If you take good care of even non-brand items, they can last long. Apple products just last longer. Don't leave the cable in extreme heat or cold - thats what messes it up.

Get it while on sale

I'd usually get a third party one cause of the price but those eventually would not work or would show "this accessory is not supported." These ones from Apple are somewhat expensive but of course they get the job done. Just get these while they're on sale for $10. Great for charging, syncing photos and music to the computer, and tethering for personal hotspot.
