You have to be very close to the airtag for it to show the arrow indicating which direction it is in. Otherwise, the tracking on this is good. It would have been nice if it gave updates on its location more frequently but that would probably shorten the battery life.

He wanted to explore and we wanted him to have some independence. The device reported that he was there but didn’t give a precise location. Expected more from Apple.
