This cable lets me use the same charger block for my iPhone and iPad as I use for my macbook and Galaxy S9.

Sure, you can find cheaper cables. However, you are running a risk of damaging your device with shady cables, even if bought from major retailers. If you read reviews, you might see that some of these cables do not support PD charging, some wont carry data, etc. With Apple cable, you are sure of quality, you know you will be able to safely charge at max rates, and full data rates for USB C and Thunderbolt are supported.
