My experience with this headset was not great. First one I ordered came and it was clearly NOT new. It had a smell of cigarette smoke. The headset was filled with dandruff, it was NOT new. I exchanged it, got a new one, but it still wasn't great. I have an older A40 model that is falling apart but it sounds SO much better than these newer models. They just don't sound as good.

    Wicked Audio and Gaming

Fair Warning, I was provided this unit in exchange for my *Honest* feedback. First of all, this is my first experience with gaming and using a special headset for it, but I was ready to try as I love big audio from movies and so forth. So I opted to test this headset and see how games play. First of all the box arrive, it felt a bit weighted. The shipping weight did not lie as it was a good 5 pounds! You gotta be excited this is a quality product, right? So I open the box and I find the headset, cables, and a guide that you can read to get it setup quick! Also included is a Mixer for audio. Need this for optimal gameplay and audio. Setup was simple, plug the mixer into your PC using the USB Cable (Make sure you are in PC Mode) and connect your Mic and audio cable. Remember to plug one end that has a longer jack into the headset and plug the other part into the mixer! Take note of how the mixer looks and take the time to read how it works. You can choose Dolby and other audio modes. Also needed is the software from the Windows Store. This will update the firmware on your mixer. I am kind of frowning at this requirement as I don't want a Windows Store app but rather a downloadable EXE that has a Control Panel similar to what Logitech has on their peripherals. So I proceed to put on my headset... Fits comfortable! Has a nice weighty feel to it. I like! Does not feel cheap at all. Watched some movie trailers first an really cranked up the audio.... NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE! It feels like I am watching in a movie theater, configurable audio settings let me tune the audio to my liking. Listened to some music, Awesome sound! I even tried out my Virtual DJ software on this program an was surprise by the audio quality. Then I throw some games at it.... The audio blows me away. Everything is so nice and clear and you think you own an expensive audio system that begins with the letter B. I had previously played games and listen to the audio with speakers but you really get to hear certain pieces of audio in game you can't hear from standard speakers. Especially in Call of Duty games and other FPS style games, you don't miss any detail. I'm very impressed by the ease of use and quick setup. Maybe took me 10 minutes total to figure out everything and I'm pretty savvy with computers and gaming for the most part. I see that they have a Call of Duty headset available. Given the quality of this headset I may pickup more headsets (for other devices) from this manufacturer as I'm very blown away by the impression this one has given me. You won't be disappointed one bit! This is a solid product.

    Gamer designed headset

This headset is clearly designed with gamers in mind, to provide the best experience in comfort and sound quality. It lives up to the Astro name. I was so impressed with the quality of the packaging and components I wrote a whole page of notes just during the unboxing and examination of what comes with it. There's the headset, the mic, the MixAmp Pro, and several cables, in a glossy & matte black box. It's impressive to see, and even more so to use. The packaging ensures the parts are secured to avoid any damage in transit. Removing the outer box, one finds another box that appears reusable. Most seem disposable, plastic and cardboard that only serve to protect until unpacked. This one is appealing, decorated with sketches on the outside and some inner panels. I took pictures, but they don't show it well; it's something you have to see. I will reuse this box for storage. At first glance, it's a very attractive headset, black and silver with a little blue (PS4 colors for this model). As expected, it has cushions on the band and ear cups, which are meant to remain comfortable for long gaming sessions, and they are very comfortable. They are also not too heavy, but seem sturdy and very well made. The optional Mod kit comes with alternatives for these cushions that are also comfortable, but increase noise cancellation as well. These do a great job already with this, although it's nice to have the option to swap them out later on. Depending on the settings, you can immerse yourself in the sounds from the game, and block everything else out. It's amazing! It also allows for a better streaming experience, since it eliminates the background noises that might detract from gameplay. The speaker tags and mic are also swappable. You can even order personalized or special edition replacement tags. The mic is designed to pick up just the user's voice. The voice of a person next to me who was talking did not get picked up at all, and no other sounds from the room. The only thing that I noticed might be an issue for some is the length of the 3.5mm headset cable. For some, this might limit movement, or placement of the amp, since it's all wired. The optical cable is a good length, and the headset cable could possibly be exchanged for a longer one if this becomes an issue. With my setup, the cables were more than long enough. Getting started was easy, using the included guide, which takes just a few step to connect the components and adjust settings on the console. The headset plugs into the MixAmp, which connects to the PS4 via USB and Toslink optical cables. The MixAmp has a switch to change from PS4 to PC, and knobs for volume and game/voice volume; you can focus on the sounds of the game, or turn it down some to better listen to the voices of the players. I really liked this option, along with the EQ settings, four different options depending on user preference. One of the included pages mentions the word 'epic' and it fits. This headset is epic. If you can afford them, get them. In my opinion, they are the best headset you can purchase. I can't imagine you'll be disappointed.

Best Gaming Headphones on the Market

Astro Gaming has had a reputation for being top-flight gaming headphones and the A40 with mix-amp live up to that pedigree. I guess at some point they were acquired by Logitech which has a great pedigree as a gaming and peripheral maker that needs no explanation. I've used plenty of wireless units as I prefer that for gaming despite the degraded audio quality, so I was looking forward to trying the new A40s with mix-amp and boy was I pleasantly surprised. There's so much tech built into these headphones, from the premium quality headphone aspects but there are trade-offs as well. 1) Unbelievable build quality. You're not going to find better built gaming headphones from the felt ear covers to the chrome ear covers, accents and vertical ear pillars, memory foam head rest and lux wires and microphone boom. 2) The mix-amp isn't a gimmick, its well-built, responsive and basically functions as a mini-receiver. You can quickly control volume as well as mix level of voice vs. game volume which is huge for online gamers. 3) Excellent sound quality. Again, blows away any wireless headset with no risk of cutting out since everything is wired. You won't find better sound quality except for actual audiophile headsets. 4) Non-noise cancelling, open back. This may be a pro or con but overall I think for gaming this is a pro so you can actually hear your S.O. or parents if you REALLY have to. Onto the negatives: 1) It is ONLY wired and requires power over USB to fully function with the mixamp. You can plug the headphones directly into other devices but you don't benefit from the mixamp sound treatments. 2) At its largest setting, it was just comfortable for me, if you got a big buckethead you may not like these headsets. I wear a 7 3/4" baseball cap. 3) There's no wireless or even Bluetooth functionality like some competitors. Again, not a huge negative if you use wired headsets but something to consider. These also work great on the PS4, its too bad they don't officially support Xbox as well, not sure what is preventing that other than maybe licensing/politics, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these headsets for any serious gamer that also wants excellent audio.

Best gaming headphones this year. Extreme Comfort

Astro gaming made a comfortable headset without sacrificing sound whatsoever; The headphones from Astro are the first I ever owned from the brand but so far they left a great impression on me. A40 TR work flawlessly on PS4 and PC and setting it up is easy. I'm honestly just happy that these A40's are actually good in my book overall but I'm going to jump into the meat of the A40's. Design and comfort: A40's look beautiful with blue, black and silver throughout. It's a very mechanical design that does stand out when you are wearing them. There is so much that you can customize that it could feel overwhelming to an average user; To tournament players, these customizations just add to the experience. The ear cushions are very soft to the ears that don't wear on your head. they feel nice to touch and extremely comfortable. These can be replaced if you buy them from Astro website. I wanted to make this the highlight as these are the greatest feeling headphones for gaming I've ever used. I can't stress this enough. The headband feels strong and durable so that the A40's doesn't fall off your head. Having them on my head they never moved as I was gaming. it stays fit just right once you adjust them. The headphones all around are nicely constructed. A40's have adjustable headbands but they are not easy to adjust while on your head. It would be better to take them off first before adjusting. The mic is good and adjustable to almost every position you can have it in. The earcup tags are pretty cool for these headphones if you invest, You can take them off and add many other designs like Super Mario, Halo, and COD to these headphones. some of the tags are "outside canceling" and completely seal the earcups but the default tags don't. Mod Kits are also available that almost complete change the headphone's color. All of this is perfect for tournament users because this gives you more flexibility with design. Showcasing your own unique design. Mixamp Pro / Features: Not sure where to start here because the A40's have so many features that Astro seem like they been building toward for years. These headphones come with a Mixamp Pro that gives you everything you are looking for as a streamer or just gaming. This Mixamp is where you adjust master volume, Balance the game voice for chatting, Input for Dolby surround sound 7.1 with optical input, Adjust EQ modes, Stream output, and Aux input. If you have more than one Mixamp you can daisy chain them for private chat for LAN party experience. Mixamp Pro is very useful and has all the features right into this little device. You can mute the headphones with the switch on the AUX core that's provided. Again if you are a pro player/streamer this could be very useful for your brand going forward. For PC; there is software you can download from Astro called the "Command Center" (Yeah I know. Cliche.) but it pretty much turns the Mixamp into a PC USB soundcard when connected. Indeed useful when setting up presets to your liking. Sound: They sound amazing as they do have 40mm drivers. Without the mixamp pro they sound good as whatever source you have hook the audio coming from. You can use the headphones without the Mixamp Pro on PS4 if you like, just plug them into the controller and you are good to go but you would truly be missing out so many other features if you don't use them to their full potential. I played Resident Evil 2: RE in 7.1 dolby where you can hear every little creek in the floors, The rain splashing on the ground, and Mr. X footsteps from many rooms away. 3D audio as amazing on this game and these A40's. Bass was strong and balanced throughout the game. With Battlefield 1 and V as well as Fortnite you can hear gunshots and footsteps of your enemies a lot better from every direction. Final Fantasy XV you every little particle of magic as it fades when you use them. A40's gave awesome immersion with sound every game I've tested. So good in fact that the A40's change the way I feel about sound in gaming and taking it more serious from this point on. The boom mic lets others hear you as clear as possible, they provided awesome voice out to other players and in case the boom mic breaks you can replace them from Astro website. Overall: I love them, maybe if they were wireless it could have been a slam dunk but Astro already offers that at $50 extra. These felt so good while gaming that I'm just shocked that they are. Resting them on my shoulder didn't dig into me like others headsets normally do. These are definitely pro-related headphones in every sense. My suggestion if you just need gaming headphones to try out other Astro products but if you want to take things a little more serious with streaming, content creation, multiplayer gaming, chatting, and customizability I would highly recommend this beast. There is a lot to mod out with the mod kits and tags for the A40. they fit so well, sound great, and just works. All of the cords you need are provided in the box so you can get started (Thanks Astro.) If there was any complaint from me that I would like to see a wireless integrated over the next year or two at a lower price point. This is a 5-star product in my book, While some of the customization kits and tags are expensive, None of this takes away from the headphones. Gaming is its strong suit and if you are heavy into long sessions these are the best you can buy this year.

This is probably the nicest headset I've owned for any console or PC that I've ever owned. The packaging alone makes this product rise above anything else you'll find on the shelf. It comes with all the cables you'll need for setup; including the optical cable you'll need for your PS4. Once you plug in the mixer, you'll just need to setup the headset. The included boom mic plugs into the side of the headphones and a cable with a mute button plugs into the headset and the mixer. When the mute is enabled, you'll notice the dial lights turn red. It's a nice soft glow, and nothing too distracting. You have various EQ settings at the touch of a button, and can control the volume of the headphones and the game or chat audio. I didn't have to do anything extra on the PS4, the headset was immediately recognized by the console. Everything else was done on the mixer. The headphones feel comfortable over long periods, sound is pretty clear with enough bass to get into the action. Where this headset really shines is on PC. Simply toggle the PC option on the rear of the mixer, and plug into an available USB port; there is no need to use the optical cable with PC. With Dolby Atmos enabled on my PC, I noticed some insane 3D audio while watching Dolby content on my Laptop. I didn't even realize they supported Atmos until they just started working. It's insane just how clear and surreal Dolby Atmos is, with the right content. Otherwise, you're presented with near surround sound with games and other media content. This is a pretty solid recommendation for PS4 and an even more solid recommendation for PC users. If you're like me, you'll like use the headphones on both.

This headset replaced a set of headphones that I use with my PS4. My old set plugged into the controller. So getting used to being wired to the gaming system took a little getting used to. But other than that, I am highly impressed with the construction and sound quality of this headset. When looking at the instructions, I was a little concerned. They are a little cumbersome at first glance, but that is just because there are a few options for installation. I decided to connect mine to the USB port and optical out. The sound quality is phenomenal. There are enough settings on the built in mixer to accommodate anyone’s preference. I play hunting games, in which I need to be able to turn the sound up loud and have crisp feedback in order to track animals. This headset does the job! Every other headset I owned was just not loud enough to pick up the nuances I was looking for. As for comfort, it’s like wearing clouds on my ears. I can play for hours with no discomfort. The padded material does not overheat my ears and cause them to sweat. The headset rests comfortably and does not cause discomfort even after longer playing sessions. My only slight gripe is the length of the wire connecting the mixer to the headset. It’s a little on the short end, but since it’s a standard audio cable, a quick purchase on Amazon or the like will resolve this issue. I would recommend this headset in a heartbeat. It’s a quality headset that, even at the extremes of its volume threshold, produces crisp sound. Whether you’re tracking animals like me, or just wearing them to keep your non-gaming house mates sane, this headset will do the job!

These are one of my five favorite headsets I have ever tried. The sound is full and rich. Mute button is easy to find and in the right place so you aren't fiddling with the cord to find it. The headset is light and comfortable. There is enough air flow that ear sweat isn't really a thing. PC controls and updating the firmware is simple and straightforward. The app is well done. AND my biggest gripe with most other headsets with a boom mic...has been silenced with these. I like my mic on the right side, but also like the idea of it being ambEARdextrious. You can use these headphones in whatever configuration you want. The mic can be removed or adjusted to face the direction you want it. You are not forced into left and right ear. I LOVE THIS! This alone would give it a 5 star as long as the sound was acceptable. I was playing with the configuration both in the app and from the amp and could get the same truly rich sound from either tinkering. All in all I really love these headsets. At one point I had to take the headphones off to make sure I was hearing the sounds correct. It sounded like what was being said on the computer was coming from in the same room I was in. One warning on the comfort for my largish melon. I forgot I had them on and almost brought the PC to the ground. I have already started calling them my AntMan headsets because of the look that gives the feel of antenna sticking out. I like the look. Well done Astro.

The Astro A40 TR gaming headset is a wired headset with funky looks and a practically giant amplifier/mixer. While designed for a PS4s and PCs, it does have a 3.5mm input so can be used with just about any audio source. It has a removable boom mic that actually looks pretty cool with square like ear cups. The ear cups are pretty well cushioned and with the sliding mechanism along the sides of the headband, it can be customized quickly to a nice comfy fit. The build quality seems good on the headset and the mixamp though I'm a bit worried about how the plastic pieces of the headset will hold up over time. The supplied audio cable is about 6 feet in length, long enough for any typical gamer. If you need something longer, you must really have a giant tv set where you need to sit far away from the screen. Audio quality of the headset is pretty good. Explosions and in-game sounds comes through pretty well and it does nicely in a pinch for general listening to music. The mic also did pretty well, providing good audio to team mates with no distortion. The mixamp supports Dolby Pro Logic IIx surround sound. Unfortunately, you're simply not going to get anything good with just two actual audio sources that have no capability to mix against each other. So plugged into the amp, sound quality doesn't really get better. What you gain is a dial that lets you quickly adjust the mix between your mic and game audio with a volume knob that lets you adjust game volume. It's a bit annoying that there isn't another way to adjust volume with the headset directly. It is interesting. The headset on its own is pretty good. Both for gaming and just as a standalone headset. Large headsets have become the norm at the gym so this may not stand out too much while working out. The weight puts it in line with other headsets. The only downside for on-the-go or workout use is that it is completely wired. It is amazingly comfortable to wear. I think this alone rates the four stars. The mixamp looks like a professional unit. With optical inputs, EQ settings and the ability to stream or daisy chain outputs, I can see this being useful to pros. For a casual gamer though, it feels a bit overkill for what you'd mostly use it - turning up (or down) the volume on your in-game sound/music. While the mixamp is cool, it really doesn't contribute much in my opinion to boost my rating.

Best Gaming Headset I Have Used

This headset is by far the best ones that I've used for gaming. They are very comfortable and very customizable. The thing that really puts this headset over the edge is the mix amp. You are able to control what type of sound you want for first person shooters, to movies, to more dialogue heavy games. You can change the volume very easily with the mix amp and with fine detail distinguish where in the game sound is coming from. The set up is not the most idea especially if you just want to put on the headset and play but it is by no means difficult to set up. It takes three cables to be used and takes no longer than 30 seconds to set up. The cables are pretty long so even if you play on the couch and not a desk then you'll have plenty of reach to accommodate comfort. The microphone can be easily unplugged or switched off/on. The mic itself it very clear and cancels out of lot of the background noise so that only your voice is projected. The headset itself does a very good job of sealing the outside environment so you only hear in game sound which is perfect for me since I have dogs barking at people walking by all the time. I have only used this headset with the PS4 and it is definitely worth considering if you are looking for a new headset especially because you are able to customize just about everything with the mod kits. Overall, I really enjoy the sound and comfort of this headset.
