Customers are saying
Customers have good things to say about the x17 R1's performance, especially at 1080p, its effective cooling system, and the impressive speed of its SSD. Many appreciate the laptop's design and the large, high refresh rate screen, although some find the battery life could be improved. The keyboard is also generally well-received.

cook this thing a little more.
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.this laptop needs a little more time in the oven, my unit had an inverter going bad in the screen causing flashing on the right side. the rear IO ports would decide "i've had enough of this working stuff" and drop connection to my external drives. the CPU /GPU were kept VERY cool thanks to its dark magic cooling system an intel CPU never going above 78 c in a gaming laptop?!?!!? woowwwieee!!!! the video card indeed throttled up to its 140 watt limit like a champ. almost the best thing on the market...1080p screen though? yeah 300hz is nice, but I'd rather have a 165 hz 1440p screen,...if Im not mistakenn alienware offers that...best buy likes picking the options that make little sense.

Gaming first, few minor compromises
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you game on a laptop and prefer Dell, Intel, Nvidia and want it wrapped in premium materials. The Alienware X17 hardware has CPU/GPU to spare and fairly stylish in lunar gray/white color should make any PC gamer very happy. Fast bright screen, great mechanical keyboard, good audio quality and volume levels for a laptop this thin and RGB lighting is subtle but enough to show you came to play. Overall performance is far above average for more than just gaming. Battery is a little light for this much horsepower. Yet, basic day to day use of the laptop should yield several hours on "Best Power Efficiency". Note that ALL but power and headphones ports are on the rear of the PC. Great for docking setups, but might trouble some who may need constant access to SD slot and USB. This laptop has all the current high end ports one might need. My current gaming habits only include a few newer titles at the moment. Everything runs smooth at the higher frame rates, a favorite racing game played great on ultra settings. It looked far better than it looked on console. And when you push the the Nvidia 3070 to its potential. The new cooling setup does its job at quieter, almost muffled levels of fan noise compared to other gaming systems I have used. Think more like jet aircraft at the far end of the runway about to taxi, less like a vacuum cleaner. Its definitely audible, but not so obnoxious as to disturb others in the room. VERY NICE DELL! Wife even noticed it was a more muted exhaust tone. It is dead silent under low usage tasks. While thoroughly enjoying my Alienware X17. A few minor compromises have not gone unnoticed. Windows 11 was not installed as quoted in description. It crashed on initial Cortana speech startup and possibly reverted to Windows 10 after 2 power downs(holding power button for several seconds)?!? The webcam is not the highest resolution and seems to be aimed a bit high for desk/lap use, but at least this laptop included one for Windows Hello. And I wish they still had the number pad built in to the keyboard. Also surprised secondary key functions are not lit. It has not been the easiest laptop to get up and running. Windows 11 is up and running fine now. Issues do seem almost common when you get a PC at the beginning of a new operating system, there will be issues and I don't blame Dell or the Alienware hardware for this. Once you get past the early day hurdles. The computer is a beast on gaming and productivity apps are easily tamed with power to spare. Its a worthy daily use rig.

Nicey But Pricey
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Alienware x17 R1 is undoubtedly a solid laptop, one that rivals many others. I’m having a lot of fun with the x17 R1 the more time I spend using it. I wish there was a black variant, but white does just fine. I don't care for the “17” design on the lid. The LED placement is great--on the back where the ports are located, on the lid, the keyboard, and the power button. They are all of course customizable in the Alienware Command Center. The 17.3-inch FHD 360Hz display is beautiful and crisp at 1080p. It doesn't have HDR but not many laptops do. You'll benefit from higher frame rates, but this laptop doesn't need 360Hz in my opinion. It would have been more effective to go to 165Hz or even 240Hz, since many games have a hard cap somewhere in there (which this laptop is fully capable of achieving with older games or some newer games running at lower settings). I was surprised to discover that the x17 R1 is equipped with a Samsung PM9A1 NVMe 1TB SSD. I didn't run it for any numbers but instead looked at pass mark disk ratings, and it's arguably comparable to a Samsung EVO 980 PRO SSD. The RAM is also Samsung brand. After updating all the firmware and drivers, I ran some benchmarks. I decided not to adjust or modify any settings except for those in the Nvidia control panel. I ran benchmarks with Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Red Dead Redemption 2, and I got pleasant results. I'm a quality gamer, and so my benchmarks were performed with maximum quality settings. For Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I got just over 100 FPS on average. For Red Dead Redemption 2, I got 54 FPS on average. Despite this being lower than my standard of 60 FPS, the fact I got to 54 FPS on a laptop with no adjustments beyond Nvidia optimization is very pleasing. I know if I make adjustments, I can achieve a better framerate with a game like Red Dead Redemption 2 while maintaining excellent quality. Disclaimer: I do have Windows 11 installed, and so frame rates may vary by only a few frames on Windows 10. I do not play CS:GO, Overwatch, or Fortnite. I know they're designed to be played at a performance level, and I’m certain you’d get that performance with this laptop. Now, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 that can be found in this laptop isn't your big and hefty RTX 3070, but instead a laptop GPU form factor. This means there are some caveats, but you'll get some of the best performance a laptop can give you. The base wattage is 110-120W while gaming, but I believe this is without Dynamic Boost 2.0, which has been questionable. There are some safe overclocking settings in the Alienware Command Center if that’s your thing. You can also get into the BIOS but I didn’t do this—I’m fine with the default limitations. When the four fans start to kick in, they describe it as quiet, but it is not as quiet as they make it seem. And you cannot use Nvidia's WhisperMode 2.0. Instead you'd have to go into the command center and mess with the thermal profiles to achieve your preferred level. That said, this laptop does stay very cool thanks to four built-in fans. The fans don't let the CPU or GPU go above 80C, which was the highest I noticed, but I hardly see anything go over 70C. If the fans stay at 60% speed or lower, then it sounds good. Idle runs at around 40-45C. It's clear that the x17 R1 is clearly designed for performance over quality. But for me, the specs are enough to get the performance I want without sacrificing quality, or vice versa. This laptop performs very much to my satisfaction. But is this all worth the price? I'm certain that a good chunk of it is for the name. But if you prefer a laptop experience over that of a desktop, for whatever reasons you may have, this is definitely an option to consider.

Satisfied but not impressed
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Doing well after a few weeks of gaming. Sore points: loud fan, the delete key is tied to the function key which is awkward, only 2 USB ports so you will probably need a docking station.

Alienware x17 R1
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've gamed mostly on consoles but I needed something to take with me when I travel. This laptop really impressed me!! I can play most of all the new titles with ray tracing on around 60 fps or more I know it's expensive but it's just like anything else you get pay for!

Excellent Laptop
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I upgraded from a 10 year old Alienware 17" laptop to the x17. Wow! This machine is incredible. Quality is top notch. It feels like a top of the line laptop. Using Windows 11 on on this fast laptop is seamless. No issues at all. This should last me another 10 years.

I Love This Laptop!
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is wonderful! The customizable lights bring me great joy. It does tend to run a little hot when playing games, but I've no other issues outside of that. It's also quite big so finding a laptop bag a bit bigger than the actual laptop is needed.

Mixed feelings
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have mixed feelings about this laptop. The build is so so. I have issues with one of the speakers right out the box and all dell can do at first is tell you to factory reset it to fix it. Then make a repair order that I have to wait on someone to come do because they couldn’t get someone to come look at it within the week I bought it before I had to go offshore for work. Then they always offer deals with something right after you buy it
