Great for what it is, but pricey

If you have an iMac (or possibly even a MacBook) a physical media drive like this is still very much a useful if not necessary addition. My only real gripes are the price ($70-80 usually) the length of the cord, and it's lack of BluRay support. 80 dollars for a DVD-online drive is silly, even for Apple, when you can get an admitedly less attractive name brand model for less than half that which works just as well if not better. The price would be justified if it offered bluray burning (or at least reading# support like others do at that price, but Apple remains staunchly anti-bluray so it's not a surprising lack. Still, it would be nice if the price reflected that lack of functionality, but it's not like an Apple user isn't accoustomed to the "Apple Tax," right? Aside from that, I just wish they'd make the cord a few inches longer. it's not an issue if you're able to place the drive right next to your MacBook, or on the right side of your iMac #where the USB sockets are located# but if your desk setup is anything like mine, that's not always an option. Because I need the drive to sit on the left side of my iMac, I had to purchase a separate USB extension cord, which to me is silly seeing how the cords for other third-party drives have ample length without being too long. Is 3-4 additional inches really that much to ask, especially given the above mentioned price premium? Anyway, the drive itself works flawlessly and looks great as you would expect, but because of those issues, I can't give it anything higher than a 4 out of 5.

I've use this superdrive to play DVDs and burn CD's on my new IMac(which I love as well). So easy to install and the price at BestBuy was cheaper than at the Apple Store.

I have not yet burned any CD's so cannot review this product fully, but have been using it to play some old DVD's with my iMac 2010. Previously to purchasing this I tried some other brands and was not happy with them either because of quality of the playback or a strange, high pitched noise that bothered me from one of them. This was double the price, however, I think worth it. There is no strange electronic noise and the quality is as good as the internal one was (before it broke). It is quiet to run and absolutely great quality. Seamless.

Detaching the CD/DVD drive was one of the best things Apple ever did; this drive is awesome, effective, easy to use, and FAST. I have a lot fewer errors burning CDs and DVDs than I did with 3rd party drives.

I was used to a built-in superdrive, so this is a change that I didn't need because I don't like extra "stuff" on my desktop. However, this drive is easy touse and compact, so it is not a problem.

It's not bulky at all and it has a great design. This survey said my review was too short so I am typing this extra BS for Best Buy. I hope this satisfies your prefabricated requirements.

Works great as usual with Apple products.. Works on Mac OSX and Windows OS.. No problems... I just leave it at the work desk and when needed (not often) I plug into the Macbook Pro.

The SuperDrive works great. I can now transfer my music CDs into my playlists. Don't waste your money on cheap no-name players. I bought a cheap CD player last year -- didn't work with my MacBook so a total loss. The SuperDrive is seamless, you plug it in and you're ready to go.

Genuine Apple but at a premium price

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Like other Apple products, this item "just works" but be aware of a few things ... First, it's designed for Macs that do not come with an internal SuperDrive (recent iMacs and MacBooks). Second, you pay a premium price. One could argue there are any number of 3rd party drives that should work but this one will match your Mac and it's the genuine article. Lastly, it will likely require a dedicated USB port, not a hub, even a powered one. The built-in USB cable is convenient but not replaceable (it's molded to the device). On the plus side, no power brick or power cord needed.

    Meh...and No Blue Rae

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First, the good. It looks nice and it is slim. I put a DVD in and it works. Now, the rest. I need a DVD player for my new iMac which came without one. This one is $74.99 during a sale today. In other words, not cheap. The cable is built in and only about eight inches. (really Apple?). My iMac is 3 inches off the desk. Now, when I move the monitor, which I do often, I will need to move this item. When the Cable wears out, as Apple power cables often do, I guess I need to got to the Apple store rather than get a new cable. There is no power light to tell the user it is on. Finally, it does not play Blue Rae which most new drives do. There is no remote. If you are ok with a short dinky cable, no remote and no Blue Ra, and paying a big price, then you may be OK. I am thinking of returning it during the two week period.

Great add-on to my Mac laptop. Works perfectly and I'm so glad I purchased it with the MacAir rather than waiting to do it later. It was useful from day 1 and I look forward to buying more Apple products to enhance my experience. Sales reps were extremely helpful with suggestions to purchase this item and even made recommendations for future add-ons as they became necessary (for back-up and additional storage/memory). Happy with the products purchased as well as the shopping experience.

Looks nice, but not good enough for price

I think the price is expensive for the CD drive. I also wished it was good on blu-ray cd/dvd because you never know when you might need it and it should be accessible for all CDs. I don't like the loud noise either and i wished there was a eject button on the device. When you put a CD inside it takes forever and have to take multiple steps just to erase the CD or burn a CD. I also wished the the wire connecting to the device was changeable. I remember all my other apple white wire got ruined so fast and the inside wires disconnect from pulling it. Other than that it does do everything properly and had no troubles.

    Just another external CD drive

I went ahead and bought the apple SuperDrive because it matches my iMac. I've read reviews about this cd drive not being found when plugged in. Well, the only time it'll acknowledge this drive is when you insert a cd which will show up on your desktop. I like this design because it's a slot loading design unlike some tray loading design which i can see break when using on a regular basis. Cd drive is like other external drives but with the apple name.

    Great addition to my iMac

Although it would have been nice to include a disc drive with the iMac, apparently Apple believes that just about everything can be purchased from the App Store. However, I had a couple of programs I had purchased on disc and needed the drive. Like everything else Apple creates, it's sleek, simple to use, and works right out of the box. There's just something to say for products that you don't need a manual to learn how to install; just plug it into a USB port and it's ready to go!
