You can use the troubleshooting mode on compatible remotes to help identify what’s causing the issue. When in troubleshooting mode, the LED on your remote changes color based on the problem.
To check if your remote is compatible, press the Alexa or microphone button on your remote. If the LED at the top of the remote flashes, troubleshooting mode is available. Otherwise, follow the troubleshooting steps at the end of the topic.

To turn on the troubleshooting mode for your remote:
Press the Rewind and Right buttons at the same time for three seconds.
Press the Menu button. The LED turns green to show that your remote is now in troubleshooting mode.
Press any button on your remote. The LED flashes with a specific color to help you identify the issue.
Red (slow blinking) – Low battery. Replace the batteries in your remote.
Red (fast blinking) – There’s a problem with your remote. Try to reset your Fire TV remote.
Orange – The remote isn’t paired with your Fire TV. Restart your Fire TV device and wait until "Cannot detect your remote" appears on-screen. Then, pair your Fire TV remote again by pressing and holding the Home button on the remote for 10 seconds. If you're pairing your remote to an Echo Show 15, follow the steps in Pair a Fire TV Remote with Your Echo Show 15.
White - Make sure that the Fire TV device is on. If the problem persists, restart your Fire TV device.
Blue – No issue with the remote. Try to restart your Fire TV device.
To deactivate the troubleshooting mode:
Press the Play/Pause and Up buttons at the same time for three seconds.
Then, press the Menu button to turn off troubleshooting mode.
Next, remove the batteries and place them back into the remote.
If the problem persists or your remote doesn't support troubleshooting mode:
Replace the batteries in your remote. For best performance, use alkaline batteries.
Move your remote closer to your device, within 10 feet (3 m).
Unplug your device from the power cord or adapter then plug it back in.

When I went into the store and asked the rep and he insisted this was the whole unit remote and transmitter. I said the box does not describe that nor the pictures have it on the box and he was like “I work here” so I ended up returning it after I got home and it was in fact just the remote.
