    Reboot loops

    |

Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Upon powering on the PC, it goes into a reboot loop (1 sec ON / 1 sec OFF). The diagnostic LEDs that are on the right side of the mobo never light up (this could be a clue for someone, but to me it isn't clear). The reboot loop ONLY happens once the EATX12V cable is plugged in to the PSU - this is to say when it is properly powered to do what it's supposed to. I've swapped power supplies and other configurations. I've even pulled the motherboard out of the case, and only had CPU, RAM, and essential cables, and reboot loop remains. I'm not sure if this is a motherboard or PSU issue, but I certainly have concerns. This may be defective.

If you are merely gaming and have no interest in overclocking you can find a cheaper board. If you are planning to game and OC I recommend investing more into either the Maximus XI line or going for a Gigabyte Z390 that is much better equipped at comparable prices. Unless you really like the looks of this board skip it.

    Two defective motherboards

Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My initial motherboard I received was DOA. The diagnostic lights would not light up at all. I thought maybe it was a defective power supply, so I bought a new power supply. Didn't help. I exchanged the motherboard for another one. The 2nd one had a dead ethernet port. I didn't want to return the 2nd one, so I bought another pcie ethernet card to add on. The 2nd motherboard worked for 3 days. After the asus software prompted me to update the sonic audio drivers, the motherboard never came back up - dead diagnostic lights again. I then returned the 2nd motherboard and bought an MSI z390 gaming plus motherboard. It was a lot cheaper, and boots up a LOT faster. The only downside is that I have no bluetooth or wifi...but I don't need either. Also, before I returned the first motherboard, I noticed that the LED board where the motherboard lights up was not attached to anything. It was dangling slightly out of the encasement. I don't know if the motherboard was a previous return, or if ASUS QA has just gone downhill. I asked the person at Best buy if they received a lot of returns for this motherboard, and he said no. Maybe I am just extremely unlucky.

Super tight screws for M.2 heatsinks

The screws retaining the hardware for the small fan and the heatsinks for the M.2 sockets on my brand new ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E are so tight they damaged my screwdriver for that size screw and the two screws I attempted to take off. After researching it appears that this is common issue with this motherboard and other ASUS motherboards. I am a first time buyer of ASUS and will not recommend nor buy from ASUS again. Very disappointed a premium priced product such as the z390 has such simple issues to where it compromises the whole motherboard.

First major issues with the 3.5mm audio jack and now the RJ45 port goes bad, all within a month. This motherboard was replacing another ASUS board that also had a failed RJ45 port, though that one lasted almost a year. I thought it was a fluke, I guess not. It's a shame, the board has a great overall design and feature set, it's just lacking in reliability.

Could perform better for the price

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Before reading, please note I was shopping for a motherboard for an i9 9900K, so for lower end CPUs I can imagine this motherboard being a good option if you were wanting great aesthetics, okay performance and a smart AI overclocking system. The cooling on this motherboard, to be quite honest with you, was down there with entry level motherboards, like the $175 Prime Z390-A I had before trying this one. I ended up replacing this motherboard with a Gigabyte Aorus Master for only $30 more than the Z390-E gaming motherboard and saw hugely improved cooling performance with almost similar quality in UEFI interface and AI overclocking. Asus even offers the Maximus XI Hero motherboard for the same price as the Aorus Master with slightly lower cooling performance. I am not marking this motherboard down just because it did not work with my i9 9900k; it's because it is not well priced. For $250 you get the same performance as you would in $150ish motherboards. $280 gets you a flagship-performance motherboard like the Master or even the Asrock Taichi Ultimate. Other than performance, it's still a beautiful motherboard with a smart overclocking AI at least for lower performance CPUs, so I will at least give credit to this.
