Customers are delighted by the ROG Strix 18" gaming laptop's impressive performance, large screen size, and high refresh rate, which contribute to an immersive gaming experience. However, some users have noted issues with backlight bleed, battery life, and fan noise. While many praise the build quality and graphics capabilities, concerns about coil whine and heat generation have also been raised. Overall, the laptop receives positive feedback for its powerful performance but some users experienced minor drawbacks.

First off this review is more for the giant run around Nest Buy gave me and not the product itself. I learned the hard way that if UPS intentionally damages your package and you go about things the proper way it just causes a bigger headache for you personally. I apparently bought this open box product when on sale and now it’s several hundred dollars more than when I originally bought it, all I wanted was a replacement I even waited for an open box of the same condition to be available for shipping or a store a hour or so away. After dealing with 4 agents and 2 in store managers I was told it’s impossible for them to match my original price and to “Just wait for it to go back on sale”, direct quote from the manager. So now I’m out a laptop and just have to hope that the price goes down to what it used to be since Best Buy’s so concerned with someone ripping off their open box items that they rip off the customer. So the moral of the story is to let UPS get away with damaging your product and bring it directly to the store because holding UPS responsible is to much effort.

Exceptional Gaming Laptop!

It goes without saying, this is hands down one of the best gaming laptops on the market for 2023. From the huge 18 inch beautiful display, to the sheer performance and very desirable new 40 series gpus, the Asus ROG Strix is not messing around.
Out of the box you'll instantly feel it's presence from the sleek matte color scheme, mine being the eclipse gray offering, and ROG's signature watermark. Sadly with more power comes even bigger power bricks to run said machines, so portability is not the easiest, especially since battery life is questionable. This thing sucks up battery pretty quickly and that's without having turbo mode on. I was able to get just under 3 hours play time on performance mode (default) with ultra settings on apex legends. It's not horrible but if you want to fully experience the power of your laptop, you may consider being always plugged in. It's no surprise the star of the show here is Nvidia's 4080 gpu which truly transforms what you thought was possible with gaming immersivness. You can absolutely run anything you throw at it with ease. Thanks to nvidias coveted DLSS your games will run impressive
frame rates virtually doubling (tripling in some cases) without sacrificing pixel quality.
I've seen some people complaining about screen quality, specifically backlight bleeding, and edge obscurity. However, I've not ran into any into any issues regarding picture quality. Though just be mindful when choosing to purchase new, as is always the case. Now noise on the other hand, yes you can expect a noisy device but it's not uncommon when you consider the power trade off. Fans do get loud at times but using a headset or higher volume levels should negate most of it.
This is without a doubt the best laptop I've ever owned and I couldn't happier. If you're talking in terms of value. The ROG Strix is exceptionally a good buy. Asus has had it's hiccups but, the hit a homerun this time.

Poor thermal performance

Bought this laptop for its bells and whistles (RTX4080 and i9 chip). When came to gaming, instantly went up to 95C on CPU with all LOW settings on helldivers 2. Returning this laptop. I have this laptop for about over a week and realized that every time I gamed (this is a GAMING Laptop) it would heat the CPU up to 95C and causing the PC to auto shut down.
I tried everything, I tried running on low settings still same, under watting the CPU still same, increasing the fan % STILL SAME. It’s ridiculous that I can’t game on a GAMING laptop.

Dear JerryK,
Thank you for your comment.
We do understand your concern about thermal issues. It is normal that excessive heat is generated while under heavy load especially during gaming, WINDOWS Update and antivirus scan. When system resource utilization is high, this will generate more heat than normal and tends to trigger the fan to spin at full-throttle. Please ensure the air ventilations are free from obstructions in order to have an efficient air flow for better heat dissipation. While gaming, please ensure no resource hungry applications are running in the background, this will definitely spike the temperature. The heat or temperature does decreases or normalizes once system resource utilization goes down. You may also try tweaking the performance mode inside the Armoury Crate application. Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

I was able to get this laptop for 2099.99 which is honestly a steal, especially when looking at the 4080 GPU category, because most other laptops in this realm are nearly 1k more, I went after a laptop with a bigger screen that could replace my desktop, and this does a great job at it. The processor is faster than my 12700k and keeps up as well as my 3070ti. I haven't had any of the issues other people have complained about, I have minimal backlight bleed, I don't have coil whine, and the laptop stays relatively cool while gaming for long sessions. Granted I do use a laptop cooler with the laptop, and I would suggest others do the same. The one upgrade I would suggest when getting the computer is adding at least another 16gb of ram. While 16gb may do for some, armoury crate does take up a descent amount of ram to run, and that doesn't include if you have any other programs running. Currently while typing this I have 7 programs running along with armoury crate and the laptop is sitting at 32% usage on the ram with 32gb, on 16gb that's 10.24gb it would already be using. I'm glad they have a secondary nvme drive you can add too, currently I have 2 1tb drives in the laptop which is enough for me. The battery life is terrible, Ill be frank, but honestly, I don't really care. You don't buy a computer this powerful and expect 11 hours of battery. if you want good battery life, buy a mac. Take a chance on this laptop, Asus makes a quality product. Fours days after buying this laptop I bought another Asus Strix laptop with a 4060 and a r9 7845hx for my wife and she loves hers too, it's more powerful than the desktop she had and its mobile. I would buy this again especially over an alienware, The only other brand I would consider apart from asus is MSI.

Best Gaming "Easy to Upgrade" Laptop Ever!!!

Great Laptop! specially if you get it on sale. I gave it 3 months of use before writing this review. I got this Asus laptop on sale from $2399.99 to $2099.00! it's very easy to make upgrades on this gaming laptop! It's also very fast and quiet! Reading the reviews and questions asked it states on Asus website that the ram is only up-gradable to 32GB (4800dim). But I read on some reviews and questions that after the BIOS update its up gradable up to 64gb (4800 dim) RAM which I did (a bit overkill too tbh lol). I also added a 4TB SSD WD Gen4 NVME and also upgraded it's wifi and bluetooth card & I couldn't be happier.
From an MSI loyal customer I became an instant ASUS fan with this laptop. I also love the screen 240hz & 18inches and 4080 GPU. So Buy this right away specially if you see it on sale!!!
I spent a good 1 month of reading reviews and comparing prices online and this is the best gaming laptop for it's price! with a 240hz 18 inch screen and a 4080gpu (with 175 max tgp) for it's price this is really great. and those 2 components (screen and gpu) are not up gradable when it comes to laptops.
With all the upgrades I did with this laptop, my laptop now is probably priced at $3000-$3200.
It could get a little hot BUT with a 4080gpu with a max tgp of 175watts that is kinda expected. What I did is buy fans with 8000rpm and put them underneath and it lowered the temps from 75C (which isn't really bad) down to 65Celcius.
Bestbuy was really awesome too to have it delivered in 2 days to me. I guess they're trying to compete with Amazon now. lol although I wish they put bubble wraps or some kind of padding and not just double boxed it for the sake of double boxing it. Good thing Asus put a lot of protection with the way they pack their laptops.

Impressive Performance with RTX 4080

I recently purchased the ASUS ROG Strix 18" Gaming Laptop, and I must say, it's an impressive machine. The laptop's QHD display with a 240Hz refresh rate is a game-changer for hardcore gamers like myself. The visuals are stunningly crisp and the high refresh rate ensures buttery smooth gameplay, making it perfect for fast-paced games.
Under the hood, the 13th Gen Intel Core i9 processor coupled with 16GB Memory provides remarkable speed and efficiency. Whether it's for gaming or multitasking, this laptop handles it all without a hitch. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card is another standout feature, delivering top-notch graphics performance. Gaming on this laptop feels immersive, thanks to these powerful components.
Storage-wise, the 1TB SSD is more than sufficient for my extensive game library and ensures quick load times. The laptop also boasts a robust build quality and a design that screams 'gaming.'
However, there are a couple of reasons why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. First, the laptop is quite bulky, which affects its portability. It's more of a desktop replacement than a travel-friendly device. Secondly, the battery life isn't great. It's understandable given the powerful specs, but it means you're mostly tethered to a power outlet.
In conclusion, the ASUS ROG Strix 18" is a powerhouse gaming laptop with a few minor drawbacks. If you're looking for top-tier gaming performance and don't mind the bulkiness and average battery life, this laptop is definitely worth considering.

After about a month in I haven't had any issues. Super snappy and no crashes. Every game I've played has been running at max settings and 200+ FPS (although I have been playing older games like Titanfall 2, Outer Wilds, Master Chief Collection). This is my first PC gaming experience and it's essentially deleted the PS5 from my life outside of exclusives.
I did abandon Armory Crate pretty quickly and installed Ghelper from github, which is designed exclusively as an Armory Crate replacement for these laptops, as well as a couple of other Asus models. It's functioned exactly the same and the laptop actually has been performing marginally better since the switch. Would recommend some research and strong consideration into the switch.
The screen has been fantastic outside of the IPS glow, which I guess is to be expected - although, I am pretty ignorant to PC screens as I have been gaming exclusively PS5 on an OLED.
I can't give much opinion on the keyboard or trackpad as I don't really use them, however they seem fine to me. Fan noise is negligible outside of gaming, and during gaming it's really not bad at all (I don't have sensitive ears though). Also, battery life is garbage compared to laptops that are designed for productivity and portability. However, I doubt that's why you're here. I am using this laptop as a desktop replacement, and in that environment battery life is a non-factor.
I/O is good enough I'd say. I have filled the USB ports pretty quickly a couple of times and with the lack of a dock in my setup, I found that a little annoying. However, I wasn't expecting desktop levels of interface.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with this purchase. I would definitely make it again. Also, I don't feel I'm missing out on the 4090 version at all. This model is great bang for buck while on sale. One caveat - your mileage may very if you are upgrading from something that is only a few years old. I am coming from something I'd consider very old at this point (2016 HP Envy), and it's been a night and day upgrade experience. This thing is an absolute powerhouse and I would be impressed if you found otherwise.

Okay. As with any review I will tell my experience. I came into the market looking for a gaming laptop because gaming on my pc was just not an option anymore due to me having a baby and the sheer noise/light would keep her awake during gaming hours.
I started with an asus rog zephyrus laptop 15.6 inch screen 3060 graphics. Loved it. But I felt a void as the screen was too small and since i gamed on the laptop exclusively I wanted more size and maybe a bit more performance, was not sure what I wanted? I exchanged it for the alienware m17 r5, I brought that puppy home and instantly thought it was trash. Gamers and PC goers can almost instantly tell when they approve or disapprove, and the alienware was instant for me. Bottle necked, seriously and honestly performed worse than 3060 asus I had prior even though it had a 3070ti, also it was 1080p so when I compared to my prior 1440p I should have had obvious performance boost... nope!
I was super upset and angry. I bought this bad boy and instantly was thinking... THIS IS END GAME FOR ME. 18 inch beauty. Screen brightness great and 1600p is crisp like a piece of fresh toast. 4080 runs like a super champ, I like high specs and high fps. the 240hz screen at 1600p that runs a lot of games (i play esports titles) so smooth and nice looking.
Does it have slight ips burn? Sure.... do I play games that are all black... nah i dont even notice it... maybe on loading screens and doesnt bother me.
I feel all the negative reviews just somehow got lemons or don't understand what a good gaming laptop is.
THIS LAPTOP IS GREAT... Coming from someone who has been in the gaming PC hype before it was a hype and has gone through 4 gaming laptops to find the one (this one).
If you can afford it, get it. If you cant then size down and get the smaller screen.
My 2 cents.

I have had it for almost 2 weeks, and I really like it. The material is hard plastic and it is actually really thin (compared to my gl502vs).
The graphics are just amazing, everything runs super fast. It does not have any problems with the temperature (average 55deg C, playing games and running a bunch of other programs at the same time).
A few tips:
-Memory
It comes with two 8gb rams (16gb total), you can change them for DDR5 4800MHz (I did read the max is 32gb total), both slots are available to change rams, there is not soldered ram in this unit.
- Drives
it comes with one extra slot only for M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD's.
- Graphics
It comes with the nvidia gtx4080, but it also has an integrated graphic card, so the laptop switches between both for the different applications. You would want to probably change it and only let it use the nvidia card (nvidia settings).
- Firmware
There is a firmware (5/23/22), that messed up the laptop. I had to call asus support, and they gave me directions about "How to fix Black Screen after BIOS update". I would just suggest people to disable automatic firmware updates on windows.
- Coil whine
It has coil whine, but mine practically does not have much. I barely hear it for a couple of seconds, actually the fans make more noise.
- Backlight Bleed
Deal breaker for some people, I do not really care much. It is not that terrible
- OS
it comes with windows 11 and I hate it. This is not a laptop's issue, but the OS is super slow compared to windows 10. It does not boot faster than my old laptop because of this OS, I might change it later.
I definetely recommend this laptop, it is worth the price,

This is by far the fastest machine I have ever had. There is nothing it can't run at max settings so far and it makes an excellent productivity, video editing, and coding machine as well. A lot more portable than you might think as well. The screen size makes it feel like you are sitting at your desktop machine on a large monitor. Excellent keyboard, touchpad, the 10 key numpad is great as well. No quality control issues at all with my unit. I would not expect much more than 4-5 hrs of battery life, but I don't really forsee a lot of time you'd be away from an output with a unit this large. I upgraded from a Asus M16 and have zero regrets. I much prefer the larger screen and the cooling solution on this is awesome. I game a lot on my lap with zero issues burning my legs, which I couldn't say about the M16 (2022). I don't think I would wish for anything else, except an IR camera so that windows hello was supported. I even prefer the plastic keyboard deck over metal coated softtouch. It feels as good as metal, if not cooler, and I never have to worry about it rubbing off or peeling. If you find the charger too large, be away that the machine will run everything but heavy gaming on just a 100w USB c charger and with just a tiny usb c cable it is really no issue to plug it in whenever you sit down.
Very bright and colorful screen as well. Motion is awesome on the 240hz and I have no coil whine. It is at least as fast as my 3070TI M16 was. Easy to upgrade the ram and run 2 NVME SSDs as well. A real masterpiece.

This laptop has been great to me for what it can do. The people who have said gaming on this is amazing do not lie. The screen is immersive with its 6:10 inch panel. Crisp resolution and even on 1440p is great. And then 240hz is a game changer of a laptop. Especially coming from 144hz laptop screen. The laptop stays cool even through long and heavy sessions which amazes me. The only cons for me are the backlight bleed but its only present on the bottom left of my screen which isnt that serious of an issue. Coil whine but only noticable on silent mode and when the room your in is deadly slient. And i dont think enough people have talked about this, but that little hinge part where the camera is where its suppose to help opening and closing the laptop, That part starts to slowly become more loose and loose and start to hear creeking. Im not sure if this was just the laptop i got but yeah, so i just want people to be aware of that and be gentle with that part as it may be an issue the more you use it and arent careful with it. And also i just dont know if thatll be a cause for a concern down the line. But other than that yeah, no disappointments here so far. I love this thing plain and simple

Great laptop.,. In terms of price to performance, nothing comes close. Build quality is great even though most of the build is plastic. Thermals are pretty good and haven't really seen any throttling yet. Fans get loud however what would you expect from a top tier gaming laptop? Port selection is nice and allows for multiple peripherals to be connected. If there was anything to gripe about, it would be the keyboard layout, which feels a bit crammed with the number pad... I think it would've made sense to leave it out keep the same layout which is on the Strix G16. My favorite thing is definitely the panel on here. It comes with a 2k+ resolution due to the 16:10 allergy ratio along with a truly buttery smooth 240fps... In terms of brightness, this things definitely the brightest non-oled and non-mini-led panel i have seen on a laptop, making it a real joy to look at. There is minimal back light bleed and i can hardly tell there is when gaming. Overall, i would highly recommend this laptop to anyone that is looking for a budget 4080 laptop. Best thing is it outperforms all of the 4080 laptop competition with exception to the MSI Titan, you can't go wrong with the G18!

This laptop is a powerhouse, fueled by a stellar combo of an Intel 13th gen Core i9 processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics, turns gaming into an amazing experience with all that Ray Tracing goodness. The 240 hz high-refresh-rate display gives silky-smooth gameplay, and the RGB keyboard adds a touch of personal flair. The cooling system is pretty good as well keeps things chill during long sessions, and the sturdy build guarantees durability. Connectivity options are spot-on, and the overall design is a gamer's dream. I would highly recommend it.
Pros: Great CPU and GPU performance in modern AAA titles. Runs cool and the deck does not get hot at all. Speakers are good as well.
Cons: Only comes with 16 (8x8) DDR5 RAM but can be upgraded to 32GB with ease. 1tb nvme Gen 4 is not enough to current-gen games but there is an extra M. 2 slot. The screen is overall great with accurate colors but there is some backlight bleed in darker scenes which is not all that noticeable, also differs from model to model.
