An outstanding science fiction film with virtually no violence and an incredible ending. Amy Adams is terrific. Jeremy Renner is perfectly understated. If you go to the movies only for light entertainment, don't buy this film. If you enjoy movies that require your undivided attention, this is for you. Saw this beautifully directed and acted film in the theater and never wondered how much time is left. I won't say much more. The movie is loaded with hints as to how it will end. You'll miss many if not all of them. But once it ends you'll think back and realize why all the things you thought made no sense or thought were a mistake weren't either. An exceptional film that I'll buy and watch many times.

    Don't Call It Sci-Fi

I just watched this movie on UHD Bluray and couldn't wait to write a review while it was still fresh in my mind. My worst fear is that people who would otherwise love this movie may avoid it because they're picturing Independance Day. The science fiction moniker does not do this nuanced movie justice. The pace and timing of this film is methodically perfect, fleshing out the main character, Louise Banks's life story with her daughter, Hannah, like a good book would. It takes it's time and reveals itself through flashbacks and explains why this reoccurring theme is so important to the story as a whole. Amy Adams is amazing in the starring role and should definitely be considered for best actress at The Academy Awards, but the real star of this film may be director Denis Villeneuve. If it's possible to director a movie with love, then this is a case for that. He handles the story with such care and delicacy that it makes it all the more believable. I won't go through the synopsis of the movie but if you like thought provoking science fiction movies such as Gattaca, then this might be your cup of tea. It's a movie that will stay on your mind long after it's over and I think it will stand up to multiple viewings. If you have a 4K tv that can reveal all of the details and subtleties in the many darkly lit scenes and sepia toned flashbacks, then the UHD bluray will be music to your eyes.

    Solid 4 star movie

This was definitely a different movie and a good one to add to your collection. This film is definitely for a mature audience, it's basically the opposite of Independence Day due to little action. It was interesting watching Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner conduct a vocabulary so they would be able to communicate with the aliens. Amy and Jeremy were definitely skeptical of the aliens at first but grew a strong passion for them towards the end of the movie which really kept me glued to the end of the film. I thought it was pretty neat how the movie tied together the entire world instead of just an attack on the USA. Countries formed allies and had major influence on how they would perform security measures. I really don't think that the 4K HDR made too much of a difference for the picture only because the majority of the movie takes place in the dark. If you have some friends or family come over then this would be a great movie to watch for a second time.

I first saw "Arrival" in the theatre and it became one of my favorite films of all-time. I also think that "Arrival" is one of the greatest films of all-time because it has a lot of entertaining and enjoyable action, drama, mystery and suspense including a really great and amazing cast, plot and personal storylines as well.

Arrival is one of those films you have to experience it for yourself and contemplate over the many subjects this film covers in a broad scope to look at. With Amy Adams subtle emotional performance, to the breathtaking cinematography and unique visuals , and the mind-blowing and very emotional twist make this movie an exciting movie experience to enjoy.

finally watched this film (with limited previous media exposure and no spoilers), and the experience was incredible. the visuals are as stunning as the concepts are deeply evocative and thought-provoking. the writing, directing, acting (especially Amy Adams), editing, special effects, and sound design are all remarkable. great sci-fi is used as a mirror to our human experience, and "Arrival" is one of the best sci-fi movies ever, full of intelligence, elegance, heart, and humanity. (like "Interstellar" but 10 times better, in my opinion.)

Not an easy film, but worth it

If you don't mind non-linear storytelling and a certain level of bafflement (at first), in return for a fantastic payoff at the end, this is a movie for you. No way is it an easy film, and I think lots of folks don't like for that reason. But if you love serious, meaty sci-fi, you're gonna love this film. Few movies I know of, for example, offer alien life that is truly alien. (No lumpy foreheads and heavy makeup in this flick, no sir.) But Arrival does and it is breathtaking. If I've discouraged you, that's OK. You won't want to see Arrival, because it will just annoy you. Everyone else, get this disk now.

Good Movie, not ideal for HDR Reference

The 4 stars are for the movie itself, because it was really good. As a HDR reference, its more of a 2-3 star because the movie is mostly shot in dreary conditions. I bought this to get a good sense of my new OLED and HDR player and was a bit disappointed. Again, the movie is solid at 4 stars, just keep in mind the dreary bleak environment as a HDR reference point may not make it as impressive as it could have been.

This is not a movie for the non-intellectual as it bridges concepts and philosophies that require some rather deep thinking, although, it is still entertaining unto itself. Not sure if the storyline was about communication or about the predisposition of fear for the unknown and assumptions based upon faulty logic. A definite good addition for any DVD library for those times when you seek intellectual stimulation.

Arrival is just another incredibly written story by an incredible director! I love his work! Sicario, Prisoners, and now this masterpiece! I really hope they win the Oscar for this because this film was nothing short of extraordinary. The twist is big! The soundtrack to the film is perfect! You will leave that film with such a "wowed" state of mind.

This was a great scifi movie. It is not an action movie, but it is story with several original components. Denis Villeneuve is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors and I am looking forward to Blade Runner 2049!

This far exceeds the typical alien invasion genre of films. Definitely keeps you on the seat of your pants throughout the whole movie. Hard to say much more without giving away parts of the movie. All I can say is watch it and be pleasantly surprised.
