Purchased this for my iMac to allow me to add CDs to my iTunes library. The first disc it just flew right through it and had the entire CD transferred in a less than 2 minutes. By the time I got to the 5th CD, it took over 20 minutes and the discs were relatively the same amount of content. It just got progressively slower and slower. It functions, but is painfully slow. Super easy to set-up. Just plug it in and go. You may want to look at the non-Apple alternatives.

    Apple Superdrive not so super

Wish Apple would just get up to speed and start supporting Blu-ray! Drive is ok but nothing special. My old 8x external dvd burner for pc was at least twice as fast on write speed.

Don't bother with this External Superdrive. I received mine today brand new from the Best Buy website. Unpacked it. Hooked it up to my Mac. And the second CD I put in it got stuck immediately and will not eject. I have no way of retrieving my CD without taking apart the drive, which I won't do. I'll have to return this device with my CD stuck in it. I wasted a lot of time purchasing this item and have now also lost a CD.

Apple shows how little it values customer loyalty

The music transfer of this SuperDrive is excellent and speed is okay. A really big drawback is its inability to transfer text from the source to the CD files. That means all song titles, names of singers, names of bands, etc., are totally lost in the transfer and there's no way around it. It is the result of a deliberate decision on Apple's part to avoid the SuperDrive competing with Apple's more lucrative TV shows. Customers who once paid the exorbitant cost of this device are simply left out in the cold.

    Total junk

Ordered from Best Buy.com and UPS delivered it yesterday. Straight out of the box it is useless and does not accept ANY CD or DVD-after a minute or two of running-spits them back out. Also my iMac doesn't even recognize it. I bought my iMac in January of this year and want a external optical drive. After I talked to Apple support yesterday afternoon over the phone, they agreed it is another defective SuperDrive. I had read the mostly negative reviews and decided to try one anyway-deep regrets now. Not Best Buy's fault. Apple should trash this optical drive and start over. Will be shipping back to Best Buy this week. Would give Negative Zero stars if could.

A "Super" Drive with Kryptonite parts.

This drive looks quite smart and not needing external power is a big plus. I was excited when I got this as a christmas present. HOWEVER, when the drive dies after one use of copying 2 cd's onto my Mac I have serious concerns about the quality vs the price of this product. Yes, only 2 cd's. If I plug it in to a USB port (directly in the back of the computer, not through a hub) the device makes a "click-click" sound and that's it. Putting a disc in it does nothing. For $75 I would expect it to be substantially more reliable.

DO NOT BUY! it's literally the same exact thing as any other external drive, except Apple is charging nearly 3x the price. this will also not work with Apple's newest Macbook pro models. you'll have to spend another $15 on dongles to connect this worthless hunk of junk to your shinny new macbook.

Breaking down of player time after time

I had to take the first one to Apple to fix it. They could not. They took the CD out which the iMac could not eject. They told me it has to be trashed. Junked the first one. I have second one that is having the SAME problem. Will have to take it to apple store again to get my trapped CD back and mentally prepared to junk this one too. Money down the drain. You would think buying apple sold products might be a good idea - does not work for me.

CDs get stuck all the time. I tried brand new CDs out of the box, not running. Sometimes it ejects them, but sometimes not. Since there is no way to open the device, you just unplug, then plug it back and pray that it will eject the CD. Whenever it happens to read a CD, it is very slow and stops working half way through.

I bought this drive while I was in the US. I work in Israel but came home to visit relatives. I bought a notebook and an external drive to bring back with me. Since it was an Apple I assumed it was a quality product. When I returned to Israel I plugged it in and tried to load a cd. I wouldn't accept the disk. I tried other disks and had the same result. Since there is no Apple or Best Buy support here I am stuck with it. Lesson learned.

I purchased the USB SuperDrive since my imac drive is broken. WARNING the USB SuperDrive is not compatable with an imac that has an internal drive. I called apple and they confirmed and recommended I purchase a 3rd party drive :( WEIRD for APPLE

I bought this, as I have a MacBook Pro with retina display, which has no dvd drive. Used it 3 times, and it stopped working. Cannot get any help from Apple to get it repaired, unless I want to maybe drive 4 hours to the nearest Genius Bar and hope to get some help.
