Great UPS if a bit noisy

The APC BN1350M2 is APC’s mid-range high output UPS. I’ve been a long time APC customer, and believer in UPSs. In fact I have probably about 5 around the house. I like them especially to keep critical infrastructure online for internet (modem, router, switch). UPSs are important if you want to keep the kids busy when the power is out. A unit like the BN1350M2 should give a modem and router about 2 hours of auxiliary power. Of course the BN1350M2 is a 1350VA/810 watt unit, so it can power a lot more than a modem/router. Keep in mind that the 810 watt is a maximum rating, so it cannot be exceeded under load. That said, one of the drivers for me for this UPS was my new desktop computer build. I’m running an overclocked 7820x @ 4.6GHz, and it can pull 300 watts from the wall loaded alone. Add in a fully loaded GPU, and other components, I’ve seen 500w continuous load. In fact, I was tweaking my configuration when a constant beeping would occur under a stress test. At first I thought it was my computer, but I eventually realized it was my old 550va UPS. I was exceeding it’s rating and it was warning me of the overload. The APC BN1350M2 is much more powerful and capable than that bargain 550va that I had before. In fact, runtime is estimated around 50 minutes with my computer at idle (about 100w load). This is excellent for me, as I like to avoid hard shutdowns and keep my PC running all the time. I noticed no weird noises or behavior when running on battery. The BN1350M2 has a stepped sine wave which appears to come close enough to a true sine wave to avoid any pitfalls of cheaper square wave designs. If you’re lost here, it's essentially how the UPS reproduces the AC power’s ‘A’ (alternating) behavior. Some older UPS’s use a square wave, which can stress certain types of electronics. There are a total of 10 outlets, with 6 being battery backup and the other 4 being surge only. This is a great configuration as many models only provide 3 or 4 battery outlets. Of course there’s more to the UPS than just battery/load capabilities. My favorite is the LCD, which provide not only runtime information, but direct load (how many watts/percentage of load), battery level, input voltage/frequency, and general status. The UPS software is also helpful, which connects over USB. While Powerchute personal edition hasn’t seen a major update for over a half decade, the software is more than adequate for simple usage, and provides details like estimated cost, and carbon emissions. It can provide power usage history, so for instance it helped illuminate for me that my MESH overclock was causing almost 20w of idle power usage. All in all the UPS’s info/software is top notch. One of my favorite features of this UPS is the mute switch. I can’t tell you how annoying it is to have battery backups that wake up the entire house in the middle of the night. It was fine when it was just my wife and I, but with 2 small kids I dread a mid-night power outage. Being able to mute the beeper is a great feature that was overlooked for years. Other features that are important here are AVR (automatic voltage regulation), which helps correct dirty power - in the case of say a brown out. APFC compatibility - which means that active PFC power supplied keep running during the transition between line and battery. Most modern power supplies in computers are active PFC, so this is a pretty important detail. Another cool feature is hot-swappable batteries, which means you don’t need to power everything off just to replace the battery. I also assume this means that the UPS won’t just kill everything when the battery needs to be replaced. I had an older model that when the battery got old and died it powered off my home server repeatedly until the battery finally died completely. Last time I buy that brand. Rounding out the capabilities are gigabit ethernet protection, coaxial protection, ground fault LED, and TVSS ground. Another great feature is a USB-A and USB-C port that provide up to 15w of power (5V3A - this is combined). This is useful since it operates even on battery. Think of it this way: the power goes out and your phone is at 20% battery. You could reduce the load on the UPS and actually use this as a giant phone charger, giving you time to perhaps charge your phone up and even give that battery bank you forgot you had a charge to carry you on in the midst of the blackout. Now you could also use it to charge a device while not on battery - but this brings me to my next point: While this is a desktop UPS, I don’t recommend putting it on a desk. The reason isn’t because the display isn’t useful, but rather (at least my unit) has a high pitch noise associated with it. Apparently this is a common occurrence with APC UPS’s electrical design. Some exhibit this noise more than others. I’ve honestly never noticed on my other UPS’s, but they live under desks, and behind devices. I tried with this one on my desk, but I found the noise distracting. This issue varies by device, but it seems like it’s pretty common. You might not even be able to hear the frequency noises, but if you’re under 30 you’re probably a good candidate to be annoyed. Overall the BN1350M2 is a great device. The electrical noises are the biggest annoyance, but when installed under my desk I can’t hear them. The runtime, software, and features of this UPS warrant its price premium, but it’s still disappointing that the electrical design isn’t filtered enough to prevent these. Overall the capacity is great, and APCs battery programs and general quality are great reasons to get this unit.

So far, I've always been lucky when there was a power hit, I wasn't actively using the computer. I would turn the computer back on and my drives were still OK and I didn't lose anything. Some of my unfortunate friends and clients haven't been so lucky as they were working on their computers and not only lost the documents they spent hours working on but a few had their hard drives trashed due to it writing to the drive at the time of the hit. I figured that could happen to me so I decided it was time to get a UPS. As we use APC UPS's at work, I know they have been around forever and their products can be trusted. This unit, the Back-UPS Pro 1350VA can handle a lot of devices at the same time. There are 5 battery backed up outlets with surge protection as well as 5 surge protected outlets as well. There is Ethernet surge protection to go between your cable modem and router and a USB and Serial Data port that lets you connect to your computer and when using the PowerChute software (Windows Only) it will automatically save your work before shutting down your PC. When power comes back, it will restart your PC. There are even 2 USB jacks on the front of the device to let you charge your cell phones and can even charge them when the device is running on battery. If you ever had a long blackout, you could charge your phone multiple times. The display gives you a lot of information such as the battery and load capacity, error messages such as overloading the device and it will even let you know when it's time to replace the batteries. Speaking of batteries, there are 2 12V batteries that are easy to replace, just slide the panel off the side, disconnect the red and black wires pull the batteries out and replace them with new ones. If you don't have a UPS, I would suggest you get one now as you never know when power will

I have owned many backups and this is the best battery backup I have ever used, period! The amount of power this packs is insane. After using this for 3 weeks, it was tested hard during a storm with many outages. All my computer products stayed working with each flicker and outage, I kept on working without issue. The APC backup has a built in surge protector for the items that do not need power but has plenty of plugs for items that do. All 3 screens stayed lit and my PC with lots of need for power stayed running the entire 43 minutes the power was out the 3rd time after 2 flickers. The ease of installation is amazing and is such a small size compared to my last backup made by another brand. I also tested how long I could run a 65" Samsung 4k tv, D link router, Roku and the modem with the unit unplugged, 51 minutes, yes 51! This is by far the best backup for the money, I plan on buying another for my kids computers for school.

Protect your equipment from power outages

The Back-UPS Pro 1350VA Battery Back-Up System by APC is a small and compact uninterruptible power supply that can help keep your important electronics such as a desktop PC to smaller electronics like your internet modem, router, and pretty much anything else that you would like to keep running during a blackout or brownouts. The Back-UPS Pro 1350VA Battery Back-Up System has a total of 10 outlets, 6 of them are connected to the battery backup and the other 4 are "Surge" only outlets which are not connected to the battery backup. The only issue I have with the outlets in their placement on the Battery Back-Up System. If you need to connect multiple devices that have a brick style connector, you will lose access to an outlet. A simple fix for this, is to purchase an extension or raised adapter that allows you to connect your device into the outlet without blocking the nearby outlets. Your mileage will vary with how long the Battery Back-Up System will last you during a blackout. If you are pushing against the upper limit of the 810W of power, you will get only a few minutes to safely power down your equipment. Whereas if you have a few device that only use about 300W of power, you should have a few hours of run time from the Battery Back-Up System. Overall, a great product from APC which keeps your expensive or important equipment up and running while protecting it from unexpected drops in power.

6 battery backup outlets & long runtime

I needed a name brand UPS with 6 battery backup outlets & long runtime with same day local pickup (TrippLite 1500VA died) and this APC unit fit the bill. It is running a router, 2 data modems, 1 voice modem, and two switches and the estimated runtime is 55mins. There is also a phone system plugged into the surge protector that has its own backup battery. This has been in use for one month and we have no problems or complaints. The setup was quick and easy and the device is low profile with a nice LCD. It is important to note for the homewoner that this unit makes a very light chirping noise constantly. Ours is located in a locked equipment room so this doesn't bother anyone but it could be a dealbreaker in a living room or under your desk.

    Expecting the best

We’ve used an APC battery backup for our computer for years. I never worry about the home office computer and peripherals. I know they are protected from power surges and we have ample time to shut down safely. We ordered this APC Pro for a very different use. We live in rural SC where cell coverage is not good. A while back we got a WeBoost cell phone booster that made our cell phone actually useable here at home. However,we are prone to power outages and decided battery backup could be a life saver in the event of power loss. The APC Pro was well packaged fairily sleek even though it is very heavy. The setup instructions weren’t particularly helpful for our application since we won’t be connecting a computer. We found the best placement in our den and simply plugged in the weBoost. Now we feel secure that this unit will protect the booster from power surges, but more importantly give us a few hours of ability to make cell calls in the event we lose power. I’m guessing we will put it to use as Hurricane Florence barrels toward us tonight! We maybe without power for days. That will be a real test of our APC.

I was provided this unit for review, and it completely met my expectations. I use two older, less powerful APC uninterruptible power supplies regularly at home. They've worked reliably during power outages, and are both well supported out-of-the-box by the desktops and home servers I've used them with. The Back-UPS 1350VA raise the bar in terms of features (power output and number of outlets for connected devices, in addition to a nice information display) while retaining the reliability and ease of connection. A UPS is not a glamorous device, but is expected to be reliable. APC's products have a solid reputation in my mind, and this 1350VA model has given me no reason to expect otherwise. It was easy to get running, and swap in place of a slightly older (and weaker) APC model that I use to help safeguard my home NAS server. No complaints from me here. In order to placer a higher load on the system, I actually ran two 3D printers from it as well, and unplugged the UPS in the middle of testing. The 1350VA had absolutely no issue running the printers, and neither one missed a beat. The informative LCD display was quite nice for monitoring remaining time and instantaneous power draw figures. If you're considering a UPS to help safeguard your electronics and/or data, I have no qualms about recommending an APC product.

Works great to keep me streaming on Twitch

This UPS has actually been very useful lately. Storms and other various weather issues at our newly purchased home has resulted in a few brownouts over the last couple of weeks. I have a smaller UPS connected to my cable modem, router and switch to keep the internet up and running during power outages. I connected this new UPS to my gaming machine that I use to stream on Twitch and it has kicked in and saved the day more than once already while I was streaming. Stream continued. All was good. I was happy. I haven't had any longer outages but real world usage for me wouldn't really ever use that. Any lengthy power outage would enable me plenty of time to wrap things up and shut everything down before issues arise. Setup is obviously straight forward. The outlets for just plain surge protection vs. battery backup are very well labeled. The screen is very nice and informative. It can toggle itself on and off only when you want to see it or you can force it to stay on. I'm pretty happy with everything. Overall, this just does that job it's supposed to. I believe uninterruptible power supplies are one of those things you don't really skimp on because you need them to work in an emergency. This has done that job so I'd recommend it if you have the budget for it.

I have really been wanting to get a battery backup for my home internet devices but have been reluctant to pull the trigger. When I saw this model I was convinced due to all of its features. The first thing I liked was how many outlets this had. I also liked how may watts it put out while running on battery. Once I unpacked this I had to connect the battery via a connector they leave unplugged in shipping. Very easy. Then I plugged in my Comcast modem, d link router, Xfinity home router, and Arlo Hub. I then unplugged the battery backup and watched as all of my home communication didn't miss a beat! My internet and home security devices all up and running. Fantastic! This will help me during power outages in the summer and when I do home improvement projects where I open my breakers to kill power. This battery backup also offers surge protection which is an added plus. Love this ❤

This is a simple device, but does what its designed to do well. This unit has good looks, and a very clear screen with different options to display including battery load, incoming or outgoing volts, runtime left on battery power etc. I LOVE that it has 2 USB ports on the front to charge mobile devices, even on battery power. If you loose power at home, and your phone is dead, this device will charge it many times over. You can have the display always on, or only turn on with a button press. This is a great UPS. Long battery life (will run two iMac's I have hooked up to it for over an hour).

I have had this a few weeks now and already had it kick in a few times (because power at my home is slightly unreliable). It switches over to battery power without a hickup and keeps all my gear powered for the short outages we normal have. With my enthusiast level computer two monitors and several other devices powered I still get about 45 minutes worth of power on battery, and with the power chute software to shut down my computer when the battery gets low I don't have to worry about sudden disconnects. Overall its a great battery backup and it works well.

I've had this up and running for about a week and, sure enough, my power went out recently for about an hour. The APC went into action and did exactly what I wanted it to do: kept my modem, router, VOIP, and cordless phone all up and running without missing a beat. It also gives you a great option for charging mobile devices during outages, as well as a USB-C port on the front which I assume would power a laptop. One quibble: my unit produces a slight, but high pitched intermittent whistle of sorts. I don't know what that is and need to do some research on that front. It's not loud enough to keep me from sleeping, but I definitely notice it when the room is quiet. Also, while it's great that you can turn the entire display off, the power button is illuminated green and it's surprisingly bright. Long story short? Probably don't put this in your bedroom if you don't have to.

It was easy to setup out of the box, I use it to plug in my desktop and my router. The load displayed is easy to read and easy to adjust by unplugging devices it you go over and get the warning beep. I would definitely recommend if you are prone to brown outs as the power surge when the power comes back on has damaged my prvious laptop. It is not the easiest to decipher every option but it gets the job done.
