PC had to be repaired twice after the purchase: 1. power supply got bad; 2. front panel had problems that caused issues with recording and sound. Now right after the warranty, the unit started to make a loud noise and then shuts off. Dell support claims that this is one of the best PC's that they have, but experience shows very poor quality. In addition, when I spoke to tech support, I was told they make repairs with refurbished parts with only 90 day warranty. I definitely would not buy Dell products again.

This is a delayed 5 year review. I've had the machine for 5 years and while I'm taking a star for lack of upgradability the machine itself is still performing well. The 8th gen Intel took Windows 11, The 1070 is still performing pretty well, and overall the system stability is still great. Proprietary motherboard, power supply (450W so can't upgrade video card), and the lack of ability to use all 4 RAM slows are what take away a star.

This is a fast PC and works well but I dont like that the case is plastic instead of metal. I also dont like how everything is so compact inside. This may just be me being picky.

I wanted to really like this computer, however, there were a couple of issues which ultimately caused me to return for a refund. First, the computer was significantly louder than most PCs I have owned. It sounded like an airplane was trying to take off in my office. Second, within four days of owning the PC, it had a critical error loading Windows one morning. I later found out that this was due to a bad thermal controller.

      Hi Steinguard,

We appreciate your feedback and we're sorry that your computer is not running the way you had hoped it would. We'd recommend updating your computer's BIOS in the future in order to reduce the fan noise:

An out-of-date BIOS can cause loud fan noises by having an outdated temperature table for the system. Refer to update BIOS and follow the instructions to update the BIOS on your computer. You can also follow up with our Technical Support Team here - 1-800-624-9896.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2ENlXfz.

If you are looking for a high performing PC with the ability to expand memory etc then this is your desktop. From the looks of it (complete with gorgeous lights on the sides) and the fantastic alien logo with pulsing backlight to the blistering performance you cannot go wrong. Build quality is on par with Macs and it feels like a sturdy machine (borders on heavy but to me that’s a good thing). I also love the fact that it’s liquid cooled. It has ample USB ports and is pretty quiet during normal operation. Not much intrusive software is installed by Dell which is a fear on all pre built machines so that’s a good thing. Graphics look great, and everything from the Bluetooth connections to WiFi etc works flawlessly. Don’t hesitate to buy this machine, I highly recommend it.

Feel free to read forums to corroborate my review. I wanted to wait months to see if new updates from Microsoft and Dell would help. They did not. Dell's own forums admit to these issues without any resolution which is why I will not be purchasing this brand again. First issue is 25% of the time windows fails to start up. The computer will sit there for an hour until you manually boot it. Why do I let it start up for an hour? Because of the second issue which is 100% disk usage error. Basically this behemoth gaming computer will take as long as 20 minutes to start up. If ANYTHING needs to update and I do mean ANYTHING the computer will start reading 100% disk usage. This causes the PC to freeze sporadically. It also leads to issues such as the start menu bar freezing then disappearing for half an hour. Dell warns you that you can disable Micrsoft services but it is not recommended. For instance I have to disable windows update, dell updates, and super fetch just to get this machine to run. For $1200 this is a dud and a major waste of my time. If someone offered me $1k I'd sell it for a loss and buy a different brand that can actually run windows and a crappy game like diablo 3 with a stable frame rate rather than starting my computer and waiting an hour before I can either reboot it to start windows properly or wait for the freezing to end to finally play a game.

      Bmarley,

Thanks for your review. We'd recommend the following steps if you have trouble restarting your computer in the future:

      1. If the computer is displaying the Dell logo and does not move past that point, it has probably failed POST.
      2. If the power indicator lights up and it is amber or orange, this is usually an indicator that it has failed POST.
      3. If you see text on a black screen, the computer is currently performing the POST. If the computer stays in that condition and does not move past it, it has probably failed POST.
      4. If the video screen displayed anything at all during the startup process but is now black, this probably indicates that the computer failed POST.
      5. If the computer is beeping or if Caps/Num/Scroll Locks are flashing, note if there is a particular pattern in which it beeps or flashes.
      6. If the computer is not beeping and caps/num/scroll locks are not flashing, unplug all connections and remove all media communication devices (e.g. external monitors); reconnect one at a time and check if the computer functions.
      7. For a notebook, press and hold the Fn key and then press the power button. This starts the pre-boot testing and will launch ePSA. In case you have a Desktop at the Dell logo screen tap the F12 key to enter One Time Boot Menu and use the arrow keys to highlight Diagnostics and press enter.

the good: cpu - intel 8th generation i7. geekbench scores were outstanding. single core score wass 5155, multi core was 22289. in my testing, that was about 27% higher than the 7th generation i7 for multicore (obviously there are more cores, so those numbers make sense). case design - this of course is completely subjective, depending on personal taste. in my opinion, the case looks pretty slick, but it’s also well designed. relatively compact for a tower, i love the lights on the side panel. the power button is also the alienware logo, and lights up as well. all 3 of these “zones” - left panel, right panel, and alien power button, are independently configurable for light color and task. completely useless in terms of function, but very cool none the less. incidently, the alienware windows color theme that is active by default looks pretty sweet as well. completely different than a traditional windows 10 look. quiet - even playing witcher for extended periods of time, everything stayed relatively quiet. graphics card - with the market being completely out of whack because of the bitcoin nonsense, gfx cards prices are astronomical at the moment. PC manufacturers have been relatively expempt to this point, so a pre-build gaming machine is a very good way to go currently. gsync - if you’re not familiar with this, definitely have a look. the frame rates of the gfx card and the monitor sync, which prevents screen tearing. very cool - but in order to use, you’ll need a monitor that has this feature too. liquid cooling - 1 radiator, but still quite effective at cooling. very quiet as well. ports - tons of USB ports for connectivity VR ready stability - so far, zero stability issues in long gaming sessions the bad: included keyboard and mouse are relatively flimsy. i would assume (and dell probably does as well) that these peripherals are essentially throw away…the vast majority of users will have their own gaming keyboard and mouse misc: because the tower is so compact, not much internal expansion room. the included 1070 graphics card is of course giant, and just barely fits. optical drive - again, this may be considered somewhat of a useless item now a days. probably not a big deal to most users. overall: in my opinion this is a great machine. highly recommended, especially considering how expensive graphics cards are at the moment. easily 5 stars.

    Shortfall in Reliability and Performance

I purchased this Aurora R7 desktop along with a G-Synch monitor in the hopes that such system would serve as a good mid-priced solution for general purpose and occasional gaming I want to enjoy. The R7 handled the ubiquitous office applications and tax prep just fine, but the desktop would constantly stutter and lag when tasked with action genre games, whether I try to play multiplayer online or solo/campaign mode. (The games are household names for gamers, but I can't specify here because of review guidelines.) This didn't improve by lowering the output resolution or other output demands. Within three weeks, the computer wouldn't even start. I took the desktop to a team of IT professionals (again not specified here), who determined that the operating system was corrupted, reinstalled the operating system and updated bios and drivers. The R7 is now starting, but still stutters and lags with any action games. I'm very disappointed as I was looking forward to this purchase for a long time.

      DanTheAveUser,

We appreciate your feedback on your Alienware Desktop computer. One of the suggestions from our Dell Support Team is to make sure that your monitor is properly plugged into the Integrated Graphics Card on your computer. Hopefully, once this is done you will not experience the same issues that you have been facing.

Will never buy an Alienware pc ever. Bought this and 2 months after, I started Getting boot issues. Then i had to do factory restore multiple times for 6 months every month because it decided to stop booting and working. Contacted support who gave me a huge hassle and did nothing to help until finally someone decided to let me shop it in for repair. They ended up doing something that made it work fine for 4 months and now it’s having booting issues again. All I have Installed on the PC are games and chrome. I’m tech savvy enough to deal with issues so I know for a fact it’s a quality control issue. Do not buy.
