Unfortunately, like most Apple products, their use is locked to the Apple platforms (though as bluetooth devices they should work on Android too). Apple could sell a ton more if they would make them platform agnostic, but they choose not to.

The chime on the air tag is easy to identify if you are within the vicinity. You'll need to purchase a casing for it.

I'm able to easily find my keys with the Find My app on my phone. It's easy to activate on your phone and an instruction booklet comes along the AirTags!
