I was a little sad when I found out I still had to buy a cd drive after I bought a 1000 dollar computer but I needed it. It works great and is really easy to set up. It's also really compact so it doesn't take up much room on my desk.

    Great product a bit pricy

With the I Mac and the Mac Air book coming without a cd/dvd drive eventually an external drive becomes an item to have. Connecting the Apple drive is a snap, the size is small and it works great. At about $70.00 it is bit pricier than all other units that will essentially perform as well.

I read about lots of problems with this device ... but so far, it does the job and I have no issues with it. Simple hook up (just plug in USB port) and it's up and running. Looks great ... clean, simple, minimalist (just like all apple products). Took off one star, as I wish it had a physical eject button somewhere (just in case a disc gets stuck).

I was sketchy about this one. No buttons? Like how? But the sleek simple design hooks up to my MacBook no problem. It’s so easy to use! And burns my cds and reads my cds just fine!

    Good external drive

It is unfortunate that Apple does not include these internally with their iMacs. So far the external drive works as its supposed to. I am rating this a four because for the price it should come with other features. Thus, it is a good (but not excellent) external drive. I am sure if I tried to shop around I would have found a cheaper one.

Many may feel that a DVD drive isn't needed anymore, but for those who still may find a need, this is the way to go. It's easy, small enough to crowd your desk, and works without ant compatibility issues with your Mac.

    Don't Leave Home Without It

Quite frankly, I was a little disappointed when Apple made the decision to stop building in optical drives. It's a little bit annoying to have to hook up an external drive every time I want to read from or burn a CD or DVD. So now I own 2 of these drives. One lives in the video editing suite and this one hangs out with my MacBook Pro. It worked flawlessly out of the box and required no set-up time. Of course, we've all come to expect that from Apple and once again, they delivered. So to actually review the drive: it's lightweight, easy to carry in my computer bag and extremely durable. I've never had a bad burn and it functions very well. Since most new Macs are shipping without built-in drives, you'll need to purchase an external. You will not be disappointed in this unit!

After a month and multiple uses the unit is great. runs quiet mechanically. Unit gets seen by os and win7 ultimate via parallels 12 no problem. Have not encountered the eject snafu mentioned in reviews yet. hope I never do. The unit will not run off of usb hubs powered or not. Requires direct connect to MacBook pro so far.

Plug the usb cable into your Mac, read or burn your discs, and when you're done, unplug it! No need for power cables, very slim and unobtrusive device. Matches the Macbook, decor-wise. Upholds the Apple aesthetic admirably!

Why the computer did not come with a CD/DVD player? We do not have the slightest idea. Well we do. It's all about $. We did purchase it and is very please with it. It's small; sleek and most of all portable.

Works better than the original in my iMac, since that quit on me. Similar in speed and fits right on the base under my screen. Much less expensive alternative to opening up the unit and replacing the original drive.

Since the ultralight and slim MacBook Air has very few peripherals, I needed this for tax software and other old programs where I prefer having a CD or DVD than just downloading everything. It works...just have to remember to eject the drive before unplugging it from the usb plug or the Mac will give you a message of grief.
