This Is What Years of Refinement Looks Like!

I've been using Alienware gaming laptops for several years now. After using this Alienware m16 R2 over the past week, I can tell that it is a result of years of product development and refinement. While Alienware laptops have always excelled in delivering top tier performance, I would once in a while find some areas for improvement in the build quality of certain components. In the past, this has included things like squeaky display lid hinges, subpar touchpads, and the overall build quality of the laptop. Alienware must have been listening to community feedback as this new Alienware m16 R2 is the most premium gaming laptop that they've delivered to date. They've also made some other improvements that I'll cover in this review. In terms of design and construction, Alienware nailed it. I'm a huge fan of the minimalist and sleek design of this laptop along with the gorgeous dark metallic moon colorway. The only hints of branding that you see on the outer shell of the laptop is the usual Alienware alien head logo and an etched "16" on the outer lid (denoting the size of the display). When closed, the laptop is less than an inch in height which is impressive considering that this laptop has a built in ethernet adapter. The entire outer display lid is made from a very premium aluminum. The rest of the laptop shell is constructed from a mix of high quality grade feeling plastics and aluminum parts. The entire laptop has some heft to it and feels top notch. The hinge action when opening the laptop lid is buttery smooth. The individual keys on the keyboard feel substantial and premium. The touchpad is by far the most premium touchpad I've experienced on any Alienware laptop in the past. I'm also a huge fan of the placement of the I/O ports. I love that the AC power input is located on the rear of the laptop. This provided me with an unobstructed gaming experience whenever using it. On the left side of the laptop there's a multi-gigabit ethernet adapter with a 3.5mm headphone jack. On the right side there's two USB-A 3.2 ports with a micro SD card slot. And finally, on the rear of the laptop, you have the AC power input, a 2.1 HDMI output, a thunderbolt 4 output, and a USB-C display port output. I also love that the AC power brick is finally a compact size! Gone are the days of carrying around a massive power brick for you gaming laptop. The Intel 16 core Ultra 7 155H CPU combined with the RTX 4070 GPU makes for some monster performance on this m16 R2 laptop. I feel that this CPU and GPU is the perfect combination to run games at the intended resolution of 2560x1600. It also houses 16GB of fast DDR5 5600 RAM (2x 2800Mhz). It goes without saying that this laptop is a multi-tasking powerhouse. I tested running an emulated virtual environment (i.e. EVE-NG) and deployed various network and security appliances to tax the CPU and memory. It ran multiple nodes without a hitch. I tested opening several chrome tabs while running several music streaming apps, video streaming apps, and even ran a game in the background with all of this going on. The experience was flawless. Not only was I absolutely floored by how smooth my games ran at 1600P on this laptop, but I was equally impressed at how fine tuned Alienware's thermal performance has become. This is an area that I've noticed Alienware keeps slightly improving upon with each major iteration of their gaming laptops. What really stood out on this laptop is how cool the entire surface area around the keyboard felt. In the past, the surface area around the keyboard (including the keyboard itself) usually tended to get pretty warm. On this m16 R2, the entire surface area, including the keyboard, felt cool and unaffected by whatever game I was running. One important thing to note is that in order to optimize the performance, the AC power adapter should be plugged in when gaming. I noticed that when the power brick gets disconnected, the performance is reduced due to no longer having the same level of power delivery available to the GPU. This results in a lower GPU core clock and thus a lower frame rate. I typically noticed about a ~20 FPS loss when it wasn't connected to the power adapter. I've included the benchmarks below for some of the games I tested. ***All tests performed were with laptop plugged into AC power which provides higher performance due to the added power delivery to the graphics card*** TimeSpy Extreme 4K: TimeSpy Extreme Score: 5607 Graphics Score: 5520 CPU Score: 6161 Apex Legends 1440p Estimated game performance: 140+ FPS GTA V 1440p Ultra Estimated game performance: 75+ FPS Temps: Graphics Test: GPU temp low: 54 °C GPU temp high: 79 °C CPU temp low: 61 °C CPU temp high: 79 °C CPU Test: CPU temp low: 61 °C CPU temp high: 94 °C GPU temp low: 53 °C GPU temp high: 57 °C --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dead Island 2: Resolution: 2560x1600 Graphics Setting Preset: High FPS high: 111 FPS low: 81 FPS avg: 91 GPU temp avg: 77 °C -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan Wake 2: Resolution: 2560x1600 Quality Preset: High FPS high: 87 FPS low: 46 FPS avg: 59 GPU temp avg: 77 °C ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Resident Evil 4 Remake Resolution: 2560x1600 Quality Preset: High FPS high: 186 FPS low: 85 FPS avg: 141 GPU temp avg: 75 °C --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I didn't think that I would really care for the Alienware command center software but it actually turned out to be super useful. For starters, I love that it automatically applies the "Performance" preset every time you launch a game. This ensures that you can squeeze out as much performance as you can from the included components. It also displays purposeful metrics like the temps of your components and core clocks. It also allows you to fully customize the lighting accents around the touchpad, the alien head logos, as well as individually changing the RGB lighting of each individual key on the keyboard. While the built-in speakers aren't going to vibrate any windows, they sound great for built-ins! There was no distortion even at max volume. It also gets decently loud. Another key feature I was impressed with was the display. 2560x1600 resolution provides a perfectly balanced pixel density to performance ratio to pair with an RTX 4070. The 240Hz display with GSYNC provided an incredibly smooth experience either when gaming or just casually navigating around on my desktop screen. While Alienware doesn't list the display's panel technology, to me the beautiful color reproduction and white uniformity is on par with an IPS panel. While I do wish that it was capable of producing slightly more than 300 nits of peak brightness, it still produces a pretty bright and vibrant picture. Overall, this is my favorite gaming laptop that Alienware has delivered to date. The performance is impressive, it has top notch build quality, it has very good thermal performance, and it does all of this in a sleek package. If you're looking for a high performance gaming laptop and/or a productivity power house with a sleek package to boot, look no further!

The Alienware - m16 R2 is a capable, well-designed gaming laptop that provides as much business as it does pleasure. The screen is gorgeous, the keyboard and trackpad are stellar, the fit and finish of the body are excellent, and the system's performance is close to top notch. For me though, there are little things holding the m16 R2 back that don't quite earn it 5 stars in my book. Let's look at a few Pros and Cons: Pros: • 2650x1600 240 Hz QHD screen is gorgeous to look at, game, and watch videos on. • Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor is super fast and should be a very capable choice for years to come. Cinebench MultiCore score of 17020, single core score of 1640. • GeForce RTX 4070 GPU is strong for a laptop video card. Superposition average framerate of 150.6 Hz. • Addressable RGB for every key on the keyboard is incredible, as are the RGB trackpad border and Alienware logos on the body and rear of the screen. • Keyboard is very comfortable to type on, and hotkeys for volume/mic controls, stealth mode, function buttons are all great. • Alienware System Command Center software is easy to use and provides lots of customization options. • HDMI, Thunderbolt and USB-C w/DisplayPort on the back of the chassis, plus two USB-A 3.0, full-sized ethernet and headphone jack are excellent in terms of connectivity. • Design of the laptop is very sleek. Can game incognito and disable RGB Alienware logos for a more pro look. Cons: • In high-performance mode, the fans are LOUD. Like, 64 dB up close and 50 dB at 3 feet away. Expect to wear headphones if you want to game with this on high-performance settings. • LED screen does have some light bleed on the corners and draws more power than an OLED, but 140Hz is boss, so I'm okay with giving that up. 1.6:1 ratio is a bit odd if you're coming from a traditional 16:9 setup. • No 10-key on a 16-inch laptop is weird. Would much rather have keys closer to the edge and have a proper 10-key pad. • The speakers can get loud but offer almost no bass whatsoever. • USB-A ports on the right side of the body leave you bumping your hand into the port if you use a wired right-handed mouse. Battery life has been decent, with about 3.5 hours of run time doing productivity tasks in performance mode with the screen on full brightness, and a bit longer when the screen is slightly dimmed and the PC is set to balanced or quiet mode. All-in-all, I'm pleased with this laptop. I had no problem running games from Steam and the Microsoft Store at medium or even high-quality settings. Portal RTX looks amazing. Doom Eternal is immersive and runs great at well over 100 fps. If you're looking for a nice laptop that can run modern AAA games, while also performing well in stealth mode for work, this laptop is a good choice.

I just received my Open box - Excellent condition m16 R2 from Best Buy. And within 10 min after setting it up, half of the screen was gone black. I hard rebooted and gave it another try. Still no luck. After getting the issue for the third time in less than 30 minutes, this laptop is going back to Best Buy! Dell doesn’t make quality gaming laptop like they used to anymore.

Alienware - the first name in gaming PCs. They are what I think of when I think of a gaming PC, and have set the standard both for performance and aesthetics for both desktop and laptop computers. The Alienware 16 R2 continues this tradition. This model has a bit smaller footprint, losing the ledge at the rear of the machine that was previously used for heat handling, which results in more room for wrist rests and a machine that will not take a ridiculous amount of time to find a backpack/bag to carry it in. Additionally, it loses some weight due to the reduction in size. Along with this reduction, there is the loss of the "racetrack" RGB on the rear of the machine - in exchange you get an RGB ledge to the trackpad. This machine has an exceptionally solid feel to it resulting in zero flex. The model I received has 16GB DDR5 5600 RAM (2 sticks of 8GB Hynix-branded RAM), and a 1 TB NVME Gen 4 SSD with a slot for a second NVME drive. Although I can see this solved via software on any machine, this laptop has a "Stealth Mode", which allows a keystroke toggle to turn off the gaming look - it turns off all the RGB if you're going to use the computer in the office or at school - anywhere you want to hide the fact that it's a gaming machine. Although it does not need it (depending on who you ask), I upgraded mine to have 4 TB NVME SSDs and 64GB DDR 5600 (32x2). I am unsure of what the top end limit would be on the RAM, but it had zero issues taking the 64GB I put in it. NOTE: If you do the upgrade, be prepared that when you first turn it on it will take a few minutes to "train" the memory before the machine fully boots - don't panic, this is normal!

The Alienware m16 R2 is a powerful gaming laptop that delivers excellent performance for the price. The Intel Core Ultra 7 paired with the RTX 4070 handles modern AAA titles smoothly at high settings, and the 240Hz QHD+ display is crisp, vibrant, and buttery smooth for both gaming and creative work. Build quality feels premium with the signature Alienware aesthetic and sturdy chassis, though it is a bit on the heavier side for portability. Thermals are mildly managed and the fans can get loud under mild load. The keyboard is responsive and comfortable for long sessions, and the customizable RGB lighting adds a nice touch. Battery life is average, around 4 to 5 hours with moderate use and less while gaming, but that is typical for this level of hardware. Overall, the m16 R2 is a great option for gamers and creators who want top tier performance in a sleek, futuristic design. Pros: Excellent gaming performance Beautiful 240Hz QHD+ display Premium build and design Plenty of storage and fast SSD Cons: A bit heavy Fan noise under mild load Average battery life Heats up fast

    Exactly What I Needed

I wanted a thinner PC that allows me to play games on the go but still able to take to the office and not be over the top as many gaming PCs are these days. This fits that bill. The stealth mode is not a gimmick and works really well. Of course, there is a trade off - the computer will run hot as the fans do not ramp up as normal. But, I compared that to my work PC (a Dell) and the temps are not that different from each other, so not to bad. And, lets face it, these gaming PCs are designed to run upwards of 100c, so basic office tasks in the 60c range is nothing. When gaming, I play in balanced mode. Fan noise is very manageable and the FPS loss, only about 3-4, is worth it compared to performance. Like any gaming PC, I did have to dial in settings. Just playing WoW, FFXIV, and Diablo 4 at max settings (which it can do), the temps are in the upper 90s. At native resolution, all three games are well above 120 FPS. For WoW players, Valdrakken runs smooth around 60-70 FPS on a busy day. However, I dialed it back from max settings a bit and did cap frames to 75 (I can't tell a difference with my eyes, but do respect others can). Now, temps stay around 70-80c depending on content in game and fans are very slight with most of the time being inaudible due to game audio. Keyboard deck does not get warm at all when playing for long sessions, and like all Alienwares the keyboard is great to use. Speakers are fine. If you are not an audiophile, you will enjoy. If sound quality is important to you, you most likely will not enjoy - but I suspect you'll have your own headset, so most likely a moot point. I have no complaints, personally. Screen - this is where most of the YouTubers and influencers will try and tell you it's a big miss. On paper, they are not wrong. On paper, it's the weakest element of the PC (aside from the trackpad, more on that below). It "only" gets 300 nits of brightness and doesn't have HDR, on paper. However, in practice, it's a good quality screen. Games and videos look crisp on it, and compared to my Macbook, which is regarded as having a great screen, I can't tell that much of a difference (again keep in mind 75 FPS versus 150 FPS looks the same to me). Sure, some colors are more vivid on the Macbook, but had I not seen them side by side, I would rate this screen as fantastic. And, lets talk HDR. Microsoft and HDR don't mix. Google HDR and Windows, it's implementation has been horrible, so I'm happy it doesn't have HDR as that's one less thing to mess with. And, lastly, lets be honest. When not on the go, it's plugged into an external monitor and the screen becomes home to Discord, so not needing much there. Now, a con - the trackpad. It's bad, think 2015ish midrange laptop bad. My wifes Alienware X15 and my Macbook is so much better. I'll never understand why Dell/Alienware does this. They have the parts, why cheap out here? Con, but not really - battery. It's a gaming laptop. It's not going to get amazing battery life, and that's OK. So far, I'm getting about 5-7 hours, but I haven't really pushed it or used it all day - that's just Windows estimate. I suspect the 5 hour mark is more realistic. All in all, this is a great laptop. If you can get it on sale - it's a no brainer in my opinion. You get the best warranty support in the industry, albeit Lenovo is quickly catching up (steer clear of Asus by the way), solid specs, fully upgradable ram and storage, all in a modest package that is not over the top. Perfect for my needs.

When it comes to laptop gaming, Dell’s Alienware brand is a household name. I’ve followed Alienware for awhile, owning a few Alienware laptops myself. This Alienware M16 R2 is a good one, not perfect, but great nonetheless. First of all; the design of the M16 R2 is smooth. Dell removed the vent that poked out in the back of previous M16 laptops, changing the cooling for a more standard esque design. Now the screen attaches as the back. All things considered, this laptop is light! I’ve been lugging around another gaming laptop in my backpack, and after replacing it with the M16 R2, it feels as if I don’t have a laptop in my backpack. The M16’s webcam allows for windows hello, which is always a great addition. Its ability to recognize me has been somewhat of a mixed bag, but it noticed me most of the time. I updated everything before digging in to things, which is standard laptop procedure. The screen…the screen is one of the few downsides of this laptop. It’s good. It’s ok, it’s not great. Obviously going OLED or Mini LED would increase the price and possibly push the R2 out of Dell’s intended price point. With that said, this is still a high refresh rate (240hz) 1600p screen. The keyboard is nice. I like the inclusion of “stealth” mode, which, allows you to switch all the LED lights off at the push of a button…but I’m not really one to feel the need to hide all my bright lights. Using Alienware’s included software I customized the lighting on my keyboard, the lighting of my alien head and the lighting around the touchpad…I’m not cutting those off. The M16 R2 comes equipped with the intel core Ultra 7 processor and a 175 watt TDP 4070! That’s a decent amount of power for a laptop 4070. In terms of performance, this thing can run everything at high settings. Yea, you’re not gonna get 60 frames running Cyberpunk on psycho ray tracing settings, but with a few small tweaks Cyberpunk runs great on the M16 R2. The performance of this rig matched with its mobility is magic. With that said, gaming to the max this laptop sounds like a jet engine is taking off. With headphones on (which, I’d recommend for any laptop) you can barely notice it. Sans headphones the fans are loud. Loud fans are acceptable if it keeps the machine relatively cool, and in my experience the M16 R2 ran at acceptable temps….just use headphones. The 1TB SSD hard drive isn’t gonna cut it with the gaming install sizes of today, but there is a 2nd SSD slot available, and 4 TB SSDs have come down in price. I’d also prefer 32 gigs of ram as opposed to the included 16, but it appears that, as well as the hard drive and screen were price point concessions. Overall, the Alienware M16 R2 is a super solid gaming laptop with great mobility. While I would have preferred a better screen and more memory, those sacrifices give this machine a more obtainable price point while maintaining great performance. I’d strongly recommend this laptop to anyone as long as they game with headphones on.

I will start by saying this is the 2nd Alienware I got. The 1st one was the m16 R1 from 2013 and this one the m16 R2 from 2014. I will start by saying that I return my R1 model back in 2014 simply because it was to heavy and you could grill on top of that keyboard. This new model R2 is so mush better it run cooler and as of Jun 2025 is simply the best value I could find for an open box excellent condition under 1300.00. The laptop is simply beautiful and it run all the games so sooth. The i7 ultra run so efficient and the laptop only feels hot if you are gaming. The laptop run so quiet when in idle is a joy to use as an everyday desktop replacement. My only complaint would be I wish the screen was a bit brighter but the blacks look so good and the image is so smooth that it pays for the 300nits that to me looks more like close to the 350-380 nits. And of course you can always make the game brighter using the brightness setting in the game so not a big deal. An excellent laptop for gaming powerful 4070 excellent quality laptop for less than $1300 is my better option.

5 stars for a great GAMING laptop. This is sort of marketed as a hybrid laptop that can be both professional/productivity and a gaming laptop but there are a couple of things that make this a hard productivity laptop for me still. This is a very dense laptop due to the hardware it is packing and the sturdy build quality. It is quite heavy to pack for on the go use despite this year's much smaller redesign. I find the bottom gets a little warm with moderate workloads which makes it somewhat uncomfortable to use as a LAPtop. Battery is some of the best I have experience in this category of devise. Still sub-10hrs for sure in most scenarios. 6 to 8 hrs. on average. When closed and stored in a bag, I find the screen hinge doesn't quite have a positive lock. It is someone "flappy" in its closed position, if that makes any sense. Once open though, the hinge is solid. I think there might be a slight dead zone in the hinge of mine between o and 5 degrees. If you are looking for something to keep relatively stationary and utilize the GPU for design related work tasks, this might be a good cost saving option for your workloads. As far as gaming, which is what this is really for, IMO. There's nothing negative to really to say. You'll get blazing performance in just about all modern titles. The 240Hz refreshing screen is great. I also found blacks to be much darker on this model than on my previous m17 (2022) which adds to overall color separation in high contrast scenes. It is no OLED, like many others are doing this year, but it is good. Small note on upgradeability. You can add up to 64 gb RAM (2x32) and up to a total of 2 SSDs. This should be the min. standard for all gaming laptops but sadly that is not the case. Compared to its competition this year, this is a welcomed "feature". Overall, this is a good machine for gaming and some specific work scenarios. This is still more of a stationary machine though. If that is what you are looking for, you will be hard pressed to find better specs at this price point this year.

This Alienware M16 is an absolute beast gaming laptop. It comes equipped with a monster 16 core - 22 thread Intel Core 7 Ultra 155H CPU, a 240hz 2560x1600 screen, 16 GBs of DDR5 Memory, and the RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. Overall, very solid specs and more than enough for 90% of gamers out there. Going into testing this thing out, I had no real expectations as I have never used an Alienware laptop before and have been mainly playing games on my PC for years and was curious to see how it would compare up against my AMD 5900x/RTX 3080 system. This Laptop of course coming in as a cheaper, more portable option than a Desktop PC, while also having a built in 240hz monitor, I was expecting to see some trade offs in performance even against last-gen hardware, but man is this thing a beast. I tested the two using both Unigine Heaven and Cinebench and while my PC still outscored the M16, it was a lot closer than I expected, I will also add that for the GPU benchmarks, the M16 has a higher resolution than my Monitor, so the Laptop GPU was being pushed harder. In actual Gaming scenarios, both options were maxing the FPS out for the given refresh rates, so there was no noticeable difference in my case other than this M16 having a 240hz screen so the pixels are refreshing at a faster rate than my monitor. As far as everything else goes, it comes equipped with an ethernet port, headphone jack, multiple usb-a 3.2 gen 1 ports, a HDMI 2.1 port, SD card reader, a thunderbolt 4.0/usb-c 3.2 gen 2 port, and another usb-c 3.2 gen 2 port. Given the value that this laptop provides and the added bonus of portability, it's a no brainer option in the current market. Even for those already with a PC, this could be a great option for an on the go machine that could double as a racing sim PC or used for anything you want really.

Got this computer about a week ago. Pretty happy with it but there are some things to note. Will break it down the best I can. Build Quality - A, Nice metal finish, very soft touch wrist rest. The keyboard is really nice with per key RGB lighting. Upgradeability - A+, I upgraded my model from 1 TB to 3 TB SSD with an added m.2 Samsung 990 Evo HD for $125. Not bad, also upgraded to 32 gb ram for $89. Not too shabby either. Most thin and light laptops don't give you the option! Portability - A, feels actually pretty slim, I like it. It is a little heavier, I think (4.5 pounds). However nothing crazy, also helps that the charger is smaller than most power bricks. Overall feels pretty good. As far as battery life, I am not sure...I always have mine plugged in. But let's be honest, if you are playing games or doing heavy workloads it will eat up your battery so more than likely it will be plugged in. Performance B - Pretty good graphics card. I play Cyberpunk 2077 on medium settings with no ray tracing and with frame gen on DLSS to balanced and I get about 85-110 FPS. I also do unreal engine work and blender on it and it runs it without breaking a sweat. My biggest gripe is the heat. The Ultra 7 runs hot and this is the same for other laptops too like the Zephyrus G 16. They say the processor has a limit of 110 degrees but honestly anything running at 90 or higher for sustained periods is not good for any components. Under heavy load it will go from about 75-90 on the CPU in performance mode. This is a little warmer than I like so I use a little laptop stand which I strongly recommend. Only cost $12 bucks and is pretty low profile and portable. This drop temps to about 65-75 under load which is muchhhh better. Display B+ - Not the brightest at 300 nits but decently bright. 240hz is silky smooth and colors looks pretty nice with decent contrast. Software D - Unfortunately when I was using the Alienware command center (Controls your fan profiles and RGB) it would give me some weird micro stutters in games. Tried plenty of troubleshooting (upgrading drivers/bios/disabling Intel Speedstep etc) but it didn't solve it. After setting my fan profile to balance and then uninstalling Alienware command center completely the stutters went away. From what I read on Reddit it has to do with how command center sends WMI messages to windows which causes issues. If you do get this computer I suggest setting the fan profile to what you like (I recommend balance or performance) and then uninstalling command center as well as the other dell software (bloatware). Overall I am pretty happy for it as I got it on sale. I use this in a triple monitor setup at home and bought an extra charger so I can just unplug it from my dock and put it in my backpack for on the go. TLDR - Good computer, runs hot, get a little riser (I bought the SODI Laptop Stand for Desk) on amazon. Also make sure to set your profile and uninstall some software and you should be good to go. Would recommend.
