The Astro A40 + MixAMP M80 presents itself as a tournament ready, mod-kit ready headset for the XBox gaming systems. My review of this headset is based on my time using them with my XBox One for both games and for movies (sort of off-label use). The A40 has been around for a bunch of years and has held a solid position as one of the best gaming headsets on the market. They are solid, very-well constructed with top class materials. The company Astro was built by gamers, for gamers. They design products that they themselves want to use. Their products aren’t relabled, repurposed models that have been modified to be marketed to the gaming universe. Astro products were designed and tailored specifically with gamers in mind. That’s important to remember. As a gamer my needs in a headset are different than when I’m listening to my favorite music. When inserted into a game the headset becomes a part of me, it is part of the game, it can give me an edge or it can hurt me. A good headset is as important as any peripheral used in immersing yourself into a game. Beginning with the presentation of the Astro A40 in the box it comes in, there’s nothing too fancy about it. The outer box is a simple shell that you remove to reveal a glossy clam shell style hinged storage box. This is actually quite nice, and a keeper. It’s a pity though that the interior of the box is a simple cheapo poly plastic molded shell. Astro should have spend a few extra pennies to pair the classy box with a matching interior. But alas, they cheaped out. True this has zero to contribute to the sound quality of the headset, but still - it’s a package and at this price point impressions matter. Just look at how Apple does it… I removed the headset and the M80 MixAmp and have a close inspection of the hardware. I’m impressed! There is some seriously good engineering going on here, with an equally impressive attention to detail and quality of materials and build. These look and feel every bit worth their price point, and honestly better than many others I’ve used in the same price range. With respect, these are at Apple-quality level build. There’s not much other than plastic, but not cheap plastic - they are using high end materials here. I understand the price point now. These are going to last a very long time. Astro made the A40’s to be minimally customizable, which isn’t something I’m likely to do. But some gamers will do that given the opportunity. Parts of the headphone are held on using high-strength neodymium magnets. What I fully appreciate is that the foam earpads are also attached with these micro-magnets. They hold on strong, yet are easy to remove and replace when they wear out. Very nice design indeed. The weight of the headset is about normal for this type of hardware. They are heavy in comparison to my audio (music), only headphones, but equal to most every other gaming headset with a mic that I’ve owned. It would be nice if they were a bit lighter, but honestly after wearing them for over an hour of gaming I felt no discomfort. In fact I forgot I was wearing them at times. That shows how well these sit on my head. They grip just right, very comfortable. Onto where the rubber meets the road with gaming headsets - sound quality (playback and recording). I plugged the M80 MixAmp into my XBox One controller. Set up was fast and simple. The controls on the MixAmp were simple, laid out well, and functioned easily. The master volume knob is easy to grip and adjust in real-time. The EQ settings were also easy to change during gameplay as needed. The A40 comes bundled with a Dolby Atmos subscription license (which is a great deal). I definitely recommend installing the Atmos software, I noticed a difference immediately in spatial awareness. It was like a fog was lifted after installation and my senses of my virtual environment cleared and improved! While playing CoD I could fully appreciated the background music, the sound effects, and immersive 3D spatial environment. The mic sticks out kind of far, which for someone like me is a bonus. My game-mates commented that my audio was very clear, better then what I've been previously using. The MixAmp is a nicely designed peripheral that integrates perfectly into the Xbox controller. It mates perfectly, and the sound clarity is just amazing! My only complaint is that the volume level only gets so loud. I mean it’s fine, but it would be nice to have more horsepower in the volume db level. I suspect the problem is more with the controller than with the headset since it is what provides the power. That’s a weakness to me… These headphones are dependent on the power from the controller, which is its Achilles heel. This might not be an issue for everyone, but for someone of an older age like me, I could use more volume. During gameplay the volume level was more than sufficient, but for watching movies I had to max out the volume to really enjoy the movie. So if the latter isn’t important to you, then you’ll be very happy within games. In summary the sound quality for the everyday gamer is excellent, I am very impressed and happy. These headphones are built well, there’s no gimmicky LED’s flashing, just good sound, good comfort and a feeling of material quality. Putting these on remind me of slipping into the seat of a Mercedes Benz. You can feel the quality every time you put these on. They are worth every penny, and I would definitely buy them again and recommend them to others. Very nice!

I expected a lot more from a mic that costs $200. But instead the sound quality is only decent and it doesn't even have a high volume. I could buy a $100 mic with the same quality and save a ton of money instead.

This Astro Gaming headset is one of the better headset’s I’ve used for my Xbox. The headphones are packaged in an attractive manner. I love when I spend a lot of money on something and they look high-end in the box, even if I’m just going to put the box in recycling—presentation matters! The headset is attractive and comfortable. It uses magnets to secure many parts so no worry about the ear cups eventually tearing off, and you can always replace them if they wear out. There are many customization options such as speaker tags and mods like colors or different cushions available for these, which is great if you’re into that sort of thing, or anticipate your needs changing in the future. Out of the box the headset is extremely comfortable. The cushions are not obtrusive, and the arms don’t press the earpieces into your head but use enough force to keep them in place without shifting or coming loose during play. I wear glasses so this is very important for me. They were still comfortable even after several hours of straight gaming. The arms also extend to a nice length, even when you have a large head—this has been a problem for me with other headsets. One of the best features is the mic being configurable to either side. Every other set I’ve used has had the mic on the left without the option of switching it. After trying these I prefer it on the right—it feels natural to me on that side, and with my PC monitor configuration (with one monitor to my left) it does not seem as obtrusive. Playing on my Xbox it was nice as my table to put drinks on is to my left and it again didn't feel in the way. The headset plugs straight in with the Xbox adapter, after a quick controller update that’s pretty much it for set-up aside from putting the mic where you want it. I have a USB headphone adapter for my PC and it was plug-and-play with that as well. Very simple to use and ready to go as soon as it’s plugged in. The sound is great with several configurable options available through the EQ—I kept it on Core for gaming (preferring that setting to the ‘pro’ setting—which was almost too detailed for me) and the Astro setting for movies and music. I tested all three settings with both my Xbox 1 and PC. The sound is crisp, clear and as detailed as the game developer would allow it to be—Diablo III and Overwatch on my PC really allowed for directional sounds. Overwatch did the same in my Xbox—I could genuinely tell what direction enemies were at any point thanks to the detail in the sound. Streaming music and movies also sounded terrific. A code for Dolby Atmos is included as a nice little bonus, though I already had it. My son and I both tested the headset playing a coop version of Diablo over the computer, as well as logging into a Minecraft server on the PC and Xbox. Sound was great on both, and I could clearly hear him, and vice-versa, on each system. The one downside to this is obviously the wire. It’s fine using it on my Xbox as plugged into the controller the length of the wire is not an issue. With the PC the shorter wire can be an issue. My PC is currently close enough where it’s fine, but I have been considering re-configuring some things, and if I do the wire will be too short for these to work. Plus, wireless is always preferable to keep things less cluttered and less chance of the wire being pulled out, tripped over, etc. . Overall, I highly recommend these headphones if you’re looking for a new option, especially for an Xbox. They are comfortable, sound great and work in a manner befitting top-end headsets.

The 2019 Gen 4 is the best headset you can get

This is a review of the newest 2019 Gen 4 version of the Astro A40. I love this headset. I have used the A20 series before I liked those but these take the experience up a few levels First, it comes nicely packaged. It's a box in a sleeve. once the box is removed it flips open and you get to see the headset and M80. Under the plastics on the left side, you will find instruction and your 2 year Dolby Atmos code. Setup is extremely easy. With the code you just go to redeem code on your Xbox, download the app and go through a very quick setup that helps you change a seeting thats needed for these to work with Atmos. You plug the M80 into the controller and the headset plugs via 3.5mm cable to the M80. You would think it would affect weight but its not noticeable at all. Once set up you fit them for comfort and i have always found Astro,s to be very comfortable. The band has nice well placed padding for the top of your head. The earcups easily cover your ears and also feel nice pressing against your head. you can change the size by pulling on the cups. Very simple and very comfortable. When in game these things really shine. In Battle Royale games you can hear people coming from all around you. It makes it much easier to pinpoint where they are coming from and help your results in games. For other games, the sound is loud and has a really nice depth to it. You can change the sound setting at a click of a button on the M80. It will bass boost and remove boost for a clearer sound. I live it in the standard setting as it gives you a nice balanced sound. Engines roaring, guns popping off and grenades exploding do sound fantastic with this headset and I would have no issues recommending this to anybody that plays video games. Its a step above the others and you won't be disappointed. Don't forget, when you buy these now in store they will be the new Gen 4 version that came out this year so when reading reviews be sure you are reading them for the correct release year

The amp was the only feature I liked, and yet it requires you to use the attached cable, forcing you to use the Astro headset as you can’t attach a cable that has a mic, such as a VMODA Boom Pro. The headphones themselves are quite trash and not worth the money when you could have an incredible—-INCREDIBLE— set up with a VMODA boom pro and a set of Phillips SHP9500s (online) for the same price.

the good: - sound quality - Very impressive sound quality, either plugged into the adapter and controller, or using the included cable to plug directly into my laptop. A bit on the warm side in terms of sound signature, but very clear and balanced. Plenty of punch and volume to keep you immersed in the game. - comfort - Light foam ear pads are very comfortable and breathable, and also remove easy for swapping or cleaning. - microphone quality - Ajustable arm swings down to speak or completely out of the way. There's also a really clever design choice where you can remove the side place and swap it to the other side if you prefer. Certainly not a game changer, but if you have a preference (I prefer my mic on the right hand side) it's a nice little touch. - balance and volume controls at your fingertips - The M80 Mixamp has volume, balance, and mute functions at your fingertips, making it easy to use in-game without distraction. - build quality feels high, with quality materials and design. the bad: - PC requires a wired connection (Not a headphone issue, but a limitation of the controller itself.) - Not really the headphones' fault at all, but when using them with a PC instead of an Xbox, the controller must be connected via micro-USB to the PC. When using Xbox, they are completely wireless. - Included headphone cable is somewhat short to use the headphones without the adapter. miscellanious: - mute light is on adapter, not headphone. Not a big deal for some people, especially if you're using the controller adapter as well, but on my previous headphones I have a light on the boom mic itself to let me know when I'm muted. overall: I tested these both with and without the M80 Mixamp, and so far I'm really happy with these headhphones. Super comfortable for long sessions and terrific sound. Highly recommended, 5 stars.

This headset if fairly good but what it really lacks in is the sound quality and comfort these have zero bass for sound and with Dolby Atmos I still have zero difference just the same quality and comfort they do start hurting my ears just after 20 minutes and it does get really hot and sweaty so overall I would not consider buying a headset from Astro again I rather just used so ear buds instead.

To be honest this is my first truly dedicated gaming headphones for my Xbox one and truly blown away. Overall the sound is very good, with excellent bass and mid-range, the A40 sounds pleasing and very natural but still providing great explosion sounds. Included with the A40 Xbox bundle kit is the M80 Amp, this sits between your headset and controller. The headphones are corded to the M80 on the controller, which is wireless. The M80 amp basically gives you the ability to adjust your game/chat mix, mute and unmute your mic, adjust master volume and includes a dial around the mute button. Another button in the middle allows you to switch between several built in EQ profiles. An LED strip along the middle acts as a profile indicator, for volume level and displays your chat/game mix. The mic quality is excellent. In quiet environments, speech recorded or transmitted with this mic sound detailed, rich and natural. The mic works great in noisy situations as the mic seems to pick up voice audio while filtering out background noises...really a great mic. Additionally the microphone can be moved to either let or right side depending on your preference.

There were several times while using this headset, that I had to pause and take it off just to make sure my surround sound wasn't on. The sound is just that good. The build is great. Nice and sturdy. Very comfortable. I do wish they would fold for portability, but the box it came in serves as a great "case" for the time being. Fairly easy set-up for the Xone, and I appreciate the physical settings at your fingertips and not relying on an app.It may be different for the wireless model, but I like switching quickly on the fly. There are 3 EQ settings, and I can hear the intricate differences in each setting. Want to hear the BOOM of an explosion, go 3, hear all the footsteps, go 1, and 2 is a great mix of both. Speaking of EQ, listening to music is also a nice experience. Even with volume blasting, I didn't notice any clipping. Not common in gaming headsets. Now, the downside. This headset is advertised as compatible for PC, but that is slightly misleading. Yes, it will work with PC (like any other headset), but from my experimentation, there is no audio customization on the PC side. It's plug-and-play, and that's it. I would have liked some audio tweaks, even if using a program for modification. I understand there is an amp specifically for PC, but the description headline is a bit tricky. Not a biggy for me since I have specifically for Xone, but just a note for those who are 50/50. Other than that, I'm happy to welcome this to my set-up! Great sound!
