Customers are saying

Customers value the Aurora R9's performance and its ability to handle demanding games. However, some customers find the system's fan noise excessive and the cooling system inadequate, leading to high temperatures under load. The loud fans are a recurring concern, impacting the overall user experience. While many appreciate its gaming capabilities, improvements to the cooling system are suggested to address the noise and temperature issues.

Dell really dropped the ball with this computer. Not offering liquid cooling for this case type is very disappointing. Whenever trying to play destiny or resident evil 3 the computer case would make an obnoxious fan drone. The tower sounds like a vacuum cleaner when under load and playing games. The computer would constantly overheat while playing and thermal regulate. It normally idles around 75 degrees Celsius just idling. Terrible cooling system. For a system that costs almost 2k that is unacceptable . Avoid this model of Alienware at all costs.

      aalstadt,

We appreciate your feedback. We're sorry that your Alienware Desktop is not performing the way that you hoped it would. Dell released a BIOS update for your system that should help with some of the issues that you're having: https://dell.to/2XAULtU.

We hope that this helps your computer perform better for you.

Great and quiet. I don’t use for gaming but use a lot of demanding programs which were killing other comps. This one handles it all and is quiet.

    Great system!

This system is amazing! However, you must have some technical skills to get the most out of it. You can expect some technical issues with the pre-loaded Windows OS. I highly recommend you do a clean Windows reload either from the Dell recovery partition or your own Windows OS disc or USB flash drive. Aftewards, update the BIOS firmware, update the Windows OS & install the latest video card drivers. I personally use this system to custom compile Linux operatings systems for numeorus processors & it enables me to pump out distributions in under 15 minutes. No, it doesn't take 15 minutes to setup a custom distribution but it allows me to compile them in under 15 minutes as oppose to the 1 to 2 hrs it use to take me on my INTEL CORE2QUAD system before I opted to replace it with this system. The second reason I purchased this system was because I was dying to try out VR gaming. If you haven't played VR yet, you are in for a treat! It's mind blowing with the proper hardware, setup & software titles. I have the Lenovo Explorer Mixed Reality headset & can play VR games from the Windows, SteamVR & Oculus libraries. Furthermore, it supports 3rd party VR content like that offered by Youtube & NextVR. I currently have over 100 titles which are free & only purchased about 13 via STEAM at heavily discounted prices during the holiday season. There are new VR titles coming out via STEAM on the weekly basis! It's something everyone must try at least once. However, I highly suggest you do so on a quality VR headset with better than average optics. A low quality VR headset will ruin the experience. The Lenovo Explorer Mixed Reality headset offers higher resolution than the Rift S so it's a more enjoyable experience. In any case, it works flawless with the Alienware Aurora R9 & the NVIDIA 2070 GTX which scored an 11 out of a scale of 1 to 10 when I ran the STEAM VR ready test. You don't need an NVIDIA 2080 GTX to experience all that VR has to offer at this time. I haven't had any performance issues running VR games with this system. What I will say is that the system will kick up the fan speed & you will hear it blast away as you run more intensive system demanding titles ect .. Sounds like a jet engine about to take off so if you have a problem with that consider a water cooling solution instead. I was annoyed at first but I got use to the fan speed making it seem like my system was about to take off. It's called the Aurora after all. lol The system can run Linux without issue. You just need to setup the Linux OS on a USB flash drive to utilize EFI standard & not MBR BIOS. That way the system can detect the flash drive and allow you to boot Linux live or to simply run the installer. You can use a utility like Rufus for this purpose. Don't know what else to say .. For me it was a great purchase after reloading the OS, updating BIOS firmware & tweaking the system to my liking. It's been working great for me so far. The reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 stars is because you will need to have some technical knowledge to get your system to function as expected.

Meets Standard performance, insanely loud fans.

I picked this up from the store, the RTX 2070 config with the 9700. From actual reviewers I saw that it was rated fairly well. Decent cooling, standard Alienware flair. The performance of the machine is exactly what I expected. Hitting the frames and staying at reasonable temps, however this comes with the cost of insanely loud fans. Hitting over 65dBs. And I'm not talking about only while gaming. The fans will boost to that noise just browsing Firefox or Chrome. Opening any application becomes embarrassing. They'll fire up and down any time the computer isn't in idle. The noise isn't just annoying, its intrusive. I've tried disabling power boost and setting aggressive fan curves that aren't crazy loud, but then the CPU overheats if I keep it at a reasonable volume. There is no happy middle ground. Avoid this computer unless you use it alone, with noise cancelling headphones.

Not Designed to be Air Cooled!!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this PC after my previous generation aurora got bricked by god knows what. I came in with high hopes as Alienware has never let me down before, I've owned 2 other Alienware desktops before this one and they both did wonderful jobs but the big problem was pretty apparent when I went to play virtually any game, it was the Fans, the system runs hot since It's much more enclosed then the other previous gen Aurora R8s and to compensate the fans would blow at full bore almost the whole time, it was doable for maybe a day, however it became very annoying to play any game when it sounded like a plane was taking off in your room, I did some digging and found out that this new model was designed with water cooling in mind not air cooling. Therefore the system would heat up the longer you used it, if I just started the system up I'd get acceptable temps while idling however after a couple hours of doing homework and web browsing I could easily get the system up to 69-75 C!! for idling these are unacceptable temps and I have no clue how this would have passed play testing, I only say this because Dell customer Support has been unhelpful, slow to respond to emails and seems to say that this is how the system was in fact designed and is meant to be, when i brought this up the first thing they told me is that this was happening because i didn't buy the water cooled model! Water Cooled or not these systems should have been tuned to be usable and not massive annoyances! The only reason I've been holding on to this machine and have not returned it is that I have school work to be finished and I'm still trying to hope Dell Support comes through and helps me out. TL;DR: This machine was designed to be water cooled so buy the water cooled version of this! NOT this air cooled one.

      John,

We're very sorry to hear about the fan noise that you've been experiencing with your new Aurora R9. We would recommend that you update the BIOS on your computer to version 1.0.4 at the following link: https://dell.to/2XAULtU. This should help the fans operate more effectively on your computer.
