboard just lightning speed and the ability to run anything you throw at it with ease.

Love it so far. But buyer beware. It heats up too much to rest on your lap. Definitely get a tray for this is you’re not sitting at a desk. Actually I’d be sure to have something under it anyway. Undervolting the cpu helped a bit and I hear repasting is quite helpful in mitigating the heat. The laptop itself is very thin and light for its size and class. I’m sure this is a trade off for the heat issues. Frame rates are exceptional and the sound is great.

This is the fastest gaming computer my kid has ever had! OK so this is only her first one but its an "Alienware" and we got it at a very good Open Box price. I have no idea how they part the heavens and earth and solve the world hunger problem and additionally provide peace amongst all the world's inhabitants... and BTW it doesn't quite do any of that but it's a Beast and worth the money! Everything I could need in a gaming desktop...in a laptop. Was looking at a new 2019 razer blade pro but happened upon this on a great sale and couldn't pass it up. Top of the line with just an 8th gen i7 vs 9th gen which is just an iterative upgrade, wireless ac instead of 6, and qhd vs 4k screen; just a couple of things that we cant even take fully advantage of yet anyways. Speed/performance is amazing and its a beautiful machine. Couldn't be happier.

Bought this laptop roughly three weeks ago, it is a nice design and everything but my touchpad does not register and during gaming sessions, FF14 and Destiny 2, when things really ramp up the screen goes black and pauses my gameplay then reverts back. It has gotten so bad that I plan to return it as Dell/Alienware customer support is useless. It also runs really hot, GPU 2070 does that, but it is way to loud to play anything without a headset or stereo speakers attached. Pros: Build quality is nice and a snappy laptop. Cons: Pricey when there are better compeititors out there that are cheaper with some better options. Loud fans during 90% of gaming sessions whether intense gameplay or just in menus. I would recommend looking for a laptop around $1800, most models with a 2070 GPU have similar stats to this Alienware model that is $2600.

      bandgeek44,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear about the issues that you've had so far. If you'd like to re-calibrate your computer's touchpad you can follow these steps:

Some Notebooks and Tablets with Keyboards have added gesture features to the touchpad hardware and drivers. A few of these features are two or three finger scrolling, pinch zoom, circle zoom, rotate and swiping. These new features may be the reason for the erratic cursor movement since most are turned on by default. You can disable or modify the way the features work in the touchpad driver properties. Here are some tips to modify these settings:

      1. In the Search box, type main.cpl.
      2. Touch or click main.cpl in the list of programs.
      3. Touch or click the Dell Touchpad tab.
      4. Touch or click on the picture of the touchpad.
      5. Touch or click Gestures (depending on your computer there may not be a Gestures option).
      6. Change the options as preferred.
      7. Touch or click Save.
      8. Touch or click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Dell Touchpad Utility.
      9. Touch or click OK on the Mouse Properties window.
      10. If the touchpad still does not work after following the preceding steps, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article - http://dell.to/2iaiujA.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2tqmS02.

We'd also recommend that you look into updating your computer's BIOS to see if it will help with the fan noise that you're experiencing: Update the BIOS: An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer. You can also follow up with our Technical Support Team here - 1-800-624-9896.

The new HOT Alienware m17 is here!

The Alienware m17 is a great PC that has some very impressive features. Unfortunately, it also has some very disappointing points. AESTHETICS -Very thin (18mm). -Slick-looking while folded and slim profile. It feels nice to hold. -Dark silver top with black matte accents can look like a gamer’s laptop, yet serious enough to take to a business meeting. -The small, traditional alien logo is not extravagant. -The screen bezel is thicker than many similar builds, but not distracting. -RGB keyboard and Alienware logo but they are not fully addressable. • BUILD QUALITY -Not as heavy as previous models (6.7lbs) which makes it easier to carry around. -Hinges are strong -top stays up and/or closed. -The dashboard features a matte finish that can attract some smudges easily. -Screen’s bezel is glossy black which could be easily scratched. -The keyboard and dashboard (chassis) do not bend easily under pressure. -Keyboard has good travel feel, despite being only 1.4mm. Great for typing but does not give enough tactile feedback when gaming. Also, it takes a bit to get used to the layout -especially the smallish enter, home, end and delete keys. -The touchpad feels nice and, having windows precision drivers, is very responsive. However, I wouldn’t play most games without an actual mouse. Also, it shows fingerprints very clearly. -Sound is decent and loud, being that these are laptop speakers, I would rather use a headset or desktop speakers. -The battery is as expected, only lasts for 2-3 hours doing productive work on battery boost mode. Less than 1 hour playing games on medium-low. -The laptop features a good, large 1080p display which is bright enough at 300 nits with a good color range. However, it is only 60hz, which is one of the biggest letdowns because of the laptop’s specs. It also does not feature g-sync. -PC can get extremely hot. At idle, it hovered around the mid 40°C’s. During normal use, it went up to lower 50°C’s and during benchmarks (3DMarks) it got up to a whopping 98-101°C! Surprisingly, the PC did not throttle until the late 90°C’s. This is all at ambient 20°C room temps. I started to worry about the table’s surface! Luckily, the wrist area was not affected by these temps. o The fans can get very loud -especially while gaming. I settled on “cool” settings. Although this is usually an issue that all laptops share. -Features several 3.1 USB ports, display ports, and Ethernet connectivity. Sadly, no flash card slots. • PERFORMANCE -Boot-ups and applications are quite fast with the SSD and has decent space for games and general storage. -Alien Command Center software provides many options for dealing with apps, games, settings (including overclocking) and monitoring. -I conducted several synthetic benchmarks and I am pleased to have very good results come back. On 3Dmark and Unigine, most tests came back well above average (for a laptop). I had great framerates on max settings on new games such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Battlefield 5, Anthem, and Resident Evil 2 (new). I also played multiplayer as well with no issues. I also tested the ray-tracing and DLSS features of the RTX 2070 GPU and it was decent (although I prefer not using them). Unfortunately, this was all disappointing since the display is only 60Hz… and it is better to play with v-synch to avoid tearing and flickering. • FINAL VERDICT -In the end, I am enjoying this laptop very much, especially for work. The specs, weight, build and looks are very attractive. However, all the shortcomings - extreme temperatures, key travel and placement, and the ludicrous 60Hz panel, combined with such a high price, can make it a tough sell, especially if you are specifically looking for a portable gaming rig.

Great gaming laptop, hampered by 60hz display

This is a great laptop overall, but this really should have been released as at least a 144hz screen for the asking price. My previous laptop, also an Alienware 13R with OLED screen, has much better resolution, and obviously much better black levels by far and viewing angles. This screen is only 1920x1080, which would be ok, but includes a fairly powerful RTX 2070 Max-Q mobile processor, capable of way over 60 frames per second at the laptop resolution for most games. So if you game off the actual laptop screen, you will see screen tearing, as the display only runs at 60hz (60hz, basically means it can only display about 60 frames per second). This really isn’t all that bad, as just about all games have a function called “V-Sync” and it will bascially cap your video card from passing 60fps, and keep away that screen tearing. I understand they were trying to keep the price down on this laptop offering, but this is really a shame, as there are other manufacturers of exact same CPU, and GPU configurations that do have higher refresh rate monitors, and at least one of them, at a higher resolution to boot.
