The light also allows reading at night and does not bother my spouse. Only problem I do not like the case I purchased online and no covers at best buy or target

Great device with backlight

The backlight is a huge improvement over the previous kindle, but it's not an automatic backlit and must be adjusted by the user depending on the situation. If you're looking for an auto backlight, go for the Kindle Voyage.
