Customers are saying

Customers value the high performance and impressive graphics capabilities of this 17.3" gaming laptop, frequently praising its large screen size and solid build quality. However, some users experienced issues with heat generation, battery life, and fan noise, while others found the refresh rate and touchpad less than ideal. Despite these drawbacks, many appreciate the laptop's speed and storage capacity, along with its competitive price point.

It seems like a decent performer, but inspecting of the running temps showed it runs very hot. Sitting at 100c way too often for my comfort level. Returned it and got an different laptop with similar specs. That one barely reaches 90c.

      Matchoo,

Thanks for your review. We're sorry to hear that your computer was operating warmer than you expected it to. The temperature of your computer can be controlled by using the Alienware Control Center. By adjusting the settings in the Alienware Control Center your computer could have run at a more comfortable temperature for you. We're sorry to hear that you ended up returning this computer but we do hope that you give Dell another chance in the future.

Games look beautiful - great rig for the casual gamer. Unfortunately, it didn't quite max out the settings on Division 2. Would see 40-50FPS on ultra settings. Thought it might be a little better for the price. I play a bunch of older games and they look awesome.

Latest Alienware gaming computer plays latest video games with no latency issues. More compact than previous Top line Alienware computers makes this more portable. Does everything a normal laptop does and it plays the latest video games.

Love this laptop! Not too heavy. Not too loud. Doesn't get very hot but plays the games I like on ultra settings with no problem and at least 60fps. Plenty of ports to do what you want. I couldn't be happier with this premium laptop!

My boyfriend has always wanted an Alienware. I purchased it during October when Best Buy had promotions for their members with a great financing offer. The specs are amazing and he absolutely adores it. I’m a lifelong Mac user and was definitely impressed with all of the functions.

Bottom Line: * Skip this one, go with something else. Between the weight, heat, form factor, and inconvenience with Dell it's not worth the money. Best Buy is great, but don't buy Dell products from them or any other retailer. The laptop is OK for the price, but if you buy open box you will not be able to register it with Dell under any circumstances. They do not honor open box purchases from Best Buy. This is a Dell issue, not a Best Buy one. Pros: * This laptop will run modern titles on ultra high settings. Cons: * Weight: It's extremely heavy for a laptop. * Heat: It runs hot. As in, burn-your-fingers hot if it's not on a cooling pad. * Form: It's meant to be on a desk, on a cooling pad. Forget using a lap desk or being mobile. * Hardware: This is a slightly outdated model using older hardware, get the updated model if you're dedicated to Alienware. * BUYER CAUTION: If you buy any Dell product from ANY retailer that has been previously purchased, registered with Dell, and returned to the store - You WILL NOT be able to register it under your name with Dell. As far as they are concerned, they cannot verify ownership and the device does not belong to you. Spend your money on another brand.

      Jason,

We're sorry to hear about the experiences that you've had with your Dell laptop so far. If you'd like some suggestions about how to keep your laptop operating at a cooler temperature, we'd recommend the following:

      Tips for Proper Usage:

      1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
      2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
      3. It is recommended to use the portable system in a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
      4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
      5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
      6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

I tried this notebook because I wanted to give the RTX 2070 a try. First the good is the form factor. It has the 17 inch screen that looks nice and its a thin computer. The bad- No where in the description does it say it is a 2070 MaxQ which is lower power version of the normal 2070 on some other laptops. I was running Assassins Creed Odyssey on max everything. It looked pretty but I was getting screen tearing. I wonder if it is because it is a 60hz screen not a 144hz screen. Anyway for the price I dont think its worth getting a MaxQ so I exchanged this for Auros with full RTX 2070 and 144hz screen for a $100 less but it is a 15.6 inch screen

Once I got everything updated online I had no problems with my computer. Was overheating at first but after updating the heating problem went away. Would advise anyone getting this type of computer to get a cooling pad.

      TrekkeeLover,

We're happy to hear that your computer is working so well for you so far. If you experience issues with the computer getting hot on you again we'd recommend adjusting the settings in the Alienware Control Center:

      • To tune your system, go to Alienware Command Center and select out of 4 different thermal profiles that will help you manage system temperatures as well as performance output to your preference. These include Cool, Quiet, Balanced, and Performance thermal profiles.

      • Our Alienware also m17 follows 8th and 9th generation Intel performance design guidelines, which can lead CPU temperatures to reach 100°C to output top in-game performance.

      • We fully warrant the product under these conditions. If you see CPU temperatures rising beyond 100°C on Alienware Command Center, please contact support and they will take care of your issue - https://dell.to/2Inbc8F.

We hope that this helps your computer operate at a more manageable temperature for you.

      Best,
      Bryan

I was looking for an Alienware laptop and found an open box model at a considerable discount. So far, the laptop has been great. The only problem was it came with the wrong power cord, which I brought back to the store and exchanged out.

Alienware has just one problem: the price... sometimes you can buy them for a reasonable price... It was what i did. Amazing gaming computer. I didn't like the screen... too dark in my opinion
