I needed a battery backup for tools in my woodshop. This worked well. Remember these are not a true UPS. Those would run off the device all the time, these kick in where the power fails.

Overall – Let me start by saying the APC Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is pretty much what I expect from APC – solid, dependable, and well-built to protect your PC or server without any issues. If you want some peace of mind with power fluctuations or outages, this unit does the job very well. It works exactly what you want a UPS to do. Packaging – Pretty straightforward. The unit is well protected in the box, and everything you need is included. You will need to let it charge first; however, it does that pretty fast. Touch and feel – It has some weight to it, which you’d expect with an internal battery. The build quality feels sturdy and durable. The front LCD screen is actually a nice touch – it’s nice to be able to see the load percentage and estimated runtime without having to open an app or network connections. Setup – Setup is very easy. Clearly marked battery vs. surge-only outlets, and if you want to hook it to your PC or NAS for monitoring, it’s pretty simple and straightforward – at least on the UPS side. Functionality – Here’s where it really depends on your use case. For me, running a PC and a small NAS, it works great. It handles that load without any issues and gives enough runtime to safely shut everything down when the power goes out. The AVR feature is also a plus – it smooths out small fluctuations without constantly kicking over to the battery. The only real drawback is the capacity. As I said, a PC and a small NAS are OK, but anything more than that, I would think you need a higher capacity than what this has. Bottomline – I really like this unit for what it is. It performs as expected, feels well-built, and protects my equipment from power damage. Just be aware of how long it will last if the power goes out – if you have the ability to communicate with the PC or NAS, and do a soft shutdown that would be great. If you need extended runtime, you want to step up to a higher capacity model. I would recommend this, however, make sure it meets your needs and application first

The APC Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is a powerful UPS, uninterruptible power supply, that runs my network when the power goes out. It keeps me online for three hours. My fiber modem and router are never offline so WiFi and Ethernet all over the house continue to work. I can also plug my phone charger into the UPS and keep my phone charged. There is also surge protection built in as well as automatic voltage regulation which protect my equipment. There is a USB to Ethernet cable supplied to connect my computer to the data port on the UPS and available PowerChute software that can automatically save files to protect from data loss when the power goes out. The size is compact to fit in smaller spaces. I was able to set it on my shelf. There is an LCD screen that displays how much time is left before the battery runs down and also when it recharges how long before the battery is back to full power. There are eight outlets total with four for battery backup and four for surge suppression only. Overall this backup power supply performs extremely well balanced with cost.

    Solid backup UPS

This APC is for mid to small computers or other IT devices. It has the standard APC LCD screen and three buttons to control the functions and display of the device. It's not to large or heavy. It has 8 plugs total, 4 connected to the battery backup and 4 that are just surge protectors. There is also a data port on the back for connecting the UPS to your computer/NAS/Router etc. A wiring fault indicator light and circuit break reset round out the functions on the back of the unit. To have battery work, you turn over the unit, slide the battery cover door off and connect the positive wire, red, to the positive plug on the battery. A battery usually lasts 3-5 years in the ones I have owned. Then you can decide if it's worth buying another battery or a whole new unit depending on price. With the battery connected and then the unit plugged into a wall socket your UPS is ready to work. The screen will allow you to cycle through input voltage, load, time remaining, etc. Connecting the UPS to a computer gives you full control over the device. Load the APC power chute software on a PC, power it from the battery side of the UPS and you have all the information on you screen. You can see voltage, loads, time remaining etc. You can easily set when the UPS should shutdown, time remaining or time from loss of power. It will monitor when power outages occur, under/over voltage, and electrical noise. If you put in your power cost, it will estimate the cost of running the devices it backs up. Time remaining on the UPS and watts used per day are also shown. The UPS condition, and self-testing are all easily done from the software. You can set the alarm, voltage parameters, and notifications. Powerchute works well to setup and monitor the UPS. You don't have to use the front of the device at all. You can access the most of the functions through the buttons on the device. You can put it in any location and still monitor what it's doing through the serial to USB cable. I used this UPS to backup my ONT, modem, and few other devices I'd want to keep going for a bit if the power goes out. For a small load I have over an hour of run time. UPS's aren't just for a computers. My IO Safe/Synology NAS also saw the UPS with no issues. APC has built another solid UPS, easy to setup and protect your gear until a power shutdown, or keep your gear going for a bit longer. For short power outages, you'll never realize one hit for the devices connected to it.
