This thing is a beast with some small compromises.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I said this laptop is a beast and I mean it in more than one way. I will start with the negative... At over 9.5 pounds, it is heavy. If you are looking for a commuter laptop for being productive while traveling, this is not it. It is also large (which should not be a surprise given its 18" screen). In addition to the laptop itself, you will probably also want to travel with the 360 Watt AC adapter, which is a separate component that is quite large (although, not as large as some I have seen with competitor gaming laptops). When running wide open in an intense gaming session, the battery lasts a few hours. When doing more mundane tasks, an additional hour or two is possible. Personally, I think of the battery as being there to allow for "transitionary" gaming between fixed locations or when you have an hour or so to spare. Given the processor, graphics card, and screen size, it is no surprise that this unit does indeed consume some power. This is also a $3,000'ish+ investment, which is not chump change, although it is not unreasonable for the machine's specs and is comparable to competitor units that I have seen. Now, with all that being said, I do not know anyone, myself included, who buys a high-end gaming laptop for portability, battery life, or to save money. If you want a portable gaming platform without having to lug around a PC case, monitor, keyboard, etc., there are tradeoffs. Not much you can do about it. As I mention later, though, this Area-51 is still comfortable on the go, albeit heavy, and is an absolute work horse. Another minor complaint is that it is running the Home version of Windows, which does not include Bitlocker protection and other features that some gamers may appreciate. (It is possible to upgrade to Pro, but that is another $100 on top of the cost of the laptop.) Now, for the flip side, if you are comfortable with a big and heavy laptop and are looking for true gaming performance, this laptop may very well be what you are looking for. It is very powerful and, for most of the games I play, the frame rates with optimized settings typically exceed 100-110+ fps. If I turn up every single setting to the max on new games, the frame rates are somewhere in the 40s to 60s. To my eye, however, the optimized settings for most games looks good enough for me and I really cannot tell much of a difference when graphics settings are bumped up from there. As far as the aesthetic is concerned, the laptop has rounded edges, making it comfortable to carry. The aqua color is interesting. Not quite black or dark, but when the light hits it, there is a noticeable sheen to it. It does not do a good job of concealing fingerprints/oils though. I also really like the lighting options, from the keyboard and trackpad to the rear of the unit, the underside (which has a transparent window to see the fans), and the Alienware head. The Alienware software can even automatically change the lighting colors based upon the game you are playing. (When I started up Cyberpunk, the lighting turned yellow. Nice touch.) Regarding the two main inputs on this unit (the keyboard and touchpad, no touch screen), the keyboard is comfortable enough to type on for a laptop keyboard. It is not as nice as the mechanical keyboard I use with my desktop, but again, this is a laptop and you cannot always have your cake and eat it too. One thing that I found both convenient and annoying is that there is a little vertical bump out on the "S" key to help gamers center their fingers when using the ASWD keys for gaming. When touch typing, though, that bump was enough to confuse me to relocate my fingers thinking it was the home key ("F"). Took a little getting used to. The numeric keypad is great to have, but again, the reduced size of the 0 key to accommodate other keys on the keyboard definitely can lead to inadvertent inputs. The touchpad is also quite large and has a good tactile glass feel to it. A couple areas where the laptop is lagging is the sound and the display (sort of). I say the display because, for a premium gaming laptop, it is still using an IPS display, which I know some people may criticize. When playing games with dark screens (like a Batman game), there is some light bleed on the edges. Not enough to be a deal breaker, but enough to be annoying if you are one of those people who is particular about that sort of thing. Beyond that, though, the display does look gorgeous, although I tend to prefer a glossy versus a matte finish to my displays. As for the speakers, they feel underpowered for this laptop, especially where the bass is concerned. The do get loud enough and Dolby decoding is included with the laptop, but they sound "tinny" with a lot more emphasis on the treble with very little bass. One thing I absolutely love about the laptop is that it has 3 SSD slots. One is used by the native SSD that come with the laptop, meaning you have two additional lot to expand your storage space. The unit also supports Intel's RAID platform, so if you are really daring, you can stripe 3 SSDs together in RAID 0 for up to 24 TB of storage! (I striped 4 TB and have a 12 TB drive to accommodate all of my media and games on a single device.) It is easy to access the SSDs to upgrade them, as is the RAM. One thing to note is that the motherboard is installed upside down, so additional changes or potential upgrades may be limited without some serious effort (or so I have been told; not that hardcore to need to make any change to the chipset or motherboard, personally). There are plenty of ports on the unit as well, so expandability given external peripherals should not be an issue for most. Ultimately, if I was allowed to award 1/2 stars, I would probably give this laptop a 4.5 star rating due to the IPS screen and speakers. On the other hand, there is a lot to like with the Intel Core Ultra 9 and NVIDIA GeForce 5070 Ti graphics. The screen is massive for a laptop and I have found this to be a suitable replacement for a dedicated gaming PC at home (no more big box with all the cords). The positives definitely outweigh the negatives and I have to round up to a full five stars (as opposed to rounding down to four) for that reason. It is a little pricy with the bells and whistles, but if you are looking for a no compromise (for the most part) gaming laptop, this is definitely worth considering.

You're Gonna Need A Bigger Backpack...
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.BLUF; This laptop is a beast! It's big, it's heavy, but it makes up for that with speed and performance. Awesome customizable lighting accents. Great for games and great for video rendering. Decent cooling. Upgradable. I was very surprised with how heavy and big this laptop was when I got it. I knew it was supposed to be powerful but I was hoping for it to be a little more portable. It's kind of bulky to travel to classes or work but if you're going to setup somewhere to do some gaming I think this is great. I love all the ways you can customize the lighting on the individual keys, fans, and back. The coolest thing that's new to me is a lit up track pad. I like using the track pad just because of that. However, I still use a mouse for most games and video editing due to the need to have assignable buttons. The pad is smooth and responsive but doesn't really work for a first person shooter. The display is big, bright, and crisp. I had no issues with artifacts or choppiness. I'm primarily using this for video editing so I installed the Studio NVIDIA drivers. I was able to play GoPro footage and edit videos with no problem. Rendering was very fast, twice as fast as my 5 year old computer. I was able to render a 4min video in 2min with Adobe Premier Elements. Using Adobe Photoshop was smooth too. I wish it was a touchscreen though. I liked that is has a built in SD card reader. The card reader and Thunderbolt ports were able to transfer 10GB in under a minute. I played Diablo III using the track pad. The game had no issues but that's where the track pad was a little weird to utilize. I got about 1 hour of game play on battery alone. I used my mouse and played Destiny 2 and I was very surprised with how smooth and crisp the graphics were. This was plugged in and running in performance mode. I noticed the most heat during this period. The new cooling system is pretty decent because the fans don't get super loud but keep the bottom barely warm. You can feel the hot air blow out on the sides and warm the desk but the heat and noise are nothing compared to my old Alienware. The power brick is very big and will get warm though. The speakers are really loud and have some decent surround sound but they lack a good bass. I would recommend this to a gamer or content creator that wants a little bit of mobility like library, bar, or coffee shop. This seems a bit much for someone on the go that wants to boot up anywhere. The battery life isn't the best with just 3 hours doing trivial activities. Having 2TB of storage makes it easy to use this for work and play. Also being able to upgrade to 64GB of memory gives this some longevity to wait longer to get a new laptop.

Alienware Area-51m 18": Ultimate Travel Companion
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a professional who travels frequently but still craves a powerful gaming experience in my downtime, the Alienware Area-51m 18" 300Hz Gaming Laptop has not only met but significantly exceeded my expectations. It's truly a versatile machine that bridges the gap between a high-performance gaming rig and a robust mobile workstation. Core Specifications (as reviewed): Processor: Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX RAM: 32GB Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Storage: 2TB SSD Initial Impressions & Build Quality: From the moment it arrived, snugly packaged and undamaged (kudos to FedEx!), the premium experience began. This machine strikes an excellent balance in weight – substantial enough to feel incredibly durable and well-built, yet not so heavy as to be cumbersome for travel. The overall fit and finish are precisely what one expects from a top-tier Alienware product, and I've encountered no issues in my testing. The inclusion of additional NVMe slots and upgradable RAM is a thoughtful, welcome feature that ensures future-proofing. Keyboard and Touchpad: A Tactile Delight The keyboard on the Area-51m 18" is truly a highlight. The keys offer a wonderfully weighted and solid press, which is a stark contrast to flimsy alternatives and instills confidence in their durability. It features a full numpad, with the illuminated power button conveniently integrated at its top. The top row houses a suite of dual-function keys, including a "stealth mode" that cleverly mutes lighting (except for basic keyboard backlighting) and reduces fan speed for quiet operation. A dedicated "high performance" button provides instant access to maximum power, clearly indicated by a solid light when active. Separate keys for screen brightness and an illuminated Num lock further enhance usability. I genuinely appreciate the ergonomic layout and the solid, responsive feel of the touchpad, which offers satisfyingly firm clicks. Immersive 18-inch Display: The screen quality is simply astounding, surpassing even some HDTVs I've owned. The colors are incredibly vibrant, bringing every background and detail to life. This 18-inch panel is, in my opinion, the absolute sweet spot for immersive viewing and gaming. The 300Hz refresh rate delivers an incredibly smooth experience in games, though it's important to note that achieving this requires a manual switch to dGPU mode within Alienware Command Center (ACC) or selecting "NVIDIA GPU only" in the NVIDIA Control Panel. HDR streaming is breathtaking, and for gaming, media consumption, or productivity, the vibrant colors and gorgeous resolution are a significant upgrade from typical Full HD displays. The absence of an OLED panel is a matter of personal preference and doesn't detract from its overall brilliance. RGB Lighting: A Visual Spectacle: For those who appreciate a dynamic aesthetic, the Alienware Area-51m 18" truly delivers. The RGB lighting is meticulously implemented, illuminating not only the entire keyboard but also the touchpad, creating a captivating light show. I'm still enjoying exploring the customization options to find my perfect color scheme. Seamless Setup Experience: The initial setup was straightforward, aligning with what I'd expect from modern machines. After the Alienware-specific configurations, the typical (and somewhat lengthy) process of Windows Updates followed, involving multiple downloads, installations, and restarts. Once that was complete, loading my essential software was a breeze. Performance: Beyond Expectations As an Office PC: This laptop is, frankly, complete overkill for an office PC, but in the best possible way. Its 32GB of RAM, 2TB SSD, and Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor are vastly superior to any machine I use in my primary office setup (which primarily serves as a remote access terminal for servers). Loaded with MS Office, Adobe Acrobat Pro, iTunes, and other productivity tools, it stands as the best office laptop I've ever used. As a Gaming Rig: Having previously owned an Alienware M17 and an HP Omen 880-xxx desktop, I'm no stranger to high-performance gaming. The Area-51m 18" has truly impressed. Currently, running Final Fantasy XIV is a revelation; everything looks gorgeous, with incredibly smooth gameplay, no stuttering, lightning-fast load times, and perfect rendering. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is more than capable of running my games at max settings and delivering stunning visuals. The larger 18-inch display makes it feel far more immersive than playing on a smaller laptop. Connecting my DS4 controller for that familiar PlayStation feel worked flawlessly. My recommendation isn't just theoretical – I actually lent it to a friend (who also plays FFXIV), and he was so impressed by the difference that he now prefers playing on it over his own laptop. Audio Experience: While not spectacular, the laptop's speakers are perfectly functional and meet expectations for integrated audio. During gaming sessions and YouTube video consumption, I enjoyed clear, uninterrupted sound that was entirely satisfactory for laptop speakers. Battery Life & Cooling: I haven't thoroughly tested the battery life as I primarily use it plugged in, preferring consistent power for optimal performance. However, regarding cooling, a common concern for gaming laptops, I can confidently report that this machine excels. CPU and GPU temperatures consistently hovered around the 80°C mark, and the chassis itself never felt excessively warm. While I typically use a laptop cooler out of habit (more air is always better!), I initially played for a few days without it and found it genuinely unnecessary, which is a testament to its efficient cooling system. Conclusion: Overall, I am genuinely impressed with the Alienware Area-51m 18". It's a powerhouse that delivers an exceptional gaming and productivity experience, especially for someone like me who needs a no-compromise solution for travel. If you're looking for a premium gaming laptop that combines raw power with a robust build and excellent features, Alienware has truly delivered.
