However, some customers find the headset expensive and have noted compatibility issues with certain consoles, along with concerns about weight and setup complexity. "Unicorn" of Gaming Headsets…my search has ended
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Astro Gaming, a company originally spun off from Astro Studios, and eventually acquired by Logitech (2017) is a company well-known for quality, and design. The original A40 was released over 10 years ago (the first ‘TR’ version was released in 2015), and, with its fourth iteration, the new A40 TR is poised to, once again, become THE premiere gaming headset. The newest version comes in 6 variations – 3 with the MixAmp Pro TR, and 3 without. The headsets are, essentially, identical, and, for the variations coming with the MixAmp, they, too, are virtually identical. As such, this review can, essentially, apply to all 6 variations. Additionally, I’ve owned several gaming headsets over the years, plus I’ve had the opportunity to test out several others, and, in my opinion, the Astro A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR is one of the two best gaming headsets I’ve used. If you’re happy with that, skip to the “Good, Bad & Ugly” and “Final Thoughts” sections…and, if you need more convincing, then reads on….. UNBOXING, AND INITIAL IMPRESSIONS: Open the box, and you find the A40 TR headset on the left, the MixAmp Pro TR on the right, plus boom mic and several cables. NOTE: The auxiliary cable is only used if you are NOT using the MixAmp. The headset is, literally, THE BEST-looking gaming headset I’ve ever seen. It’s cool, sleek…AND functional. How it’s adjusted is almost identical to how the 3rd-Gen A40 was adjusted, but there are enough improvements in the design to make the new headset enough of a reason to upgrade (if you’re rocking a 2nd-Gen A40, or anything that isn’t an Astro Gaming headset. My ‘initial impression’, is, simply put, “I’m impressed like I’ve never been” (where gaming headsets are concerned). This is primarly because of the headset, but it’s also due to the MixAmp Pro TR. I’ve played around with the Turtle Beach Elite Pro TAC, so, for me to say “I’m impressed”, that says something…plus, the A40 TR & MixAmp Pro TR cost $50 less, making it an even better option. SETUP AND CONFIGURATION: The truth is, in regards to getting everything set up, just follow the directions…it’s quite simple. As long as you follow the directions, you shouldn’t have any problems. As for configuring, that’s where things get interesting. The MixAmp comes with 4 pre-programmed EQ presets…but, with the Astro Command Center software, you can create your own EQ presets. My suggestion would be to play around with the software adjustments, as what sounds “great” to one of us might not sound “great” to another – you can fine-tune the sound to what YOU like best. Also, there are three “speaker tags” (see “ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS”, below, for more info) included – one for the right side, and two for the left – so that you can choose whether, or not, to use the mic (ie. if you don’t use the mic, one of the two ‘left side’ speaker tags covers the mic jack). SOUND QUALITY: the headset might look almost identical (to the previous A40 TR) from the outside, the insides are entirely new. Also, the MixAmp Pro TR is of a new design (including the layout having been rotated 90 degrees). From what I’ve read, the previous A40 TR, when used with the Dolby Surround setting, produced a “metallic reverb”. I can assure you that this “metallic reverb” is gone. Not only that, but, between the improved Dolby Surround, and Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos, the virtual surround sound positioning is greatly improved, and not more realistic. Compared to the headsets I’ve been using (I won’t indicate which ones, other than to say one is from Logitech, while the other is from Plantronics), the Astro A40 TR is a huge improvement. When combined with the MixAmp Pro TR, the sound quality is improved even further. ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: I love my V-Moda headphones…not only because they sound incredible, but also because V-Moda offers user-selectable plates, allowing owners to customize the look of their headphones. While it has nothing to do with the sound quality of the headphones, it gives owners the opportunity to show “a piece of who they are”. With gaming headsets, I’ve never seen, or even heard of, this possibility…until the Astro A40 TR. The A40 TR (and other Astro Gaming headsets, I’m assuming) is what Astro Gaming refers to as “Mod Kit ready”. What this means is that you can customize your A40 TR is a few different ways. First, there is the prepackaged ‘A40 TR Mod Kit’ ($60), which is a 6-piece package, containing color-coordinated ear pads, speaker tags, headband, and mic (choices are Astro Red, Astro Blue, Astro Green, & Halo Grey). If you only want to change the speaker tags (which are magnetically held in place), there are currently 17 options to choose from ($40). Lastly, if none of the currently-available speaker tags jumps out at you, you can upload your favorite artwork, photos, or (almost) whatever, and, for the same $40 as the predesigned speaker tags, you can have your own custom tags made. THE GOOD: • Outstanding sound quality (with, or without, use of the MixAmp Pro TR) • Improved sound quality over previous model • Sound-customization, via the MixAmp Pro TR and/or Astro Command Center • Headset customization, via ‘speaker tags’, or complete ‘Mod Kits’ • Price THE BAD: • Price (yes, I know I listed this twice…see “FINAL VERDICT” for my reasoning) THE UGLY: • I tried to think of something…anything…to put here, but I couldn’t FINAL VERDICT: First, let me explain my having listed “price” under both ‘good’ & ‘bad’. It’s ‘bad’ because $250 isn’t just a “lot” of money to spend on a gaming headset…it’s a LOT of money to spend on a gaming headset. At the same time, it’s ‘good’ because, if you were to have purchased the Turtle Beach Ultimate Elite Pro Headset Bundle (Elite Pro Tournament Headset + Elite Pro TAC), you’d have paid $50-120 more than what you’ll pay for the Astro A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR, thus you’re saving a HUGE amount of money going with the Astro package. Now, before anyone responds back, telling me that Turtle Beach has a newer unit (Elite Pro 2 + Super Amp), not only am I very well-aware of this fact, but I have already tried it, putting it through its paces…and, between the Elite Pro 2 & A40 TR packages, while I do really like the Elite Pro 2, I’ll take the A40 TR anytime (if I were comparing the previous A40 TR against the new Elite Pro 2, the Elite Pro 2 would win…BUT, against the new A40 TR, the A40 TR wins, hands down). Also, if you want to compare the amps, while the TAC provides greater control, the MixAmp TR is easier to use, and just far more convenient. That being said, once you add in the Command Center software, the MixAmp TR becomes the winner. I realize there’s a lot of “food for thought” in this review. For one, do you really want to spend $250 on a gaming headset package? If you’re on a budget, you’re probably inclined to answer, “No.” Even if you can afford to spend that much (or more), some might still answer, “No.” For those, be my guest, and purchase a (much) cheaper headset. You might be pleased with what you select…and, then again, you might not. Cheap (price-wise) headsets tend to have poor sound quality, and their build quality can be anywhere from ‘ok’ to ‘will this still be in one piece 6 months from now’. If you truly want great sound quality, as well as excellent build quality, the Astro A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR should be on your (very) “short list”. I’m not going to tell you this is the best gaming headset you can get. I’m not going not tell you it has the best sound, or the best features. Only you can make that determination…but, I WILL highly advise you to consider, and test (at minimum) this headset, and I HIGHLY doubt you will be disappointed. My ears hear things differently than your ears…of that, I am certain…but I can (and will) tell you that, with the MixAmp Pro TR, and the Command Center software, you can fine-tune the sound to the point of achieving that “peak” sound you are looking for. As for me, I won’t be purchasing, or even testing, any more gaming headsets…at least until my Astro A40 TR & MixAmp Pro TR are approaching their “last legs”. As I mentioned near the beginning of this review, I have owned numerous headsets (including the Logitech & Plantronics units I still have), and I have tested an even greater number, and none have been as good (in sound OR build quality) as these. That is how confident I am that I have finally found what I was looking for (at least in regards to gaming headsets…as for other things in life, the search continues). Disclaimer: This product was provided free, or at reduced cost, for the purpose of reviewing the product. Nevertheless, the above review, be it positive, negative, or anywhere in-between, is a 100% honest review, and the price paid played absolutely no part in my review.

Best headset for gaming!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've used several different brands of gaming headsets over the years and nothing compares to the comfort and sound Astro provides. The A40 TR are no exception. Set up is easy. Plug everything in, download the Astro Command center software and update firmware. The headset comes stock with 4 preset sound profiles all of which can be customized to your liking. The comfort and sound of this head set is amazing! You can also customize the look by swapping out the back-plates or ear-cups. I prefer the microfiber feel to the ear-cups over anything else. Out of all the headphones I own, the Astros are the most comfortable. Additionally, the microphone is excellent. My squad has had no issues understanding what I'm saying and they say I sound clean and clear. If you are looking for a new gaming headset you will not be disappointed with the Astro A40 TR.

Very comfortable
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off, let me say these are the most comfortable, right out of the box headphones I have ever worn. I wore them for 8 hours straight, and had zero issues. When playing games, this headset gave me a great sense of direction where footsteps were coming from, and explosions, gunshots, and vehicle sounds were very crisp. These also preform well when listening to music, watching movies, and YouTube videos. If I had to get picky, my only complaint would be is that they could use a touch more bass. Overall, I have no problem recommending these for other gamers, especially for those who play battle royale games.

Great sound, not as great portability.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It’s rare to find a piece of “gaming” gear that can’t be described as overkill in one way or another. Even by those standards, the Astro A40 and its amp stand out for their excess. The headset is not only built like a tank, but configurable into about four different kinds of tank. The boom mic can be attached on either side or removed altogether if you like. Magnetically attached panels (part of their modkit system) can let you quickly switch between closed or open backed drivers depending on how much noise isolation you need. Even the padding is held on with magnets, allowing it to be quickly popped off should you ever need to clean or replace it. Were that all you got in the package it would easily be enough to make the A40 stand out. But the real star of the show may be the included USB amplifier. While at first glance the amp doesn’t seem to be anything spectacular, there are a surprising number of features packed into a very small package. While the controls on the device itself are limited, using the optional command center software lets you exercise fine control over the equalizer and mixer settings. You can even save several user profiles to its onboard memory, meaning if you play on more than one computer you don’t need to install multiple copies of the software. It’s also got quite a few features built with professional streamers in mind, including aux inputs and the ability to chain multiple amps together. When all the pieces are working together, the audio is about as close to flawless as you can get without spending considerably more on studio-grade equipment. That said, that also brings up perhaps the biggest flaw of this setup: its complexity. When I first tried adjusting the settings in the command center, I somehow managed to set the amp to ignore all the audio from the primary source in favor of the audio from my own mic. I ended up sitting at the menu screen of my game for a good ten minutes while I tinkered with it trying to get the audio back to normal, then ended up just having to reset the whole thing back to the factory defaults and start over. There are also a LOT of small parts and cables that could potentially get lost, and apart from the box they all came in there isn’t any kind of carrying case or storage solution to help you keep track of them. It’s very easy to imagine that some of the less frequently used cables and accessories might get lost in the shuffle if you’re regularly lugging it around to LANs and tournaments. Also annoying is the fact that the headset uses a 4-pole plug which combines the input and output signals into a single connector and as far as I can tell does not have an option to split it into the usual dedicated headphone/mic pair that most computers use, so if you do want to bring these along without their included amp you'll either need to use it with a PS4 or go without the boom mic. As such, I think I might have to disagree with the description on the box. I don’t think this is the kind of gear you’d want to be regularly bringing with you wherever you go or relying on at a major tournament where you won’t necessarily have the time or tools to troubleshoot things if it doesn’t work immediately. You’d be much better served just setting this up once and leaving it in place, and maybe just bringing the headset with you on occasion.

Loved my A40s
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just upgraded to wireless, but my A40 TRs lasted 4 years and were still flawless when I traded them in. I never had a single issue. At one point i had them connected to both my PS5 and my PC...never had an issue. Audio mixer is great as well. It was just time to go wireless or I would still be using them. Cannot recommend these enough! The only thing I ever had to replace was the 3.5mm cable because my cat kept chewing them!

Expensive for what you get
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: Extremely comfortable Ears stay cool and not sweaty Feel high quality Sound is decent Cons: Switching between headsets is complicated Difficult to setup Wires everywhere while using These are so comfortable and the sound quality is great but the wires for using it are a huge pain. The Amp is a neat idea however it's clumsy to work with and adjust when needed when you really want to focus on the game. I feel overall this is a pricey product for something that doesn't feel user friendly. I reach for my other headset more often even though this is more comfortable.

Open box quality control issues
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Missing aux cable and even after acquiring one of my own the left ear produces no sound. Open box still means it's supposed to work. Why should I bother with open box when I constantly have to return products that shouldn't have been sold in the first place.

Astro Gaming Headset with MixAmp Controller
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Finally, after a couple of shipping issues, I've received my Astro Gaming Headset. The packaging of this headset is top-notch. Unboxing the package, you will find the headset (which is compatible for both a PS4 and/or PC) with speaker tags, the detachable microphone (which plugs into the side of the left ear cuff), the MixAmp Pro TR Controller, audio cable with mute switch, micro-USB cable, optical cable, and user documentation. This thing has just about any cord you need which is awesome. Initially before connecting everything I tested the headset out on my PC first and I must say that I was blown away by the sound quality. The sound was amazing and crystal clear. For me setting it up was simple and self-explanatory to my PS4, and I'd imagine it being simple for hard-core gamer, however, it's a little cumbersome with all the cords going here and there. After getting everything connected, I fired up a game and it was like I was in another dimension. Connected to my PC the sound was amazingly clear and awesome.; but now connected to the PS4 and it's 10 times better. Aside from the clarity of the games and chat, one of my fave features on this set is the mute switch on the audio cable. That comes in hand as I've tested and tried other headset cables most did not have a mute switch on the audio cable. Everything is amazing with this package and the build quality of both the headset and the MixAmp is awesome. Both of which has some heft and does not feel cheap. If you're looking for a great quality headset this is it. You can't go wrong with this. Not to mention its got all the necessary cords and cable you'll need. I recommend this set for the hardcore gamers, but it can be used via the audio cable to connect to a PC as well.

Home run!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first Astro product and from the standpoint of build quality alone I’m extremely impressed. Both the headset and the mix amp feel top notch, and they both have a nice heft to them that make them feel like a quality product. But none of that would matter if they didn’t deliver when it comes to gaming, and these things deliver in spades when it comes to that! This is the first headset I’ve used where you can prioritize game volume or chat and I think it’s really nice to be able to change that on the fly. Playing black ops 4 multiplayer the game comes to life and really does allow you to hear pretty much everything so much better. Chat quality on my end was excellent and echo free. If you’re a serious gamer you wont be disappointed in the quality and versatility these will give you when gaming.

Excellent Sound But Complicated Setup
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This headset is for the hardcore, competitive gamer. Whether using with a PS4 or your PC you'll get some outstanding sound quality with this rig. However, if you're just wanting to use these as a pair of regular old cans it can be done, however if you want the full experience then take the time to setup the mixer properly. The advantages here are it's wired which means a reliable connection with no possible interference if you're at a group gathering for your gaming session. While the headset itself is a bit on the bulky side it is much lighter than it would appear to be and rather comfortable for longer stretches of time. As stated before the sound from these cans is outstanding, whether it's the sound effects of your game of voice chat. The mic does an excellent job of picking up your voice without a bunch of extraneous ambient sound being picked up. Overall this is a highly effective product.

Is it possible to have too much functionality?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really have mixed reviews about these headphones. It's not the fault of the headphones themselves, rather they may just be too advanced for me. There is nothing wireless about these headphones. They connect to the mixamp via wire which then needs to plug into the PS4/PC. What I did love is the way they look. I love how the earpads are detachable for easy cleaning or replacement and that the mic can be put on either side. Another thing I cannot take away from these headphones is how they sound. It is impressive. Crystal clear. I really liked how the mixamp allows you to adjust the game sound in relation to voice chat. What I don't love is the wires. They get in the way. Next time I will go full wireless.

Excellent Gaming Headset!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This headset is great plugged directly into my controller, for that I would give it 5 stars. However when you plug it into the Mixamp Pro it is a total game changer! The sounds are rich and vibrant, and the directional audio is stellar. If you are looking for a great wired gaming headset look no further this one is perfect!
