Customers are saying

Customers are impressed with the Power Saving Back-UPS XS 1500's long battery life, strong performance, and ease of use. Many also appreciate its surge protection capabilities and the competitive price point. While some users noted the weight and occasional fan noise, the positive feedback on key features outweighs these minor drawbacks.

    Great UPS for network equipment

I purchased the APC Back-ups xs1500 to protect my network equipment for my home network. It keeps my cable modem, router and switches up for several hours during a power outage. No longer will I have to wait for power to resume to continue network operations. This has adequate battery life for my equipment, or even a desktop computer if required. I highly recommend APC battery backup systems for any of your computer/networking protection needs.

Thank God for husbands that know a thing or two about computer lingo. I still do not fully understand the little leaf motif. But it is up and working. Tells you exactlly where to plug in what unit to which plug. Could not be much easier. I am now protected for any power surge out there.Only wish it could protect against all those nasty viruses people have out there trying to kill my computer. Oh well, guess I'll just have to be careful with that one. One worth getting. Great unit.

    Great Backup!!

This is a fantastic unit. Even though it is a bit pricey, it powers and backups my entire system for around 18 minutes, and that is no easy task considering the fact that my desktop, a wireless N router, cable box, Logitech 5.1 Wireless, and 42" Plasma are all plugged into it! I only wish that all ten ports were battery backed up! All in all, a GREAT battery backup!!

I have used APC products for a long time. This unit installed quick and easy and is built well. We lost power two days after it was installed and the unit functioned flawlessly.

Good choice for Battery Back Up

I purchase these battery backups for customers that have expensive electronics. The equipment seems to last longer and there is a brief protection when the power goes out, they are able to finish their projects and shut down the equipment. It's been a good investment. The only downsize is they tend to be expensive, but when they protect delicate electronics, loaded with priceless experiments, the cost is minimul.

    A must-have

Nice unit, everyone should have one of these for their computer, even though the top shelf units are expensive. This thing is bigger than the new slimline computer cases, my wife looked at it and thought THAT was actually the computer. I said no, that's just the battery backup. I love the front panel interface, as well as the resident software watchdog utility you get from their website which monitors through a USB hook. Odd as it was, this unit was obviously in its original untampered wrapping, but when I opened it up it smelled like something already burned, but this design is just a big stinky battery wrapped in a REALLY COOL tower case, so maybe that's OK. I hooked it up, and within 3 days the storms rolled in and it performed great during it's first Event on Saturday 9/12/09. I wish it had more outlets in the back, although that might get you toward the unit's maximum utility, or even the utility of the wall socket it's hooked to.

I bought this almost 3 years ago. I work on the computer full time and cannot risk a power outage. Before buying this, I would experience several outages a month and loose data. After buying this, I've never lost power to the computer and it gives me enough time to save my work.

    Excellent UPS

I have had a number of UPS's and never known if I was putting too much on them. I purchased this unit for my AV System, and liked the idea of the status screen so I could see exactly the draw of the devices. As it turns out, I was able to put my 57" DLP, AV Receiver, PS3, Media Server, HD-DVR, expansion drive, and some networking devices and even if I turned them all on, I would still be using only about 60% of this UPS's capacity. I would have never put that much on an older UPS without a status. Whether you go with the 1500, or the 1300, or another unit, you won't be sorry by getting one of the units that has the LCD screen.

    APC Back-UPS are rock solid

I have about 60 of these at work and they all perform excellent. Of the 2 or 3 that have failed on me over the last 2 years, they all qualify for RMA. APC makes you pay to return ship the product though. Bleh on APC for being penny-pinchers. AVR, eco-smart and loads of other features make for a great product.

    APC 1500VA a worthwhile investment

Not much to say about a UPS. Nothing groundbreaking - it just works, and that's all you want. The best thing about the unit has to be the AVR and the LCD. The screen should be on all their units, because it's really helpful to see how much wattage is being used, how much time is left on the battery, and more useful info.

    Loud Fan

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Terrible. The product description on APC's website, Best Buy's website, and even Amazon does not mention the inclusion of a fan within the unit. Only the reviews mention a fan, which runs while the unit's battery is charging or discharging. I'm surprised that none of the official descriptions mention this fact. It's not even on the box. However once I bought the unit, the fan never turned off! My computer is a rather high end gaming computer, in total consuming about 400W idle and about 650W under full load. I've owned this unit for about 30 days and it never improved during this time. I even contacted APC tech support. Their official support agent informed me that the fan will run if: 1) The battery is charging 2) The unit is running on battery 3) The internal temperature is high 4) The load is more than 45% (fan will run at 50%-100% speed) Number 1-3 I can understand and live with. However, #4 gave me cause for concern. My computer will always be more than 45%. I promptly returned the unit. The fan was just unbearable. I find it absolutely horrible that APC does not list any information about having a fan or specifications of fan usage.

    Bad battery upon arrival

I purchased this unit today to replace the 10+ year old APC unit that died in the middle of the night. When this new unit was first powered on I received the replace battery message and it beeped an alarm. I ran several self tests with the APC agent on the line, and APC is sending me a new battery for my one hour old unit. Google searches for this problem turned up several other users who have had their battery need replacement within the first month of use. Their prompt and courteous support staff are saving this from a 1 star review. However, their quality control is clearly much poorer than it was years ago. I think I'll look into other brands for my next UPS.

Two Bad Units from Two Different Batches

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've tried two of these units in a row, and they both failed within a couple of days. The failure process was the same as others have seen: The unit works fine at first, for about a day, then starts beeping. Other than the beeping, there's no immediate indication of a problem, even if you cycle through the displays on the unit. If you keep an eye on the unit over the next day or so, you'll notice that the battery meter gets lower and lower, despite the fact that the household power is on (as evidence of that, the non-battery backup outlets of the unit continue to supply power). Once the battery meter gets to zero, the battery backup outlets no longer function, and the unit reports the F5 and F6 failures. Note that the non-battery backup outlets continue to function, providing you with a very expensive surge suppressor, and that's what I'm using until delivery of my newly ordered Cyberpower unit. I'm fairly sure the two APC units I tried were from different batches, as one had a manual that was in English only, and the other had a manual with multiple languages. I don't know if APC has just designed a bad unit, or has started using cheap parts that fail under load, though I suspect the latter. It's a shame, as I have an older 1500VA APC unit that I've had for more than five years, which is still going strong on its original battery.

    Not a Good APC product

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The battery self-test started failing almost immediately on this unit, although the unit stays on when I unplug from AC. It may be an engineering issue; the battery may be failing because it slides down the track and fails to make adequate contact with the connection to the unit. I have 5 other APC UPS units that have performed flawlessly, but the BX1500G is not acceptable to me. APC's warranty / website is not an easy website to understand and access. I am going to try to trade the unit in on something that performs better (hopefully).

A power punch sporting a slim form...

ok, this is a backup power unit, the only real test is to pull the plug and see what happens. I have two PCs connected to this beast (newer + older) as well as all accessories and it shows 30+ minutes of backup power. Wow. What's not to like? The buttons on top of unit don't always seem to work, but eventually they work (I think you have to press and hold a certain amount of time at least per instruction manual but a bit confusing). So far owned a month and had three power outages --- no issues whatsoever. I was still surfin' the 'net while all power was out in the house --- too cool. Great purchase...
