Peace of mind for power outages
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As a long-time user of APC’s backup battery products, I was excited to get my hands on the new Back-UPS Pro BN1050M mini-tower model. It provides all of the reliable features I’m accustomed to having, as well as one that my older model did not have: a display screen. Getting started is easy. After unboxing, you’ll notice the big yellow sticker advising you that the battery is not yet connected. To do so, simply slide open the battery door, connect the pink wire, then close the door. As a bonus, I got to see a little spark as the wire’s metal got close to the connector. That told me that the battery already had a charge. To start using the UPS, simply choose what to plug in to the 8 provided outlets. While all of the outlets are protected from surges, only 4 of them have battery backup. You’ll want to make sure that the things you’ll need most during a power outage are connected to the outlets with battery backup. The outlets are nicely spaced, and I had no trouble connecting all my devices. At its core, the BN1050M is a battery and surge protector, but a smart one. In addition to protecting your devices from dangerous electricity spikes, it also regulates the power output so that it’s steady and “clean”. If the power goes out, it can provide enough power to safely shut everything down without losing anything you’ve been working on. The built-in display shows things like how much power is being put out, charge level of the battery, and load being pulled by the connected devices. When I tested the unit by pulling the plug, it immediately notified me with a loud beep that I was on battery power. These beeps continue every 20 seconds or so to remind you. The LED shows an estimate of how much time is left before the battery runs out. Both the display and the alarm can be turned of if you like. Initially, the display showed a pretty impressive number of more than 90 minutes, but it quickly scaled down until it settled in around 35 minutes. That was based on a laptop and two 4K monitors plugged in. The estimate ended up being pretty accurate, as I did indeed get to keep working for more than 30 minutes, and I still had some power to spare. APC estimates that you can run off battery power for more than 3.5 hours if all you need is your internet router and modem. In a pinch, that could be a good way to go. The BN1050M also includes a feature that I thought was a great idea, although I did not test it. In the box there is also a cable with an ethernet plug on one end and USB-A plug on the other. When paired with the Powerchute app on a desktop computer, it can safely shut down a desktop computer without human intervention when a power outage is detected. This would be very useful for a desktop that runs unattended throughout the day, but that’s not my use case. Having a battery backup gives peace of mind to know that even if the power goes out, you’ll be able to safely shut down without losing your work. Even if you only use it to provide internet during an outage, your phones and other mobile devices can keep working for hours, and maybe not miss a beat. The Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is a compact unit that is thoughtfully designed and does what it’s supposed to do. You can rest easy knowing that you’ll be prepared for a temporary power outage. I know I do.

Must have if working from home
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This review is on an APC - Back-UPS Pro BN1050M - Black. If you work from home, then you need a battery backup. At some point you will loose power and then the work you was doing. When that power goes out anything you were typing up or creating will be possibly lost. Put your mind at ease with this UPS. I connect to multiple applications from home to my employer. If I loose connection then I have to bother with signing back into everything. This UPS will save me the headache, especially if the outage was for just a few minutes. I was surprised how heavy it is for its size but not heavy enough to move around nor will it get kicked around by accident. It has a large enough display that I can read from my chair while it is on the floor. It has 3 buttons that can turn the alarm sound off/on, power on/off, and to light up the display panel. The display can also be turned on by the software. Setup was easy. Just pull the battery out and connect one terminal. It has four battery backup plugs and four surge protected plugs. It has a light that will indicate if your home wiring is bad. Also has a cord to connect by USB to your computer for a web based UI. Installing the PowerChute software was easy. It operates under your web browser. When I first tried to open the link, it sent me to a localhost that said unsecured website. I don't really like it when I get these messages but I know it is localhost so I just clicked on proceed button on the page and it took me to login. Once logged in, there is a lot of information at hand about the battery. You can run a self diag test. Setup timed shutdown parameters including using special commands. Check for updates. Energy reports and logs. Get event E-mails. You can also log in while being away and shutdown the computer remotely.

The Usual Quiet APC Power Backup/Surge
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I began using strictly APC products years ago when a similar brand let me down several times and I wasn't happy about the results at all. Never a problem with an APC unit. This 1050VA 600 watt unit is a little larger than the usual ones you might use under a desk to keep your computer and modem/router up and running during a power blip or short outage. Those events are very common in Florida so this thing is a must. I have a bigger APC unit to power and protect my networking equipment so things like security cameras can stay up and running for a while during outages. This was very simple to set up (the usual sticker removal and the attaching of the positive power cable to the internal battery) and connecting the power cords to either the power/surge outlets or just surge. Of course, you devote the power backup outlets to things that you want to stay on--PC etc. It has 4 outlets of each kind. It also has a display that shows the voltage, remaining battery and load percentage. You can't hear any noise or feel any heat out of it, and it also has a mute button for the alarm audio. It doesn't take up a lot of room, and is invaluable for a home office.

Not worth the hassle
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It frequently will power back on after being turned off. I have to remove the battery and let it sit for roughly 5 minutes and maybe it will turn back on. Happened just a few days after the store's return window. It may be related to this; the contacts for the battery are extremely stressed when connected and the battery is fit back in the body of the unit. I wouldn't recommend. I will need to contact the manufacturer for any assistance.

Solid UPS with well made software integration
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. While many homes have shifted to laptops with their own internal batteries, we’ve also become dependent on the internet, even to report power problems. APC’s 1050 backup will give you 90-120 minutes run time for your router and other internet equipment, depending on your individual set up. I have two network hard drives, a switch, a router, and an Amazon box drawing current, and the backup indicates 90 minutes. APC is a long established brand in battery backup boxes. The Back UPS 1050 extends that line with an energy efficient design and a few nice extras. It has 8 widely spaced plugs which fit smaller transformers next to each other. 4 ports are battery backed with the other 4 having only surge protection. The battery backed ports also have circuitry to protect against undervoltage and overvoltage coming through your line. One neat feature is the power meter. Tapping the information button will show you bits of operating status, including the total draw through the backup unit and the estimated run time left. This can help you decide which devices are battery backed up. I found out, for example, that my LED TV uses ~200W when running vs 5W when it’s off. That translates to a run time of 10 minutes of usage vs 90 minutes with only my internet routers (located behind the TV) pulling down juice. Clearly, it made sense to switch the TV to a surge outlet with that kind of draw. The additional ports give extra protection in today’s multi-device world. In addition to power, this will protect against surges from cable and ethernet. I’m not sure the value of the ethernet protection as its not marked with a speed rating (i.e. Gigabit). I use the cable protection though and there’s no noticeable loss of signal. Each Back-UPS also supports APC’s Power Cute shut down technology. You can connect your PC to the Back-UPS with a proprietary USB-A cable. After installing the software, your PC will properly shut down in the event of an extended power failure. The software can be set to maximize battery availability or maximize time on. The battery capacity could be useful if you experience frequent power outages (i.e. during a thunderstorm) as it will take some time for the battery to re-charge after an outage. To test it, I unplugged the unit from the wall to see what would happen. After 5 minutes (based on the settings I chose), my PC started to shut down just as if I’d manually put it into hibernation. After plugging in again, I restarted the PC and my work was right where I’d left off! It’s a great device to ensure you don’t accidentally lose files, even if you walk away at the wrong time! This is a well designed unit from a well known brand that provides great long term support. Batteries for 10 year old units are still available for sale from the company, suggesting they’ll be supporting this unit for many years to come.

No better way to protect your electronics
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very happy and satisfied with the performance of the APC Back-UPS Pro Power Protection. If you are in an area with an unstable power grid, with changes in the electricity surge and you have expensive but sensitive electronics in your house, this is probably one investment that you should consider. Two main functions: .- Battery, for keeping your electronics like your modem or TV running when power is gone. This could allow you to safely close your work until the power is back. .- Surge protection. In my opinion, this is the real value of APC UPS, to protect my big screen TV from the house in the mountains where the variability of a power surge is so unreliable. It’s clear that we are surrounded by more electronic devices but we don’t always think that they are built for the power in our cities. The APC Back-UPS is compact, while a bit heavy, that can discretely fit in the TV stand under your big screen. I recognize that I think that is too compact sometimes because with eight outlets (four with battery support) and four just with surge protection sometimes is complicated to use all at the same time. A bit crowded, if the power adapter is big (like most of your phone chargers) you could not use it all at the same time. I like the information displayed on the screen, very intuitive and easy to read. How charged the battery is and the remaining time available are key for you to decide how to move forward and how long your activity can run before the battery is over. A final positive element that should be reinforced because peace of mind for the buyer, the manufacturer is putting its money into the product offering a 3 years guarantee and up to $250.000 guarantee for potential equipment damaged if the protection failed. Only a confident manufacturer will do it. I am very happy with the equipment and strongly recommend it.

Five Hours of Backup Time
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have wanted a backup unit for my internet connection, computer etc. Having worked in the IT world I was accustomed to having an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) for the servers. First thing of course is always size. This unit is 12” long, 3 ¾” wide and 7 1/2” tall. The power cord has a few bends but my very unscientific measurement came out at 5’ 8” so it’s probably a 6’ power cord. I expected it to be a like a mini tower, think old desktop computer. Due to the location of the power cable it has to sit so that it is longer than it is tall. Not an issue, just not what I was expecting. The UPS has some weight to it. I was able to carry it into the house but did have to put it on the ground while I unlocked the door, too heavy to hold and unlock the door. There isn’t much to setup, open the door, plug the battery cable into the battery and close the door. Sounds simple enough. It took me a bit to figure out how to get the battery back in the case until I figured out I had the unit upside down! Hint, the “APC” near the battery door should not be upside down. Two cables plug in. I could tell the red cable was plugged in successfully; however the white connection was a bit tricky. I was listening for a “snap” to be sure it was plugged in correctly. No sound. The battery cables are short and there isn’t a lot of space so it was difficult to get my fingers in there to connect. I guessed the cables were secure and went ahead and plugged in the UPS and turned it on. Took it a few seconds and it was on-line. One really great feature is the Building Wiring Fault Indicator. If the wiring for the outlet has any issues a red light will light up in the back of the unit where the power plugs are. Where I wanted to put this unit the red light came on. When I moved the UPS to another area of the house it worked and no red light. Directions say to contact an electrician and not to use the UPS if the red light is on. Now I know there is an issue with the outlet in my office! Fully charged mine says it will run for 312 minutes so a little over five hours. Plenty of time to finish up any work on the computer, print anything required and shutdown during a power outage. The electric company where I am does rolling blackouts in the summer when it’s too hot so this battery backup is perfect for my needs. There are eight power connections and one USB/serial port. There are eight power plugs. Important to note that only the four on the left side provide power during a power outage although all eight provide surge protection.

Good Value, a Few Small Annoyances
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I work from home and staying online during power outages is critical. I do have a generator for long-term outages, but even a brief blip could cost me in lost work, plus it takes 10 to 15 minutes for everything to reboot and come back online. The laptop that I normally work on has its own battery, so I just needed to support my network and server equipment. This consists of a low-profile Windows server, a 4-drive NAS storage box, a cable modem, a 16-port switch, and a router. I also have a DVR with 8 security cameras that I wanted to power as well. Total power draw is around 100 watts, and I only need the UPS to run for 5 to 10 minutes until the generator comes fully online. This APC Back-UPS Pro 1050VA looked to be a good option so I ordered it. The unit itself is about the size of a very low-profile shoe box. It comes with the internal battery disconnected and the attached label show how to open the case to plug it in. I have used many different UPSs over the years, so I am familiar with the process, yet this one was still challenging. The wiring to connect to the battery was not very flexible, and it was short. To add to the challenge, the connectors were difficult to line up with the battery terminals. It seemed to be far more difficult than necessary to connect the battery. Luckily this is not a regular task and only needs to be done with the initial setup, and then every few years when the battery has to be replaced. I like the LED display screen. It can be used to configure the UPS for various options like a silent alarm, acceptable voltage ranges, etc. It can display the current power draw in watts, expected runtime, as well as percentage of capacity. With my system typically drawing right under 100w, it shows a 17% capacity with an estimated 40-minute runtime on a fully-charged battery. The unit is quiet. It makes no noise until the AC power is dropped, then there is a click and a hum from the transformer. There is no cooling fan. Speaking of a power outage, that 40-minute runtime estimate immediately drops to 30 minutes when the plug is pulled. Even with that inaccuracy, it’s still plenty of time for the generator to kick in. On thing missing on this UPS are USB ports. There is an RJ-45 jack that is used for proprietary cable that plugs into a computer’s USB post so that the UPS can be monitored using the PowerChute software (a free download). There are no USB ports for powering low- voltage devices. That would have been a nice option as I have a few things that have to use AC adapters. There are 8 AC outlets on the back, 4 of which are just surged protected, so only 4 are powered during an outage. In my case, I have a wall-mounted outlet strip to power all of my equipment, so I only need one battery-powered outlet. Overall, this APC Back-UPS Pro 1050VA is well-made and does what I need. The price is competitive and the unit is about as compact as it comes for this output level. If the battery had not been so difficult to connect and if it had a couple of USB power ports, I’d have given it a full 5-star rating. Even so, I do recommend this UPS.

Posted .Hello,
We value our customers and we are extremely sorry about this inconvenience.
The reason for the APC - Back-UPS Pro 1050VA causing a drop in the Wifi router could be due to several factors. One possible reason is that the equipment connected to the wrong outlets on the Back-UPS product, which do not provide backup power. Another reason could be capacity overload, where the total wattage of the equipment exceeds the maximum wattage supported by the battery backup outlets. Additionally, the circuit breaker on the UPS may have tripped due to a severe overload. It is also possible that the UPS has exhausted its available battery power or that the connected equipment does not accept the stepped-approximated sine wave output of the UPS. Another potential reason could be a faulty power supply in the equipment or the absence of APC management software when a communication cable is attached. If none of these reasons apply, the UPS itself may be faulty.
We are encouraging you to contact our Tech Support team through chat or call us at 1-800-800-4272. We will make sure we resolve this for you.

Perfect. Not too big and works like a charm!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The APC - Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is an absolute beast of a UPS. So far it has worked tremendously and without fail. I currently have connected my gaming PC with four monitors to it and have yet have a problem. One of my favorite features is that I am able to see the amount of load that I am placing on the unit itself, and even while gaming, it still does not show that I am at max capacity. Ironically, I have only had to test this unit as a test, but not use it for its intended purpose yet, which is ironic considering how many power outages we have in our area. Prior to having this item, I was having power outages and surge quite often, but after having this, granted, it has only been a month, we have been outage free. Thankfully, of course. When receiving the item, make sure to follow the instructions that come with it very carefully, then connect your components, and you will be ready to rock and roll. Don’t be that person who does not connect the battery. I think we have all done that at some point in our lives with one of these.

Big and Boring UPS That Does It's Job
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having a surge protector for electronics is the bare minimum to ensure their safe operation, but if you want to step up to a better solution that offers not only protection but uninterruptible power as well, then you’re going to be looking at a UPS or an uninterruptible power supply. That’s where a product like the APC Back-UPS Pro BN1050M comes in. The APC Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is a pretty basic UPS unit with 4 battery backup outlets and 4 surge-protected-only outlets. Rated at 600 watts this unit will run with a full load for up to 2 minutes which is plenty long to use the PowerChute software to shut down your PC and monitor when a power outage happens. On top of being able to handle your large electronics, like a computer or laptop, you can also use the Back-UPS 1050 to power your internet modem and wireless router for a much longer period of time. This ensures that during an outage you can still have battery-powered wireless devices connected to the internet, which is awesome. You can expect the unit to power a modem and router for about 3 hours. The unit also comes with hot-swappable batteries, which is awesome for those mission-critical servers or other important devices that require as much uptime as possible. The unit also comes with an easy-to-read LCD display that will give you relevant information about your load, runtime, etc. The other great feature of a UPS like this one over just a regular surge protector is AVR or Automatic Voltage Regulation. This feature will compensate for low voltage or minimize a voltage spike on the fly and protect the equipment connected to the unit. These little spikes and dips in voltage cause wear and tear on the power supply units of sensitive electronics, so this feature is very handy to have. Overall the APC Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is an unassuming UPS that does everything it claims to do, without any issues and without making any noise unless it needs a battery replacement or detects a voltage variation.

Another great UPS from APC!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've always wanted to get an UPS for my computers and equipment to help prevent power losses and spikes from outages or other power issues, and the APC Back-UPS Pro model BN1050M has been a great option for me and my power needs. I have two computers that I switch between, a Mac Mini and an extremely power hungry AlienWare laptop, and even if I have both of these computers and their accessories running the Back-UPS Pro is more than capable of powering these devices during a power loss for more than an hour. I was worried that due to the small size of this unit that I would be near to the max use of this units capacity and that I wouldn't have much time to shut down my systems if there was a power outage, but that is not at all the case with this, I am barely using 50% of the capacity with several devices connected at the same time. While small this unit is fairly bulky and I think due to the weight of the battery it helps give it quite a large capacity compared to it's relatively small size. The screen on this device gives some useful information in regards to the battery and wether or not the unit is currently running on battery or from the wall. The nice thing is that the screen will stay off unless you press the button to view it or if something is going on that needs your attention, so if you have this in your room or somewhere else where light is a concern this is not a concern. I've been really impressed and happy with this UPS and I especially like the fact that there is software for the PC that allows you to see the battery stats and the UPS battery stats show up natively on the Mac.

A necessary device to help protect your gizmos.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We get a lot of power outages and surges in my area. Over time, a number of my electronics were damaged as a result, and regular power strips that offer “surge protection” did not always protect these items. That’s where a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) like the APC 1050VA comes in. Basically, you charge the UPS up and keep it plugged in, and you then plug in whatever devices you want to protect from surges and outages into the battery backup side of the UPS. Your devices will basically be running directly from the UPS, as it continuously recharges itself from you’re home outlet. This way if there’s an outage or surge, your plugged-in devices will continue to run uninterrupted from the UPS power. The amount of time will vary depending on the draw your device takes from the UPS. It can be a few minutes for a desktop and monitor setup to several hours for things like a modem or security camera hub, with the maximum for this one to be generally around 3.5 hours. Some people even use these devices for things like CPAP machines, but I would suggest buying the largest capacity version of a UPS for that for the best runtime on anything like that. In the case of the 1050VA model, you get four outlets for battery backup and surge protection, and four outlets that are surge protection only, protecting at 1103 joules. There’s also a data port and circuit breaker reset button in case a surge trips the breaker in the device. On the front, you have a digital display showing your remaining power percentage, as well as three buttons for Power, Display on/off, and mute, to mute the beeping alarm that goes off when your power is off, and only the UPS is running on it’s own. There is auto shutdown software that can be downloaded so if you prefer, you can connect your computer to the UPS and have it shut down automatically if the UPS sends it a signal the power is out. Total power for this model is 1050 volt-amperes, which is more than enough for most people, but other models that handle more, or less, power are available at varying price points. At just under 16 pounds this isn’t a light device, but it’s not huge physically. It will fit easily on a sturdy desktop area, the floor, etc. These do not use lithium-ion batteries, but instead use sealed lead-acid batteries. These types of batteries FYI, are generally a lot safer than lithium based batteries. I’ve found these devices to last between 2 to 5 years, but it depends widely on how many surges and outages you have. I’ve been using UPS devices for years and swear by them. They’ve saved me a lot of headaches and saved my data when working in the past on my computer and the frequent outages hit around me. I consider these to be a necessary device in many households, and the APC 1050VA is one of the better ones I’ve used so far. I would definitely recommend.

Compact footprint and clear screen
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The APC Back-UPS Pro BN1050M is the ultimate solution for keeping you up and running during brief power outages or to give you the peace of mind that your sensitive computer and networking equipment is safe and sound behind this relatively compact UPS. I replaced an aging Amazon Basics 850VA UPS from 2017 with this APC 1050VA unit and I am shocked by how much smaller it is! The vertical orientation versus horizontal on the floor is a massive space saving design and the overall size is a least 50% smaller but with the same number of protected and UPS outlets between the two. The APC Back-UPS Pro also features a hand screen that shows you the battery remaining, usage, and other important information about your UPS without requiring it be connected to your computer via USB, which it also offers for a richer set of options to maneuver around with your mouse. Overall, this is an incredible option to go with to protect your modem, router, and computer to keep them all safe from power surges and power outages, giving you more than enough time to safely save and shutdown without fear of data loss!

Ol' reliable
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After being one of "those" people who never understood the importance of battery backup when you have a surge protector, I've been a fan since I've adopted them. I've used a larger (and much older) version of this one to keep my gaming machine from crashing during any sort of power outage. Long enough for me to even be able to wrap up a twitch stream. I was using a CyberPower backup for a little while to keep my network closet alive during power outages but I had noticed a few all out shutdowns over the year or so of using that one. Like I had to power cycle the whole battery backup to get everything back online. It only happened a 2 or 3 times but it was confusing enough to be frustrating. Now I'm using this 1050 in the network closet. Definitely haven't tested it long enough to make sure there are no more of those power faults but if this is as reliable as my trusty old 1350 APC then I feel confident it'll be ok. Setup is easy. It's a battery backup. Standard stuff. Open the battery container and connect the red terminal before anything. Peel off stickers and plug your stuff in. My only gripe about this unit is it's size. It's nice that it's small but it being so small means that it doesn't have extra space between the outlets on the back to accommodate larger power bricks. I had to use an extension cord for my router and modem since they blocked other outlets. The battery backup and surge only sides each come with 4 outlets that are right next to each other so unless they're simple power plugs and not bulky bricks you are going to need some extensions to plug everything in. Other than that little hiccup, everything works great so far. The USB connection to my linux server worked great right away after installing the software (which only took a really quick google to find). I can probably use that connection for some automation that will let me shut down the server properly when the battery level gets a little low but I haven't messed around with it yet. The screen and button controls are pretty standard. If you've used any UPS in the past, you'll understand these. All the standard info is available like input voltage, output wattage, and time remaining on battery. Overall, this is an uninterruptible power supply. APC has (in my personal experience) been very reliable. There's not much else to say here. If you're in the market for a power supply, do some math to figure out how much power you need (and how long you need to keep your systems alive) and if you think 1050 is enough, pick this one up.

Simply beyond simplistic and very easy to use.

I used to own a much smaller back up battery, also made by APC, that was almost half the size and back-up capability of my new 1050va / 600 Watts, but it stopped working about a year ago. I am much more excited and pleased with this back-up battery because it offers me much more in way of useful features. The 1050 va offers power and also protects your connected electronics during power outages. I truly appreciate the improvements and features which allow for more control of the back-up battery and set-up easy. Additionally, the 1050 va is really straight forward in terms of how you set it up, what it provides and where and what you can and should connect to it. It truly is connect, plug and play. I was able to set my system up in just a few minutes. It actually took me longer to read the instructions and safety precautions then to set it up. It has with 8 power outlets, which is four more than my previous back-up battery. It has a large LCD display which keeps me informed of what’s going on with the status of the battery at all times. For convenience, theres a push button circuit breaker that allows you to easily recover from overloads. It has a replaceable battery (my last back-up battery died and I had to throw it away because the battery wasn’t replaceable. Currently I have my internet router and other device connected along with a couple other important devices that I may need during a power outage. I also have my security cameras base and accompanying devices so that if someone attempts to cut my power to disarm my security camera, my 1050 va back-up battery can provide up to an hour and a half of power and security until the power is restored. Overall, I am pleased with my APC Back-UPS battery and the 3-year warranty that covers the unit and the battery along with other connected devices, if they are damaged. I would purchase this again and recommend it to family and friends.
