Yes it's 4K but it must use wifi.

The difference between the two generations is that one has the appearance of an Apple TV but has an Ethernet, SD and USB port, while the new generation is just a dongle that you must purchase a separate adapter for an Ethernet connection. The functionality is still amazing and the 4 stars is not due to the products performance but the lack of versatility compared to the 1st gen 4k TV
