With the new iPhone 12 the old charging cord will work but I wanted the new USB-C 20 watt charger to lessen the time to charge. I still use both but it works just as well as the older lightning cord -- I have not used the magnetic charger yet but some autos have it built in. I see no disadvantage to using this new charger other than the extra cost of buying the USB-C unit. For some users that may be a deterrent but when speed in bringing the phone back up to a full charge is important this is the way to go.

Charges pretty fast! I used anker nano for a while and it was getting my phone really hot! But this product is way better.

When I purchased my iPhone 13 Pro I also purchased the charging pad that recharges the phone quite slowly. I came across an article touting the USB-C charging cable, so I bought one to see if all the hype was true. Would it recharge cell phones at lightning speed? I'd have to say, pretty darn close! For example, I accidentally let my cell phone use up all its battery charge, into the red zone. I plugged in the USB-C cable and within about 35 minutes it was up at 80% charged! There are a couple of Settings you can switch off in iPhone to let the charging continue at lightning speed up to 100% but I chose to let the smart phone charging slow down once it reached 80% so as not to damage the battery. I'm very pleased with this purchase and use the cable instead of the pad every night.

Mich faster power for the latter iPhones. Solid, 100% compatible. The only problem is my kids steal my better adapters for their phones. Pricier than clones.

I bought my daughter one of the flat, foldable Apple chargers for her Apple Watch & phone & didn’t realize that it came with the new usbc charging cord. So I purchased the usbc power adapter in order to use it. She took it with her on our vacation & loves it. I had to purchase the Apple 20w USB-C Adapter in order to charge my new iPhone SE. This should have been included with the new iPhone since the phone is useless without it. It was not an expensive purchase; it is the principal of the it. That said, the adapter is working perfectly.
