Alert sounds quiet & notifs disappear intermitt

Volume settings are confusing. My alerts disappear from the screen quickly when I get the phone from my pocket and without knowing what alert would occur at this time, there is no indication of what it was.

I always went Verizon before but they charge you 30.00 or so to transfer your stuff from one phone to the other but that’s easy to do yourself.
