This was my first Mac in several years. I had been a Windows user for awhile and always used a mouse with those laptops. I guess I forgot that (in my opinion) Macs just work better with a trackpad. My previous Mac experience was with a iMac desktop which I also used a trackpad with. Apples newer MacBook trackpads are fantastic! I find the only time I use the mouse is when a "right click" or "alternate click" as Apple calls it is needed. That is just easier to control with a mouse.
