Even when they are close or far from you ! I use Apple tags for my vehicles and wallet and lots more things . Easily take off the tab and connect to the phone !

The AirTag has an easily replaceable battery and the AirTag uses the iPhone network of devices to track. No third party apps required, so much broader reach of nodes that help find your item. I tracked a suitcase cross country and with the exception of when the plane was in the air, I had constant visibility to the location of my bag.
