Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the x17 R1's performance, especially at 1080p, its effective cooling system, and the impressive speed of its SSD. Many appreciate the laptop's design and the large, high refresh rate screen, although some find the battery life could be improved. The keyboard is also generally well-received.

Bought around 2 years ago and unfortunately this computer is currently not working. It looks awesome and all but dell customer service is no help and you could honestly get something better for cheaper. Within the first year I couldn’t even run the laptop without having it plugged to the charger.

I bought an open box in excellent condition certified by Geek Squad. Build: Alienware x17 R1, Intel 11800H CPU, NVIDIA GTX 3070, 16gb of RAM, and a 1080p FHD 360hz Display w/ NVIDIA GSYNC capability. I only had this for about 19~ hours before returning it. I had to return it due to having the same issues as my former AW x15 R1. TL;DR on the x15 was that it had stuttering and freezing issues. Sent 4 times to BB and got instore credit in the end. Whole process took roughly 2 months (If you want to know the full details on the x15, go find the x15 R1 on the website and go to 1* star reviews lol). Same deal with the x17 R1. It worked great for about 3-4 hours before I noticed the SAME EXACT ISSUES as my x15. I did the normal trouble shoot methods and then some: uninstall and reinstall drivers, disabled certain programs in the system settings to see if that would resolve the issues, ran hardware diagnostics, uninstalled my antivrius and AWCC, changed display refresh rate, in game testing w/ HZD and Genshin Impact. Nothing worked. I searched some other methods. I was going to wipe the computer and reinstall Windows 11 to see if that would work, but I gave up after I wiped the computer. I was tempted to give this beast another day or two to test it out, but I didn't want to have to go through the whole x15 ordeal again. Despite the frustrating ordeal I went through with this laptop and the x15, I'm giving the AW x17 3*. Although the freezing/stuttering can be attributed to faulty hardware components in my unit, it did live up to the hype. AW devices typically run hot, but the cooling system inside lived up to its name. Hot, but not flame consuming that is the x15 R1. For the 3 or 4 hours it ran normally, the performance was top tier in the couple of games I enjoyed on it. I really wanted to stick with Alienware and have my own x17 after so many positives this thing got from so many people. Linus Tech Tips, Dave2D, Mash IT, Jayztwocents, Hardware Canucks, and iirc Bitwit all gave glowing reviews. They are transparent in their analysis and thoughts, but overall said it was a game changer in the gaming laptop industry. And having positive experiences with AW's m11x mini gaming laptop in 2010 and AW 17 R3 in 2016, too. The m11x served me well and the 17 R3 is still kicking. I guess I won't be with Alienware for a time. I guess they hate me as I got a 2nd bad unit in 2 months, lol. I'll be switching gears to another brand for this round.

The Alienware x17 R1 is an impressive gaming laptop that offers a sleek and futuristic design with its Lunar Light color scheme. Powered by an Intel Core i7 processor and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, it delivers exceptional gaming performance. The 17.3" FHD display provides vibrant and crisp visuals, making games come to life. With 16GB of memory and a generous 1TB solid-state drive, you'll have plenty of storage and memory for all your gaming needs. The laptop also features Alienware's advanced cooling system, ensuring that it stays cool even during extended gaming sessions. The build quality is top-notch, and the keyboard is comfortable for gaming and typing. The RGB lighting customization adds a fun element to the design. It's relatively lightweight for a 17-inch gaming laptop, which is a plus for portability. However, the laptop's price is on the higher side, and the battery life is not the best, as is expected with gaming laptops. If you're a serious gamer looking for a premium gaming experience and don't mind the price tag, the Alienware x17 R1 is a fantastic choice.

I've owned many countless brands of gaming laptops and this is by far my fav. The cooling is simply amazing and the best I've ever seen on a gaming laptop and I am on 3,000 plus Lenovo legions and MSI raiders. If you are thinking about a 15" don't, you sacrifice a lot in the way of cooling and I would not recommend it. The only downsides I would say with this laptop is first why is there no 10 key? Second the Alienware command center software has a good amount of bugs that need to be ironed out with software updates. Other than that you can undervolt it, and has a muck switch in the bios after doing update, it has Windows hello so you can log in with your face great keyboard and trackpad and the speakers are surprisingly good for a laptop. If you have the money to spend or spending close to this I would definitely recommend this one about anything else Best buy carries. Yes I wish it had a 3080 in it but I will survive

Replaced a desktop pc, does t he job, the big screen is perfect. Only wish they keyboard had a number pad instead of just numbers at the top. Only complaint. Had a dead pixel on purchase, 7 months later took it back they fixed it.

Gaming laptops are notorious for two things: 1) Thermal throttling; and, 2) sounding like a jet engine. This laptop isn't either one. The unique cooling design implement by Alienware (Dell) ensures that thermal saturation, with unobscured airflow to all fan inputs and outputs, is below the threshold for thermal throttling -- inputs for the fans are position on the bottom and top of the laptop whereas outputs are on the back and sides of the laptop. Even with the fans pegged at 100%, the sound produced is NOT annoying, whiny, or high pitched like some fans can be. Instead, the sound produced is the whooshing you'd expect from air moving through a grill. I purchased this laptop open box for $2,100 and I have been extremely happy with that purchase. Other things of note: 1) The coating on the outer surfaces of the keyboard *feel* delicate. I do not know the durability, but it feels like it will easily mar. 2) You have to use a 240W power supply -- 180W will not cut it.

Sturdy high performance laptop. It does look sleek and stylish. It runs at max settings for all my games. Unboxing and unwrapping felt so nice to see how the packaging was so well done. But i do have one gripe. The sound isn't so great. Or to say more precisely its the speakers. I also own a macbook air from 2020 and also got the zephyrus rog g15 from 2021 and both of their speakers sound so much better. Overall the performance of this machine is superb

Amazing build quality, except the the jarring light bleed on some spots on the edge of the panel, but no dead pixels. Excellent performance, pretty outstanding cooling, but quite loud. My biggest complaint, only 2 USB-A ports. I need three for my mouse, keyboard, and microphone. This serves as a desktop replacement so 90% of the time I play on an external monitor, at 1440p 144Hz, otherwise I might have been asking for a replacement unit due to the light bleed. Would I buy it again? Probably. If Dell/Alienware could get the light bleed under control this would be the best laptop on the market.

I have owned this laptop for 4 months, and I have not experienced any issues. This laptop runs fast and efficiently cooled, I was surprised the fans runs so quiet when in idle, compared to my older laptop. I under-volted the CPU to -0.40mv because it seemed to get a little too hot and unstable for my comfort when playing certain games. I also have added a second SSD and upgraded the RAM to 32GB. I also use an external monitor with it too. This feels like a perfect desktop replace and I hope this laptop lasts me 5 years or more with great care :)

This is amazing for my first gaming laptop, I did heavy research before making any decisions and this one peeked my interest. I honestly have no complaints, other than the battery life isn’t the greatest when not plugged in which really doesn’t bother me since I always have it plugged in and It will get loud and very hot depending on the game/settings, but there are apps to tweak everything. Overall amazing purchase. I would definitely recommend

Pros: Pimped out with all the good ports you need including thunderbolt 4, ethernet, hdmi.... and except for the charging and audio ports, all are on the back so the desktop looks neat. Sexy packaging and styling, the white is very nice! Cons: Weight: SOOO HEAVY!! It is a couple pounds heavier than comparable MSI models. No Number Pad on the keyboard, so entering your pin or dealing with a lot of numbers is clunky. Only one regular USB port making me need a docking station to connect what i need. Only 16GB ram. It is upgradable to 64, but I think 32GB should be the minimum in this category and price point. Battery indicator: I'm not too sure about battery life. It only tells you what percentage is left, but no idea how many hours or minutes that gives you before needing a charge.
